Notes: Summary The trace element content of kidneys has been documented in very few international centres. Significant differences can be demonstrated between the cortical and medullary levels of calcium, zinc and cadmium. For the West of Scotland the values for the latter are similar to those found in Scandinavia. There are significantly higher cadmium contents in subjects who smoke and who have evidence of ischaemic heart disease.

Notes: Summary Cadmium injection in rats affects the genito-urinary system. The renal effects are generally considered to be mainly tubular. Light microscopy of 29 specimens confirms cellular damage in the glomeruli with changes in glomerular capillaries. Electron microscopic changes in the glomeruli confirm changes in the podocytes, thickening of the basement lamina, the occurrence of electron dense deposits in association with the capillary endothelium with platelet and polymorphonuclear cell accumulations which suggests opening of the endothelial junction of the glomerular vessels.

Notes: Summary Cadmium induces a variety of effects on kidney tubules including hypercalciuria. This is accompanied by hyperzincuria. The present work shows that both of these biochemical abnormalities can be corrected but where a state of cadmium-induced-anaemia exists urine zinc and calcium excretion do not follow the expected parallel course in response to iron therapy as they do with bendrofluazide.

Notes: A Pirkle-concept chiral stationary phase (CSP) derived from N-(1-naphthyl)leucine was evaluated for developing methods to reduce analysis times and investigating techniques in the rapid screening of a variety of chiral compounds over a given chiral selector. The effects of reduced column lengths and elevated temperatures were studied to shorten analysis times.

Notes: The ability to predict and subsequently control solid-state structure has been identified as a major challenge in the field of crystal engineering. Here we suggest the concept of constitutive models as a tool for understanding crystal packings and for designing new solid-state structures. Such models are intended to relate molecular interactions and their geometrical constraints with solid-state organization. These models will most likely be of greatest use for crystals consisting of supramolecular networks, that is, infinite assemblies of small molecules associating through strong, directional, and selective noncovalent interactions. The concept of the constitutive packing model is illustrated for interpenetrated diamondoid coordination networks based on crystalline adducts of 4,4′-biphenyldicarbonitrile with silver(I) salts. Observed structural deformations induced by counterions of varying size may be understood in terms of the interference of two supramolecular networks within this system: the diamondoid metal-ligand coordination network and face-to-face aromatic stacks of the organic ligand. The constitutive model developed here has been applied to other diamondoid coordination networks in the literature and is found to be general.

Notes: Assignment of absolute configuration to a recently developed chiral selector useful in the separation of the underivatized enantiomers of naproxen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is described. Circular dichroism, 1H NMR, and X-ray diffraction have been used to confirm the original assignment which was based solely upon elution orders from HPLC chiral stationary phases. All of these techniques agree in the assignment of the (S,S) absolute configuration to the enantiomer of the chiral selector which associates preferentially with (S)-naproxen. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The results of a study on the interlaminar fracture toughness properties (G1c) of four unidirectional carbon fiber epoxy materials are presented. The selected materials included Narmco 5245C, Hexcel F584, and American Cyanamid 1806 resins reinforced with Hercules IM6 fibers and for a baseline material Narmco 5208 reinforced with T300 fibers. The G1c values determined on Double Cantilever Beam specimens were found to range from 93 to 370 J/m2. The higher values may partly result from fiber bridging during fracture. This paper discusses specimen configuration, test procedure, and the Scanning Electron Microscope results.

Notes: Four commercially available carbon fiber/prepreg systems were processed and subjected to NASA's proposed standard tests for toughened resins. Narmco Materials Inc. Rigidite T300/5208 was included as a baseline, while the other three systems employed Hercules' IM6 fiber in newgeneration resin systems. Descriptions of the tests, including open-hole tension and compression, compression after impact, double cantilever beam, and edge delamination tension, as well as results are presented.

Notes: Studies were conducted to produce faster, simpler, more rugged protocols for separating wheat proteins by high performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE). Three areas were targeted for improvement: initial capillary equilibration procedures, buffer composition, and post-separation rinsing procedures. For the initial equilibration of capillaries, a brief rinse with a hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) solution was the most critical factor for successful separation of wheat proteins. To reduce separation time and maintain resolution, β-alanine and glycine were each used in place of sodium phosphate as buffer ions. Two isoelectric buffers, aspartic acid and iminodiacetic acid (IDA) were also tested. Each of these four buffer systems generated substantially lower currents, and provided faster separations, than sodium phosphate-based buffers. Finally, post-separation rinsing procedures were re-examined with the goal of reducing the time necessary to rinse the capillary after each separation. A critical factor in achieving this goal was removal of albumins and globulins prior to separation. These proteins bind to the capillary wall and cause rising baselines and excessive peak tailing. Once these proteins were removed, capillaries could be rinsed with buffer for only 2 min between separations. Capillary equilibration procedures were shortened from 90 min to 30 min. Likewise, separation times were reduced by ∼ 40% (25 min to 15 min) by using glycine in place of sodium phosphate in the separation buffer. Finally, post-separation times were reduced by 80% (10 min to 2 min). Overall, these factors resulted in a reduction in total separation time of 50% (35 to 17 min) and maintained high resolution separations and good run-to-run repeatability.

Notes: The hyperconjugative result of bond stretching in alkenes has been studied with MM4. A low-temperature crystallographic study of 1,2-diarylindane[a]indane has been carried out, together with ab initio (MP2/6-31G*) calculations on model systems. The results are well reproduced with a force field designed to explicitly include hyperconjugation (MM4), and they show beyond doubt that hyperconjugative bond elongations exist both in theory and by experiment. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
