Notes: The geometrical condition under which simultaneous reflexions occur with a general setting of a crystal has been formulated in three equations in terms of reciprocal-lattice vectors. A procedure is described to correct the intensity data for structure analysis for the intensity perturbation due to simultaneous reflexion. The following practical experimental conditions were taken into account: the effect due to the circumstance that the primary and secondary reflexions do not always occur exactly at the same time, the divergence and insufficient monochromatization of the incident beam, and a finite size and mosaicity of crystal specimen. The correction for simultaneous reflexion was applied to the X-ray intensity data from diformylhydrazine. It was shown that non-equal intensities among equivalent reflexions could be corrected reasonably by this method.

Notes: 1. The effects of adrenoceptor agonists on venous haemodynamics were examined, utilizing the lower half perfusion method in dogs.2. Femoral arterial pressure, central venous pressure, thoracic vena caval flow, abdominal vena caval flow, renal venous flow and femoral venous flow were measured simultaneously using electronic transducers and electromagnetic flow-meters. Hepatic volume change was monitored by the strain-gauge arch.3. Single injections of both adrenaline (1.0 μ/kg) and isoprenaline (1.0 μg/kg) intra-aortically produced an increase in venous return, adrenaline transiently and isoprenaline continuously.4. Epinephrine increased hepatic venous flow, while isoprenaline increased only abdominal vena caval flow.5. These findings suggest that effects of α-adrenoceptors are more pronounced on the hepatic vein, while on other peripheral veins, effects of β-adrenoceptors are more pronounced.

Notes: Abstract Impact fatigue tests were performed with smooth and notched specimens of low carbon steels under various impact loading conditions. The characteristic failure mechanisms in impact fatigue was discriminated by comparison with those in non-impact, ordinary fatigue. The fatigue life of smooth specimens was uniquely related to the range of plastic strain at the middle of the fatigue life in both impact and non-impact fatigue, although the characteristics of micro-structural deformation and cyclic stress-strain relationships were markedly different. The growth rate of a fatigue crack in impact fatigue of notched specimens was higher than that in non-impact fatigue when compared at the same stress intensity factor. Fractographic observations with scanning electron microscopy and the X-ray diffraction technique revealed more abundant cleavage facets and a smaller spread of the plastic zone beneath the fracture surface made by impact fatigue. Both nucleation and propagation lives in notched specimens were much shorter in impact fatigue than in non impact fatigue when compared at the same values of nominal stress and stress concentration factor.

Notes: Abstract Biaxial tension-compression fatigue tests were conducted with cruciform shaped specimens in a closed-loop servo hydraulic testing machine. The effects of static and cyclic non-singular stresses acting parallel to the crack plane on the crack growth rate are discussed based on the experimental observations of crack opening behaviour and fractography. Those non-singular stresses did affect the growth rate significantly under certain conditions. The range of crack-tip opening displacement was found to be a better parameter in correlating the growth rate than the stress intensity range or its effective range. The rate tended to increase with increasing non-singular stress which is correlated to the opening displacement range. This tendency was explained by the shift of fracture mechanisms to a more brittle type due to a higher elevation of hydrostatic stress near the crack tip for the case of a larger non-singular stress term.
