Notes: Summary In a sample of 1.033 diabetic patients characteristics of 10 group specific systems (ABO, MNS, Rh, P, K and Fy blood groups and Hp, Gc and Gm serum types) were tested in order to verify any association of hereditary group specific traits and diabetes. The patients were subgrouped for sex, seriousness of diabetes, age of manifestation and body type. The frequencies of the group specific traits were statistically compared with those of an appropriate control group using the χ2 test. Resulting from that investigation an increase of blood group 0 was found in diabetics below average in corpulence (basing upon the Rohrer index), and a confirmation was found for an already suspected association of diabetes and the Gm (a + x +) type.

Notes: Summary The fine structure of normal, denervated, and reinnervated muscle spindles in lower lumbrical muscles of rats was studied morphometrically at time intervals ranging from 3–14 months. In control spindles, the mean transverse area of mitochondria was estimated to be more than twice as large in nuclear chain than in typical nuclear bag fibers. Following denervation, there was a severe decrease of the mean number and transverse area of mitochondria, and a moderate, but statistically significant decrease of the mean transverse area of intrafusal muscle fibers (IMFs) despite an increase of the number of IMFs. At 12–14 months of reinnervation, changes of the transverse areas of IMFs were statistically insignificant, but the mean values for the mitochondria were incompletely restored. At 4×3 months, after fourfold repeated crush injuries to the nerve, most of the values estimated (transverse area of mitochondria; number, shape, and transverse area of IMFs and nuclei) tended to approach those in denervated rather than in reinnervated IMFs. The differences of the reactions of intra- and extrafusal muscle fibers following complete motor and sensory denervation appeared to be in accordance with their normal dimensional dissimilarities.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung An drei Kollektiven (jen=12) von männlichen Gesunden (22–43 Jahre), Patienten mit rezidivierender Calcium-Urolithiasis (21–36 Jahre), Hyperparathyreoidismus (HPT; 17–71 Jahre) wurden gleichzeitig renales zyklisches Adenosinmonophosphat (RcAMP), fraktionelle tubuläre Phosphat-Rückresorption und Serum-Parathormon während endogener Kreatininclearance gemessen.
Notes: Summary In three groups (n=12 each) of male controls (22–43 years), patients with recurring calcium urolithiasis (21–36 years) and hyperparathyroidism (HPT; 17–71 years) proven by surgery renal cyclic adenosine monophosphate (RcAMP), fractional tubular phosphate reabsorption and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) were measured during endogenous creatinine clearance. RcAMP (µMol/g creatinine) was: controls 1.48±SEM 0.27; stone formers 2.037±0.343 (not significantly different); HPT 6.234±0.454 (p〈0.001). There is no overlap between HPT and controls. Phosphate reabsorption is least in HPT (0.84±0.015), higher in controls (0.924±0.004) and stone formers (0.941±0.007). All differences are statistically significant. Under the conditions selected (moderate hydration of individuals) Serum PTH (pg-equiv/ml) is lowest in stome formers (〈100–339), higher in controls (〈100–933) and HPT (400–1150). There is no overlap in PTH between the former and the latter group but a marked one between controls and HPT. For clinical purposes the resulting diagnostic uncertainty in a given patient can be overcome by additional determinations of RcAMP and ionised serum calcium: when referring to serum PTH HPT patients fall outside, RCU patients within 2 standard deviations of either parameter in control subjects. This procedure presently appears superior to those proposed in the past (urinary cAMP etc.) but requires confirmation in larger patient populations. Moreover, since HPT prevails in middle and upper age decades, their RcAMP values and those of RCU patients should be related to a range seen in closely age- and sex-matched controls.

Notes: Abstract Cadmium uptake has been studied in starved and fed Mytilus edulis L. It is suggested that fairly elevated cadmium contents in fed mussels are not due to contaminated food, but to increased pumping rate when food is available. Highest concentration and main body burden are found in the mid-gut gland. Transport via haemolymph, and selective discrimination at the basement lamina of the mid-gut gland tubuli are regarded as mainly responsible for accumulation. Mercury seems to be processed in a similar way as cadmium. In the tubuli, both metals are immobilized in membrane-bound vesicles, which are finally defaecated.

Notes: Abstract Seventeen families with one or two children suffering from congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) were not only typed for their HLA-A,B, and D antigens but also tested biochemically forCAH heterozygosity after ACTH stimulation. The lod score analysis showed a close genetic linkage betweenCAH andHLA, indicating that theC-21-hydroxylase deficiency gene(s) causing CAH in the homozygous deficient state are-located in close proximity to theHLA complex on chromosome 6 with an estimated recombination fraction of 0 to 5%. HLA typing in 21 unrelated CAH patients revealed a statistically significant association to the HLA-B5 antigen with a relative risk value of 5.8. There was a significant correlation (P=0.0025) between theHLA segregation data and theCAH heterozygosity test results in relatives of CAH patients although a few ‘false negative’ results in theCAH heterozygosity test were observed. Thus, the combination of HLA typing and this biochemical test at present provides the most precise approach for detecting CAH carriers in families of CAH patients.

Notes: Screening for B-cell-specific antibodies in unabsorbed pregnancy sera preselected for weak reactivity in regular HLA-A, -B, and -C screening yielded a relatively high proportion (35/81) of B-cell-specific antibodies. Most B-cell-specific antibodies react broadly, showing inclusion phenomena suggesting ‘cross-reactivity’ analogous to that observed in HLA-A and -B serology. In control experiments with T-cell-enriched suspensions three antisera reacted with T cells and not with B cells. These antisera are highly associated with HLA-A2 in the unrelated population and segregate with HLA haplotypes in families and with HLA-A in a family with HLA-A, B recombination. Thus it appears that the human equivalents of la antigens may include—in analogy to the murine Ia antigens—B-cell- as well as T-cell-specific alloantigens.

Notes: The association of HLA-A and -B antigens with Bf alleles was investigated in 200 parents from 100 unrelated families. There were significant associations between HLA-A3 and Bf-F, B7 and Bf-S, B8 and Bf-S, B12 and Bf-F, and BW35 and Bf-F. Three-point HLA-A,B,Bf haplotype frequencies, linkage disequilibrium parameters, and chi-square values were determined both from the genotype and from the pheno-type data. Although the HLA-B,Bf associations involve antigens that are also present in the highly associated A,B and B,D haplotypes of the Caucasian population, there was—with the possible exception of HLA-A3,B7,Bf-S–no significant three-point association for HLA-A,B,Bf.
