    Notizen: Abstract  The properties of the K+ channel activated by acetylcholine (ACh) and adenosine (Ado) were examined in single ferret ventricular myocytes using patch-clamp techniques. In the whole-cell configuration, ACh and Ado induced an inwardly rectifying K+ current and shortened the action potential duration. The effect of ACh was blocked by atropine, while the Ado effect was interrupted by 8-cyclopentyl,1,2-dipropyl xanthine, a specific Ado A1 receptor antagonist. In cell-attached recordings, ACh and Ado added to the pipette solution activated a single population of inwardly rectifying K+ channels, distinct from the i K1 channel. The channel had a slope conductance of ∼40 pS in symmetrical 150 mM K+ solutions and a mean open time of 0.8 ms. Excision of the patch into the inside-out patch configuration in guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-free solution abolished the channel activity. The channel was reversibly reactivated by adding GTP to the intracellular side of the patch. GTPγS activated the channel irreversibly. When the inside-out patch was treated with the A protomer of pertussis toxin (PTX), intracellular GTP no longer activated the K+ channel. The results show that ferret ventricular myocytes possess a K+ channel activated by both muscarinic and Ado A1 receptors. Its electrophysiological properties and the gating by a PTX-sensitive G protein in a membrane-delimited fashion are identical with those of the muscarinic K+ channels in nodal and atrial tissues of other species. In conclusion, the G protein-gated muscarinic K+ channel is expressed in ferret ventricular myocardium and may underlie the direct negative inotropism of ACh and Ado in this tissue.

    Notizen: Abstract A high-power CW 27.972 μm water-vapor laser has been developed for interferometric and polarimetric measurements of plasmas. The maximum output power and the power density in the cavity of the laser with 2.0 cm bore and 220 cm length reach 85 mW and 109 μW/cm3, respectively. An interferometer using this laser is constructed and its performance is examined as a study on polarimetric method of magnetic field measurement. Preliminary interferometric experiments are also carried out on a compact toroidal plasma with field-reversal configuration.

    Notizen: Abstract A high-power CW 27.972 μm water vapor laser has been constructed in order to use as a light source of an interferometer for plasma diagnostics. The laser consists of 220 cm length and 2.0 cm small bore Pyrex glass discharge tube, semi-confocal resonator and Michelson coupler. From the measurement of cavity detuning curves, it is found that two waveguide modes, EH11 and EH21 oscillate. The increase of the output power is found to become more than seven times larger by adding He(50%)−H2(50%) mixed gas. Under the optimum condition, the maximum output power of 65 mW or the output power per unit cavity volume of 83 μW/cm3 is obtained.

    Notizen: Abstract A fast response frequency-modulated interferometric polarimeter was designed and constructed with a single 28 μm H2O laser for high density plasma diagnostics. This newly developed modulation system employs an electro-magnetically driven movable mirror to achieve the modulation frequency beyound 1 MHz for about 100 μs duration. The movable mirror performance is studied experimentally in detail. The determination of the Faraday rotation angle is based on the zero-crossing method for the observed beat signals produced by two kinds of rotating plane-polarized waves. The feasibility of the polarimeter constructed was verified in experiments of a field-reversed thetapinch plasma.

    Notizen: The mass spectrum of mercury/cesium complex clusters (Hg)nCs+ is observed up to m/z=118 000 (n = 590). Singly charged clusters are produced by Cs+ ion bombardment. The presence of an alkali metal in the ionization process yields cluster ions of the form (Hg)nX+. The clusters are analysed using the grand-scale mass spectrometer, GEMMY, at Osaka University. The mass resolution of the instrument is high enough to resolve each cluster up to m/z=70 000. From the pattern of cluster distribution, the structrues of the large clusters can be studied. The number of Hg groups in metastable decay increases with the cluster size n. The ion intensities of the mercury/cesium clusters are much stronger than that from CsI (used for mass calibration). The mass spectrum of the clusters can therefore easily be utilized for direct mass calibration up to m/z=70 000.

    Notizen: Two types of magnesium oxide clusters, (MgO)n+ and (MgO)nMg+ have been obtained by the bombardment of magnesium with a mixture of xenon and oxygen ions. Enhanced ion intensity in the cluster mass spectra was observed at certain n values. The correlation between the geometrical structures of the clusters and their abundances is discussed.
