Notes: Growth and differentiation of the imperfect fungus Geotrichum candidum were followed in submerged cultures containing a simple synthetic glucose salt medium. Uptake of glucose, ammonium and oxygen from the medium were measured during the entire growth perod. In 0.1% glucose the fungus grows with one exponential growth phase until all the glucose has been consumed. The arthrospores are formed in the stationary phase. In 0.5% glucose the growth curve has two exponential growth phases, one with a doubling time of 1.8 h and a second one with a doubling time of 4.9 h. The second exponential growth phase, which starts when less than 15% of the glucose and less than 30% of the ammonium have been consumed, is shown to be the sporulation phase. During this growth phase the oxygen saturation in the culture remained constant at about 50%.

Notes: In submerged culture the mycelium of Geotrichum candidum breaks into fragments (arthrospores) which are either cylindrical or ellipsoidal in shape; the proportion of each spore type depends upon the glucose concentration in the medium. Above 0.2% glucose the ellipsoidal type prevails, whereas the cylindrical type is more abundant at lower glucose concentrations. The cylindrical spores and the mycelium have a very similar macromolecular composition, but the ellipsoidal spores have less RNA and protein and more carbohydrate than the mycelium.

Notes: Two single-crystal energy-dispersive crystallographic methods (the fixed-crystal method and the rotating-crystal method) are described and investigated. Formulae for integrated intensities are derived for mosaic and perfect single crystals. Experimental results and a comparison between measured and calculated integrated intensities for a perfect germanium crystal are given. Special features and possible applications of the methods are discussed.

Notes: The special features of X-ray energy-dispersive powder and single-crystal diffraction using synchrotron radiation are discussed on the basis of experiments performed at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, DESY. The method is shown to be of particular value for fast structure identifications, experiments for which large scattering vectors are important, studies of phase transformations and chemical reactions at elevated temperatures and high-pressure studies. Studies of time-dependent phenomena using pulsed external fields are discussed.

Notes: Test experiments were made using the X-ray energy-dispersive method at the storage ring DORIS (Hamburg) working in the single-bunch mode. It is shown that the spectral distribution of the incident beam calculated from the storage-ring parameters is in very good agreement with that derived from measured diffraction patterns of known substances, and thus it can be used for structural studies. This is illustrated with results of profile-fitting refinement applied to urea (CH4N2O) and naphthalene (C10H8). It is also shown that because of an improved detector system and the time structure of the radiation emitted from the storage ring one is able to record 7 × 104 photons per second and obtain reliable patterns in times of the order of 1 s.

Notes: The resolution problem in X-ray energy-dispersive diffractometry is discussed. It is shown that for a given characteristic of the solid-state detector system and a given range of interplanar spacings, an optimum scattering angle can be easily found for any divergence of the incident and scattered beams.

Notes: The Debye-Waller factor for powdered magnesium was measured in the temperature range 293 to 700 K by the energy-dispersive X-ray method. The results are compared with published theoretical calculations based on the quasi-harmonic and the anharmonic approximations. Anisotropy was found in the behaviour of the temperature factor B(T), with excellent agreement in the a axis direction between the experimental and theoretical calculations within the quasi-harmonic approximation. In the c axis direction, however, the experimental values at increasing temperature exceed the theoretical values, even in the anharmonic approximation.

Notes: Polarization measurements of the primary X-ray beam produced by thick copper and tungsten anodes are reported and formulas derived for integrated intensities of Bragg reflections in energy-dispersive diffractometry with the polarization of the primary beam taken into account. It was found that for an angle of 45° between the scattering plane and the plane containing the electron beam and the primary beam, the influence of polarization vanishes, while it increases as the angle changes from 45° to either 0 or 90°. For the latter values, the influence of polarization is considerable at high photon energies and at scattering angles close to 90°.

Notes: Abstract The apparent Dingle temperature of the 3rd zone needles in several alloys of Zn−Mn, Zn−Cr and Zn−Fe has been determined from the absolute amplitude of the de Haas-van Alphen effect over the temperature range 1.6 K to 4.2 K and the field range 0 to 9 kG. The results show clearly that potential scatteringnot spin scattering dominates in all three systems. In addition, a “cross-over” behaviour in the de Haas-van Alphen amplitudes results from the scattering of the magnetic moments of the impurity spin.

Notes: Summary The association between unemployment and cause of death (‘natural’ or ‘violent’) was investigated in a retrospective study of members of the bricklayers' and carpenters/cabinet-makers' trade unions in Denmark during the period 1. 1. 1971 to 31. 12. 1975. The bricklayers suffered more unemployment than the carpenters/cabinet-makers but for both unions as a whole it was found that there were significantly more unemployment periods in the group of violent deaths compared with natural deaths, whereas there was no difference in the frequency of unemployment between suicidal and accidental deaths.
