Notes: Abstract Isoxicam is a potent, orally active, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with prolonged activity in experimentally induced inflammation in rats. Isoxicam is less ulcerogenic, acutely less toxic and, therefore, appears to have a therapeutic ratio superior to other standard agents to which it was compared.

Notes: It has been shown previously that a human cancer cell line (HeLa TCRC-1) which produces only the Regan isoenzymes of alkaline phosphatase in culture, elaborates a different isoenzyme form when grown in an animal host. This alteration of isoenzyme expression results in the production of an isoenzyme form referred to as oncoamniotic (FL), since it shares many of the characteristics of the enzyme form produced by the FL amnion cell line. Here we shall report on the alteration of isoenzyme expression in a non-Regan producing cell line heterotransplanted into an immunosuppressed animal host. HeLa TCRC-2 is a cell line cloned for the exclusive production of an isoenzyme form which is most similar to adult bone type alkaline phosphatase. This cell line growing in an animal host produces an additional isoenzyme form which appears to be similar to the amniotic (FL) type. The original non-Regan alkaline phosphatase of this cell line persists, and is co-expressed during in vivo growth. When HeLa TCRC-2 is removed from the animal and placed back into culture, the exclusive production of the adult bone type alkaline phosphatase is restored. The present report indicates the dramatic alterations in gene expression observed when well characterized cultured cells are heterotransplanted into immunosuppressed animals.

Notes: Summary A case of a 5 1/2 years old boy with a plexiform ameloblastoma of the jaw is reported. 6 years after resection of the primary tumor metastases developed in a lymph node at the left side of the neck and in both lungs. Thoracotomy revealed many small metastases spread all over the lungs. Light and electron microscopical studies of the primary tumor showed a typical plexiform ameloblastoma without signs of malignancy. In the metastases, however, these studies revealed the histological criteria of a malignant tumor with marked pleomorphism of tumor cells, increase of heterochromatin, enlargement of nucleoli and invagination of nuclear membranes. After enucleation of two metastases and therapy with cytostatic agents for several months no further metastases have been observed within a period of 6 years. Comparative light and electron microscopic studies of both primary tumor and metastases demonstrate that there are no histological criteria to identify the primary tumor as a malignant ameloblastoma. Ameloblastoma with distant metastases is a rare tumor in children, this case is only the third reported in the literature.

Notes: Summary Prognosis of inoperable squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (T3, N0–3) was because of low ray-sensibility mostly unfavorable. The combined therapy with methotrexate and bleomycin and nucleosides (inosine and thymidine) show new therapeutic possibilities. Since 1975 the combined therapy was used in more than 25 cases. The favorable effect was attributed to the ability of the nucleosides, thymidine and inosine, to reduce toxicity. In most of the cases we reached operability of the tumor (T1–2, N0–2), in several cases we achieved clinical and histological full remission of the tumor. The best treating-scheme of nonoperable squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue will be the combined cytostaticanucleoside-treating, the sequential complete excession of the tumor followed by radiation.

Notes: Summary A total inventory about the sociopsychological situation of german air-traffic controllers (N = 517) with data on nominal scales was analysed by cluster analysis. The results of the multivariate analysis were compared with those of univariate analysis by Singer and Rutenfranz (1972) in methodology and substance: Clusters concerning the family situation specify statements to the “typical controller”. Mean rankings of importance of variables of the work-situation are split into groups of contradictory meanings and are related to job satisfaction. Groups of controllers with good job satisfaction are separated from the dissatisfied. Negative estimations of the career are substantiated by clusters. Special problems of some airports are filtered out. The collectif of all air traffic controllers is structured according to subjective health status, symptoms of illness and therapeutics. Relations between health disturbances and job satisfaction, stress and rankings of importance of aspects of work situation are pointed out and partially explained with motivation- and job-satisfaction theories.

Notes: Summary Folic acid was estimated in blood and seminal plasma of normo- and oligospermic men. Following folic acid administration (10 mg TID for 30 days), the levels in blood and semen increased. However, sperm counts, motility and DNA content of spermatozoa were not affected.

Notes: [Auszug] To establish whether any controls at the level of gene expression have evolved in blue-green algae, it seems pertinent to look for responses to environmental stimuli which do affect the growth of these organisms. Such stimuli include CO2, sources of phosphorus and nitrogen, and, of course, light. ...

Notes: Summary The addition of nalidixic acid to growing cells of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in a transient depression in the rate of ribosomal precursor RNA production and a transient arrest of cells in G1. Protein synthesis rates were less affected. Lower concentrations of nalidixic acid also affected RNA synthesis and progression through G1 but had no effect on protein synthesis rates. We suggest that nalidixic acid has a primary effect on RNA synthesis leading to a G1 arrest.
