Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract The various reasons for current efficiency losses in indirect electrochemical processing are considered. Using the Cr(VI) oxidation ofo-toluene sulphonamide as a model, it is shown that accretion of organic residues is an important factor contributing to current efficiency losses. Other evidence is provided to suggest that film formation on the electrode surface acts selectively to promote oxygen evolution rather than Cr(III) re-oxidation.

Notes: Abstract A short review of the methods of preparation of magnetite anodes and the physico-chemical properties of Fe3O4 is followed by experimental results using chlorine evolution as a test reaction. Problems arising in the operation of composite magnetite-titanium structures are considered.

Notes: Abstract A microprocessor-linked programmable calculator instrument is described. Current-voltage readings taken at predetermined intervals of time can be read, stored and passed to the calculator where they may be processed to yield Tafel slope data, ohmic drops, areas under curves (for cyclic voltammetry) or used in open-circuit decay calculations. The results may also be fed to a paper-tape punch for storage or graphplotting using a larger computer.

Notes: Abstract The literature on gas-evolving electrodes is reviewed. Cell voltage measurements are reported for an undivided cell in NaOH at 70° C in which the cathode was mild steel plate, mild steel mesh or composites of both these materials. The anode was Ni-plated mild steel sheet or mesh. Variation in the structure of one electrode, leaving the other unchanged allowed changes in overvoltage to be measured. It is shown that substantial voltage reductions can be obtained using multiplex electrode structures and that these are mainly explicable in terms of specific surface areas. Sheet electrodes are seen to be more efficient than mesh ones on this basis however. It is shown that sheet electrodes with very high specific surface areas show significantly higher overvoltages than electrodes of low specific area and this surprising result is interpreted in terms of bubble entrapment.
