    Notes: The Raman spectra of hydrogen-bonded crystalline HCONH2 and HCOND2 have been measured up to 10 GPa at 300 K in a gasketed diamond anvil cell. The frequencies of the in-plane intermolecular stretching mode which characterizes the hydrogen bond along the zig–zag chain increase with increasing pressure with a slope (dν/dP) of 11.1 cm−1/GPa, and its slope becomes steeper, to 19.2 cm−1/GPa, at about 5.0 GPa (=Pc). The frequencies of the intramolecular ND2 stretching mode decrease with increasing pressure at all pressure range except around Pc where they show an increase of 20 cm−1. It turns out from these results that (1) the hydrogen (deuteron) bonds along the chain direction become stronger in response to the pressure, and their increasing strength are more developed above Pc, and (2) the other type of hydrogen (deuteron) bonds which bridge the chains to make their planar hydrogen-bonded network are weakened around Pc. The pressure-induced phase transition at Pc is discussed by focusing on the behavior of two types of hydrogen bondings and the effect of the interplanar interaction.

    Notes: A toroidal electrostatic analyzer with a two-dimensional position-sensitive electron detector has been developed for the measurement of differential excitation cross sections in electron-ion collisions. The electron position is resolved simultaneously in the energy and angular dispersive directions of the analyzer. The present electron analyzer is specially designed with a narrow curved entrance slit and a wide exit slit coupled with an exit lens system after the toroidal deflector, which can give a wide energy dispersed range of 20% of the mean pass energy and a large angular range extending from 30° to 120°. The performance of the spectrometer has been studied by measuring the scattered electrons from Ar atoms and from a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface, indicating the usefulness of the present analyzer in electron spectroscopy. A brief description of the method for a spectrum transformation from Cartesian coordinates to polar coordinates is also presented. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The structural and electronic transport properties of polycrystalline p-type CoSb3 with different grain sizes (about 3 and 3×102 μm) were investigated. The magnetic susceptibility was also measured. Samples were characterized by x-ray diffractometry, electron-probe microanalysis, and optical microscope observation. Samples were found to be stoichiometric and homogeneous. The Hall carrier concentration of the samples is of the order of 1018 cm−3 and weakly dependent on the temperature. The temperature dependence of the Hall mobility suggests that the predominant scattering mechanism drastically changes depending on grain size: for large grain size a combination of the neutral impurity scattering and the acoustic phonon scattering, and for small grain size the ionized impurity scattering. The magnetic susceptibility was found to be essentially diamagnetic independently of grain size, and to vary slightly with temperature. The weak temperature dependence of the susceptibility can be explained by taking into account the three contributions of ion cores, conduction electrons, and trace amounts of magnetic impurities. From the analysis of the susceptibility due to conduction electrons, the band gap energy was determined to be about 70–80 meV, consistent with a recent band structure calculation. Although the effects of nonmagnetic impurity phases segregated (Sb, etc.) on the scattering mechanism are not clear, the grain size is one of the key factors determining the transport properties of polycrystalline CoSb3. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The first continuous wave (cw) operation at room temperature of a GaAlAs short-wavelength distributed feedback (DFB) laser is reported. The cw operation at a wavelength of 759 nm was realized by use of the buried twin-ridge substrate (BTRS) structure which has an excellent current confinement efficiency in the active region. The hybrid liquid phase epitaxy and the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition growth technology were used for the fabrication of short-wavelength GaAlAs DFB BTRS lasers.

    Notes: Abstract— Membrane depolarizing agents such as veratridine, ouabain and high concentrations of potassium ions elicit a remarkable accumulation of cyclic AMP in brain slices incubated in vitro, and this accumulation, but not that elicited by biogenic amines, is prevented by a membrane stabilizer, cocaine. The effect of various local anaesthetics (compounds which are known to stabilize the membrane of peripheral sensory nerves) on the accumulation of cyclic AMP elicited by depolarizing agents in incubated slices of guinea pig brain has now been examined. At optimal concentrations the anaesthetics inhibited by more than 95 per cent the accumulation of cyclic AMP elicited with veratridine, ouabain, and high concentrations of potassium ions. The order of the inhibitory potency vs. veratridine was: dibucaine (ED50= 9.5 ± 10−6 M) 〉 tetracaine 〉 cocaine (ED50= 1·3 ± 10−4 M) 〉 lidocaine 〉 procaine (ED50= 1.7 ± 10−3M). This order is consistent with the order of their local anaesthetic potency, but is not consonant with the order of the relative toxicity of these agents when used as spinal anaesthetics.

    Notes: Abstract— Adenosine metabolism in the homogenate of brain mainly undergoes deamination to inosine and hypoxanthine, while uniformly labelled [14C]adenosine injected into the carotid artery or [8-14C]adenosine incubated with brain slices was mostly phosphorylated to [14C]adenine nucleotides in brain cells. Adenosine kinase has now been partially purified from homogenates of guinea pig brain. The kinase preparation was free of adenosine deaminase, almost free of adenosine triphosphatase and had a Km of the order of 2 × 10-5M for adenosine.Kinetic studies with brain slices showed that adenosine reached the cells by diffusion and that the diffusion was facilitated by subsequent phosphorylation to adenine nucleotides. From the following experimental results, it is concluded that the phosphorylation is catalysed by adenosine kinase quantitatively. (1) During the uptake and phosphorylation of adenosine by brain slices, the nucleoside did not split to adenine and ribose moieties. (2) The rate of formation of adenine nucleotides in the slices was a hyperbolic function of the concentration of adenosine in the medium, showing an apparent Km foradenosine of the order of 2 × 10-5 M. (3) Some analogues of adenosine inhibited both the facilitated diffusion of adenosine and the kinase activity, but ouabain (0.005 mM) did not inhibit either.

    Notes: Radioactive adenine has been frequently used to label cyclic adenosine 3′, 5′-monophosphate (cAMP) in diverse cells and tissues (Kuo and DeRenzo, 1969; Shimizu, Daly and Creveling, 1969, Brooker, 1971). We have previously reported that cAMP from the guinea-pig cerebral cortex is derived from a precursor pool of adenine nucleotides which is more highly labelled than the bulk cellular ATP (Shimizu, Creveling and Daly, 1970a). The present study was carried out to throw additional light on the property of the precursor pool. Levels of cAMP and ATP and specific activities of [14C]cAMP and [14C]ATP were determined simultaneously in cerebral slices which were prelabelled with [14C]adenine and subsequently incubated with veratridine, histamine or adenosine.
