Notizen: Summary The horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (HVOR) and optokinetic response (OKR) were examined in alert albino rabbits following unilateral flocculectomy. Chemical flocculectomy with local application of kainic acid was used to avoid the retrograde degeneration of inferior olive neurons that accompanies surgical flocculectomy. Effects of chemical flocculectomy, however, were identical to those of surgical flocculectomy. The following functional deficiencies were observed in the movements of the ipsilateral eye: (1) reduction of the HVOR gain; (2) increased lag of the HVOR phase; (3) increased non-linearity of the relationship between the HVOR gain and the amplitude of turntable rotation; (4) decreased OKR gain; (5) delay with increased variation in the OKR phase; (6) impairment of rapid visual-vestibular interaction; (7) loss of the adaptation of the HVOR. Only a transient depression of the HVOR gain was seen in the contralateral eye. Control experiments with lesions in the paraflocculus, nodulus, and uvula, or lobules VI and VII, revealed no such deficiencies, except that lesions in the nodulus and uvula produced marked advancement of the HVOR phase. The effects of flocculectomy are consistent with present knowledge of both neuronal circuitry and activity of the rabbit flocculus.

Notizen: Summary In anaesthetized rabbits, the vestibulo-ocular reflex was evoked by electric stimulation of VIIIth nerve and was observed by recording postsynaptic potentials and relevant field potentials in Illrd nucleus. The electric stimulation of flocculus produced a prominent inhibition of the vestibulo-ocular reflex in both the inhibitory component relayed by the superior vestibular nucleus and the excitatory component mediated by the brachium conjunctivum. The excitatory component mediated by the medial vestibular nucleus appeared to be free of the flocculus inhibition. The flocculus inhibition was blocked very effectively by systemic injection of picrotoxin. That the flocculus inhibitory action is due to monosynaptic postsynaptic inhibition of secondary vestibular neurones was demonstrated by direct stimulation of, and also by recording from, the superior nucleus. Recording from the superior nucleus was also performed in anaesthetized cats. All of these above results indicate that Purkinje cells in flocculus projecting to vestibular and cerebellar nuclei cells have inhibitory synaptic action. Flocculus stimulation produced also an excitatory effect upon vestibular nuclei neurones. However, this effect could be attributed to intracerebellar activation of the primary vestibular fibers which pass into the flocculus.

Notizen: Summary After the dorsal cap and adjacent ventrolateral outgrowth regions of the inferior olive had been chronically destroyed in the rabbits, the eye movements evoked by local stimulation of the flocculus were reduced in amplitude and reversed in direction, indicating that the inhibition by flocculus Purkinje cells of vestibulo-ocular relay neurons could no longer be actuated by the stimulation.

Notizen: Summary Adaptability of the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (HVOR) and the optokinetic response (OKR) was examined in alert albino rabbits during sustained runs lasting 5–12 h under four different stimulus conditions. (1) Sinusoidal rotation of the rabbit in darkness by 5 ° at 1/10 Hz, or (2) sinusoidal movement of a vertical slit light by 2.5 ° or 5 ° at 1/10 Hz around the optical axis of the stationary rabbit, affected the gain of neither the HVOR nor the OKR. (3) Combination of the stimulus as in (1) with the stationary slit light increased the gain of the HVOR gradually. A plateau at about 140% of the initial control was reached in 5 h. (4) Combination of the stimulus as in (1) with the slit light movement by 10 ° in phase with the turntable decreased the HVOR gain gradually, a plateau being obtained at about 70 % of the initial control in 5 h. Changes of the HVOR gain induced in conditions (3) and (4) were not frequency-specific and accompanied by no significant modification of either the gain or phase of the OKR or the linear property of HVOR-OKR interaction. A small but significant change of the HVOR phase was also detected under the condition (3) but not (4).

Notizen: The structure and formation mechanism of carbon gel in carbon black filled polyisoprene composites were studied by the pulsed NMR technique. The composites were prepared from a wide range of molecular weights by a solution blend. The carbon gels were extracted from the composites by a solvent-extraction method. The content of carbon gel was not governed by the molecular weight of rubber but was controlled by the viscosity of rubber solutions which were used for the blend. Three rubber phases, having different spin-spin relaxation times, were detected in all the carbon gels. The increase of carbon gel content in the composites was mainly from the increase of highly mobile rubber phase, and the gel became soft with the development of this phase. On the other hand, the content and structure of glassy rubber phases were not affected by the size of the carbon gel, and they showed almost a constant value despite the large change in the carbon gel content. A part of the highly mobile rubber phase in the gels could be removed by solvent extraction at high temperature. These results suggest that the formation of carbon gel is primarily governed by two factors: One is the well-known rubber-carbon black interaction, and the other is a physical crosslink between the carbon gel and unbound rubber molecules during blend. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Abstract Quadrupeds can acquire new gait patterns with respect to environmental changes. Yanagihara et al. have demonstrated this adaptability by experiments on a decerebrate cat. These experiments indicate that quadrupeds gradually adapt to their environment by repeating locomotion in a steady environment, and that the acquired gait pattern is persistently memorized after the locomotion. Our research aims at formulating a mathematical model of these cats' behavior and constructing a quadrupedal walking robot to realize such adaptive behavior. To date, we have proposed a mathematical description of adaptation at the level of gait pattern generation using neural oscillators. In this paper, we extend it to take into account limb dynamics. We study how to design the interaction of the oscillator and limb dynamics.

Notizen: The present study investigated properties of various mixtures of organic acids (malic and malonic) and calcium phosphate compounds (β-tricalcium phosphate, ashed bovine bone, and synthetic hydroxyapatite) with the objective of determining the optimum combination of organic acid and calcium phosphate compound for components of a chitosan-bonded bone-filling paste. β-tricalcium phosphate was decomposed by malic acid and malonic acid, but these two acids did not decompose synthetic hydroxyapatite and ashed bovine bone. Assessment of ion release from a set paste containing either synthetic hydroxyapatite or ashed bovine bone indicated that only calcium ions were appreciably released after storing and stirring the set paste in physiologic saline for 7 days. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: In the Japanese Industrial Standard for the x-ray fluorescence analysis of steels, the ‘estimated binary calibration curve’ method has been adopted. In this method, the calibration curve for the binary system, consisting of an analyte and the principal constituent elements is estimated and derived by using multicomponent standard samples. The measured x-ray intensity is first converted into a tentative analytical value from this calibration curve, and then the analytical result is derived from this tentative value using the correction procedure. In this paper, some methods and standard samples of making the estimated binary calibration curve are compared and discussed, also, the characteristics of the JIS method are described.

Notizen: The Raman spectra of solid complexes formed between halogens as electron donors and benzene and methylated benzenes as electron acceptors were measured at 77 K. Great increase in intensity was observed for the Raman lines ν10(e1g), ν16(e2u) and ν17(e2u) of benzene on complex formation. The great intensity enhancement of these out-of-plane bending modes is reasonably explained as the result of mixing of the 1A2u (σπ*) state of benzene and the charge transfer state. The observed spectra are consistent with the crystal structure of factor group C3ν, having one halogen molecule and one benzene molecule in a unit cell, which was proposed by Person et al. from the infrared spectra. It was found that the Raman spectra of the complexes provide a good test for the Raman intensity mechanism proposed for benzene and also give important information about electronic excited states which are not identifiable by other means.
