Notes: Controlling vertical Bloch line (VBL) position and stripe domain chopping in multiple stripe domains, aligned in parallel by a period of 12 μm, are studied experimentally using a 5-μm bubble garnet film. Patterned high coercive-force CoPt films aligned in parallel are used for stabilizing the stripe domain. During the stripe stretching process, the VBL motion at the stripe head was controlled by the dc conductor current to get two different wall states: one with a VBL at the stripe head and the other without VBL. Stripe chopping experiments for VBL detection have been performed using hairpin and meandering conductors. We found that the meandering conductor presents excellent characteristics; the bias field margin and the chopping pulse amplitude margin are 58 Oe±6% and 133 mA±11%, respectively, for one stripe. VBL generation by the meandering conductor has also been studied using the same sample.

Notes: Thin films of III-V nitride semiconductors (AlN, GaN, InN), mixed-crystalline films (AlxIn1−xN), and multilayered films (GaN/InN)n were grown by rf magnetron sputtering at low substrate temperatures below 500 °C. These films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, optical absorption, and electrical measurements; it was proved that they have high crystal quality comparable to the previously reported data obtained by other growth methods. Dependence of the band-gap energy of AlxIn1−xN on composition x was determined. Multilayered films of (GaN/InN) were prepared for the first time; these films showed the characteristic diffusion property to make an ordered-alloy superlattice.

Notes: Summary Histamine antagonists were infused into the third ventricle of the cerebrum in rats. All the H1-, but none of the H2-antagonists tested, induced initial feeding during the early portion of the light phase when histamine level was highest. No periprandial drinking was observed. Ambulation increased during feeding. The effect on feeding was attenuated when brain histamine was normally low during the early portion of the dark phase, or was decreased by α-fluoromethylhistidine. Hypothalamic neuronal histamine may suppress food intake through H1-receptors, and diurnal fluctuations of food intake may mirror neuronal histamine levels.

Notes: Summary A cytochemical study of gastric K+-stimulated p-nitrophenylphosphatase (K-NPPase) activity, corresponding to a K+-stimulated phosphoprotein phosphatase of H-K-ATPase system, has been made by a new cytochemical method. Sections of fixed guinea pig gastric mucosa in a mixture of 2% paraformaldehyde and 0.25% glutaraldehyde, were incubated with the incubation medium (1.0 M glycine-0.1 M KOH buffer, pH 9.0, 2.5 ml; 1.1 M KCl, 0.5 ml; 10 mM lead citrate dissolved in 50 mM KOH, 4 ml; levamisole, 6.0 mg; dimethyl sulfoxide, 2.0 ml; 0.1 M p-nitrophenylphosphate (Mg-salt), 1.0 ml; ouabain, 73.0 mg) for 30 min at room temperature. Under a light microscope the specific gastric K-NPPase reaction was distributed only in the parietal cells of the fundic glands. The electron microscopic cytochemistry showed that the gastric K-NPPase activity was localized on the membrane lining the apical surfaces, secretory canaliculi and tubulovesicles. On the other hand, ouabain-sensitive K-NPPase activity (Na-K-ATPase) was demonstrated to localize only in the basolateral membrane of parietal cells with Mayahara's method. These findings support the interrelationships between the apical surface membrane, secretory canalicular membrane and tubulovesicles, and the functional differentiation of the membrane between the secretory membrane and basolateral membrane.

Notes: Abstract Amaranth was a major crop among the Aztecs. In Mexico the seed is popped and eaten with brown sugar. The crude protein content of the seed is 14±2% but its contents of lysine and tryptophan are 6.2 and 1.6 g/16 g N respectively. We developed a popping method based on a fluid bed system (FBS) whereas the traditional method (TM) is just to pop the seeds manually in a hot plate. Assays carried out were evaluation of racemization of the amaranth protein due to heat treatment, amino acid composition of the raw and heat treated seeds and a biological experiment testing whether leucine was the most limiting amino acid of amaranth protein. Male rats were fed both popped amaranths and roasted amaranth. Parboiled amaranth and casein were controls. The results were: (a) Lys, Arg and Cys were damaged in the heat treated seeds; (b) Asp, Met, Glu, Ala and Phe were racemized in that decreasing order in the seeds popped and roasted by the TM; (c) the estimated net protein retention (NPR) and estimated net protein utilization (NPU) of popped amaranths by either method were not different, but were lower than for the parboiled amaranth. The parboiled amaranth was not different from casein; (d) Leu was not the most limiting amino acid in any of the amaranth seeds tested. After Lys, sulfur amino acids appear to be the next most limiting in severely heat treated amaranth. The FBS seems to be a promising method for popping amaranth at industrial level.

Notes: Study was made concerning both the rate of crosslinking and the structure of crosslinks of terpolymers that have dicyclopentadiene, 1, 4-hexadiene, methylene norbornene, and ethylidene norbornene for termonomers so as to look into the role of termonomers during crosslinking of ethylene propylene terpolymers. In the study, activation energy and frequency factor, both apparent were determined by the rate constant of crosslinking and differences in crosslinks were analyzed following both chemical and physical methods. Infrared analysis into the volume of consumption of double bond was adopted to examine the manner of crosslinking. In respect to the magnitude of the rate constant, ethylidene norbornene came in first being followed by 1,4-hexadiene, methylene norbornene, and dicyclopentadiene. The structure of termoners affected the apparent activation energy and the apparent frequency factor was subject to the influences of said structure and others including the variation in the degree of unsaturation. During the early stage of crosslinking, the formation of the crosslink of polysulfide-type was paramount to all others and the speed of conversion therefrom either to disulfide-type or to monosulfide varied with the kind of terpolymers and was in proportion to the rate constant of crosslinking.

Notes: A new high-temperature attenuated total reflectance apparatus (HATR) was constructed and used at different temperatures for making infrared measurements on the same liquid or solid sample. It was found that this method was applicable to the continuous quantitative analysis of changes occurring during chemical reactions such as polymerization, isomerization, and crosslinking. In the bulk polymerization of styrene, the process of monomer consumption could be followed progressively. In the crosslinking reaction of high cis-polybutadiene by sulfur-accelerator or peroxide crosslinking systems, the decrease of cis content and its partial isomerization to trans structure was measured. Furthermore, in the crosslinking reaction of ethylene-propylene terpolymers (EPDM), the consumption of double bonds was observed over the course of the reaction with both sulfur-accelerator and peroxide crosslinking systems. The effect was greatest in the case of methylenenorbornene-type EPDM.
