Notes: Summary Lectin-binding sites of the human pituitary adenoma cells were examined by electron microscopy in correlation with their functional states. In this study used were 37 cases of the human pituitary adenomas which had been operated in our clinics from 1977 to 1979. They were divided into four groups: 13 cases of PRL-producing adenomas, nine of hGH-producing adenomas, three of ACTH-producing adenomas, and 12 of hormonal non-functioning adenomas. In parallel with the detection of the lectinbinding sites by means of the ferritin-labeling method, the basal levels of their secreting hormones were determined by the radioimmunoassay technique, and their producing hormones were characterized light microscopically by the immunocytochemical HRP-labeling technique. The present study clearly shows that the ferritinlabeled, lectin-binding sites of the human pituitary adenoma cells prefixed with aldehyde are different in number between PRL- or hGH-producing adenoma cells and non-functioning ones. Morphologically resemblin, non-functioning adenoma cells and mixed somatotrophic and lactotrophic adenoma cells are definitely distinguished from each other by the findings of the ferritin-labeled RCA-binding sites' distribution pattern. Lectins have been proved very useful to evaluate the membrane characteristics of the human pituitary adenoma cells in association with their functional states.

Notes: Abstract Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is a disease usually observed in children in which the larvae of animal parasites invade and reside in human tissues for long periods. Although the common causal species of VLM are Toxocara canis and T. cati, we identified three adult patients with VLM, probably due to Ascaris suum, whose diagnosis was made by specific immunoserological tests. The patients complained of respiratory symptoms, and laboratory tests showed pronounced eosinophilia, but neither larvae nor eggs were detected in stool samples. We present the findings of various imaging studies of the patients. Multiple small hypoechoic mass lesions were demonstrated by ultrasound tomography, which disappeared after anti-helminthic therapy. Hepatic mass lesions were detected as low-density areas on computed tomography, as high signal intensities on T2-weighted magnetic resonance images, as space-occupying regions in liver scintigraphy, and as yellow-white nodules in laparoscopy. Although biopsied liver tissue specimens showed marked infiltrations of eosinophiles in the portal tracts and hepatic sinusoids, neither larvae nor eggs could be identified.

Notes: Summary Intracellular lectin (Con A)-binding sites of human pituitary adenoma were examined by electron microscopy using the horseradish-peroxidase (HRP)-labelling technique. In this study were used 16 cases of human pituitary adenomas operated on in our clinics between 1977 and 1981: they concluded 4 each of PRL-, GH-, ACTH-producing and hormonal non-functioning adenomas. In parallel with the detection of lectin-binding sites, basal levels of their secreting hormones were determined by the radioimmunoassay technique, and their producing hormones were characterized light microscopically by the immunocytochemical HRP-labelling technique. In the present study, for hormonal functioning adenoma cells, mature or large granules of each specific type of adenoma cells had no definite Con A-binding sites. On the other hand, immature or small secretory granules of RPL- or GH-producing adenoma cells showed a positive reaction with Con A. ACTH-producing adenomas so far examined revealed no definite binding sites. Some variable results were obtained concerning non-functioning adenomas. Lectins have been and will be very useful in the detection of different subtypes of adenomas in each specific group.

Notes: Summary Electron-immunocytochemical staining with lectin (concanavalin A: Con A) binding sites analysis was applied to study secretory granules of human pituitary adenomas and surrounding normal pituitary tissue using post-embedded serial ultrathin sections. Twelve cases of human pituitary adenoma and three specimens of normal pituitary tissue surrounding adenomas were studied: the cases were operated on between 1982 and 1984. The tumors consisted of four prolactin (PRL)-, six growth hormone (GH)-, and two adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-producing adenomas. In parallel with the detection of Con A binding sites of secretory granules, their secreting hormones were characterized electron-microscopically with the immunocytochemical horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeling using the avidin-biotin technique. The two cases of ACTH-producing adenomas showed either weak or negative reactions with Con A on secretory granules, while normal ACTH-producing pituitary cells showed strong reactions with Con A on every secretory granule observed. Large secretory granules of PRL- or GH-producing cells showed negative reactions with Con A both in the pituitary adenoma and normal pituitary, while some small granulated or sparsely granulated adenoma cells also showed strong reactions with Con A. The complexity of human pituitary adenomas is illustrated as well as the difference in biochemical structure of normal pituitary cells and pituitary adenoma cells secreting the same specific hormone.

