Notes: Aim : To document the clinical, histological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features of three malignant melanomas showing neuroendocrine differentiation. Methods and results : Three patients, two with primary cutaneous melanoma and one with nasal mucosal melanoma, subsequently developing or simultaneously presenting with metastatic malignant melanoma, were studied by conventional histological technique, immunohistochemistry of formalin-fixed paraffin-wax embedded tissues, and electron microscopy of epoxy-resin-embedded tumour tissue. Tumours showed either small cell or conventional malignant melanoma cell morphology. One of the three primary melanocytic lesions (the nasal melanoma) exhibited neuroendocrine differentiation immunohistochemically. All three metastatic malignant melanomas showed, in varying combinations, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural evidence for neuroendocrine differentiation: they were positive for the melanocytic markers, S100 protein, HMB-45, Melan-A and tyrosinase, and the neuroendocrine markers chromogranin, synaptophysin and neurofilament protein. Ultrastructural study in two of the metastases revealed neuroendocrine granules but no lattice-bearing melanosomes. Conclusions : The cases described are the most comprehensively investigated malignant melanomas showing neuroendocrine differentiation to date, and the first to document neuroendocrine differentiation ultrastructurally in these tumours. Malignant melanoma with neuroendocrine differentiation therefore needs to be recognized among the other, better known variants of malignant melanoma.

Notes: Calli were isolated from root, stem and leaf segments of Nigella sativa (Fam. Ranunculaceae) on White's medium containing napthaleneacetic acid and coconut milk. From all the three types of calli, roots were differentiated. Shoot development occurred in stem and leaf calli only after the omission of first coconut milk and then of auxin from the basal medium and also in IAA (2.0 mg/ml) and coconut milk (15 % v/v) in the medium. Frequency of organ formation and the maintenance of this capacity depend upon the nature as well as the age of the callus tissue.

Notes: Embryogenesis could be induced within a short period in differentiated roots of Nigella sativa on solid Murashige and Skoog's medium containing casein hydrolysate (500 mg/1) and IAA (0.5 mg/1). Experimental root explants were taken from two different stocks: (i) previously differentiated from leaf callus and now being maintained through subcultures in liquid White's medium and (ii) freshly differentiated from leaf callus on solid Murashige and Skoog's medium + casein hydrolysate (100 mg/1) + IAA (0.5 mg/1). Fifty per cent of the embryoids produced 2n plantlets within 40–60 days.

Notes: Summary In suspension culture 91% free cells ofNigella sativa was obtained inWhite's medium supplemented with casein hydrolysate, inositol and adenine. Ploidy distribution pattern was similar in cell clumps of different sizes and free cells. Chromosomal irregularities were more in free cells. A number of globular embryoid were formed when casein hydrolysate, inositol and adenine were added in the medium after subsequent omission of auxin and coconut milk.

Notes: Summary Exudates and extractives of roots ofRuellia tuberosa, containing 2,6-dimethoxyquinone, acacetin and a C16-quinone, have been shown to produce significant protective and curative actions againstFusarium oxysporum-incited wilt of safflower. The potentiality of the root extractives as a foliar fungicide is appraised.

Notes: [Auszug] BANERJEE REPLIES-There was one major point that we had wanted to make in our original communication1. Before, and even since the publication of our note, there have been no lunar palaeointensity experiments in which, first, a direct, thermal method had been used on three sub-samples from one rock ...

Notes: Abstract We present a study of the inclusive production ofK *(892) and ∑t+-(1385)+cc at 3.6 GeV/c from $$\bar p$$ p interactions. The sensitivity of the exposure is 35.4 events/μb. Longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are presented. The indirect production ofK s 0 from parentK * and that of Λ's from parent Σ(1385) are studied. The shape of thex distribution of Λ's for $$p\xrightarrow{{\bar p}}\Lambda $$ are calculated from $$p\xrightarrow{p}\Lambda $$ and $$p\xrightarrow{{\pi ^ - }}\Lambda $$ and compared with the experimental distributions. The difference of antiparticle production cross-section ofK s 0 in the central region is compared with the expectation from Mueller-Regge formalism.

Notes: Abstract The average directions of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of three texturally distinct layers (72215, 72255, and 72275) of a 2 m-sized breccia boulder were found to be the same, while the directions of their stable components of NRM were found to be widely divergent. One clast from 72275 yielded a stable NRM direction which was different from that of the matrix. Approximate paleointensity measurements showed that 72255 and 72275 could have obtained their stable remanence from an ancient magnetic field of the same magnitude. However, 72215 probably was magnetized by a magnetic field of a different intensity. We concluded that the coincident NRM directions owe their origin to a secondary imprint of less stable magnetization imparted during the assembly of the boulder at moderate temperatures (∼ 450°C) on the South Massif. The stable directions, on the other hand, date from the last, higher-temperature (∼ 770°C) magnetizing event experienced by the mineral and lithic components while they were part of the immature pre-Serenitatis regolith.

Notes: Abstract The room temperature tensile properites of a Zr-1.9 wt % Cr alloy have been examined in the beta quenched as well as in tempered conditions and the results have been rationalized in terms of possible hardening mechanisms. The appearance of the fracture surfaces has been correlated to the microstructures developed in the alloy after various heat-treatments.
