Notes:
Summary After incubation of thymine 14C-tracers with separated epidermis of guinea pigs and an NADPH1 regenerating system, dihydrothymien and β-ureidoisobutyric acid were found by chromatography as radioactive catabolites. They are the first two members of the breakdown pathway of thymine, known in other mammalian tissues, and may explain why this constituent of nucleic acids is lost during the epidermal keratinisation. Furthermore, the riboside of thymine were found, a compound, which is, in the free state, generally thought, to be only a breakdown product of transfer-RNA, but which seems, in contrast to this assumption, to be synthesized directly by a nucleosidase under the conditions of our experiments.