Notes: Abstract A distinctive chlorophyll maximum was detected around 60-m depth in the western North Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea, and almost 55% of the total chlorophyll in the entire water column was found within 50 m around the subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) layer. More than 70% of the chlorophyll was contained in picoplankton which passed through a 3-μm Nuclepore but retained on 0.22-μm Millipore filters at the SCM as well as the surface layers. By transmission electron microscopic observations, the picoplankton were identified as aChlorella-like coccoid green alga having a section size of 1.2 to 1.5 μm and cyanobacteria of 0.5 to 2 μm. No obvious difference in these two dominant groups was observed in the SCM and the surface samples except in numerous and heavily stacked thylakoids in the former samples.

Notes: Abstract There is as yet no consensus about the need for treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections, except for H. pylori-associated peptic ulcer. We present a 3-year-old boy with a 3-month history of oedema and hypoproteinaemia associated with hypertrophic gastropathy. Abdominal scintigram using intravenous 99mTc-labelled human serum albumin scintigraphy and direct measurement of protein in gastric juice proved that serum proteins were massively secreted in the stomach. Histological findings of mucosal inflammation were observed and H. pylori was isolated from the gastric mucosa. The protein loss promptly stopped within 2 weeks of the beginning of eradication therapy. Conclusion Protein-losing hypertrophic gastropathy may be induced by Helicobacterpylori-associated gastritis and should therefore be carefully evaluated by histological and bacteriological examination to provide a basis for eradication of H. pylori.

Notes: Fast homoepitaxial growth of 4H-SiC has been carried out on off-axis (0001) substrates byhorizontal hot-wall CVD at 1600οC. High growth rate up to 24 μm/h has been achieved withmirror-like surface in the C/Si ratio range of 1.0-2.0. The Z1/2 and EH6/7 concentrations can be kept aslow as 7 × 1011 cm-3 and 3 × 1011 cm-3, although an unknown trap (UT1) is observed with theconcentration in the 1011 cm-3 range. The photoluminescence spectra are dominated by strong freeexciton peaks, and the L1 peak is not observed. The basal-plane dislocation (BPD) density hasdecreased with increase in growth rate, and it can be reduced to 22 cm-2 when epilayers are grown onChemical Mechanically Polished (CMP) substrates at a growth rate of 24 μm/h

Notes: Homoepitaxial growth of 4H-SiC and characterization of deep levels obtained mainly inthe authors’ group have been reviewed. The growth rate has been increased to 24 om/h with keepingvery good surface morphology and low trap concentration on 8o off-axis 4H-SiC(0001) by hot-wallchemical vapor deposition at 1650oC. The increased growth rate has resulted in the enhancedconversion of basal-plane dislocations into threading edge dislocations in epilayers. The Z1/2 andEH6/7 concentrations can be decreased to about 1·1012 cm-3 by increasing the C/Si ratio during CVD.Extensive investigation on as-grown and electron-irradiated epilayers indicates that both the Z1/2 andEH6/7 centers may be attributed to the same origin related to carbon displacement, probably a carbonvacancy. Deep levels observed in as-grown and irradiated p-type 4H-SiC are also presented

Notes: The rheological and proton pulsed NMR properties of cream cheese made from the green curds frozen and thawed were measured to determine the quantitative relationship between the freezing and thawing rates of the curds and the textural changes of the cream cheese. The hardness of the cream cheese decreased significantly as the thawing rate of the curds decreased, whereas the freezing injury was the minor source of the damage on the hardness. The bound but not free water in the cheese characterized these textural changes.

Notes: The static electrical conductivity measurements on frozen foods such as citrus juice and varieties of cheese showed that both conductivity and unfrozen water content in food products varied directly with temperature. In describing the log σ vs 1/T curve, where σ is the conductivity and T is the absolute temperature, it was found that the linear portion of the curves at low temperature was related to bound water content which was independent of temperature, whereas the non-linear portion in the temperature range between the freezing point and 10 or 35 degrees below the freezing point was related to the unfrozen free water content which was dependent on temperature.
