Notizen: Summary The stainless steel cannula inserting method was modified for application to observe vascular responses to thiopentone in the isolated basilar arteries of the dog and monkey. In the dog, thiopentone (0.01–3 mg) induced a monophasic vasoconstriction in a dose-dependent manner. On the other hand, in the monkey, thiopentone (0.01–3 mg) showed a biphasic vascular response,i.e., an initial vasoconstriction followed by a vasodilatation in a dose-dependent manner. Thiopentone usually produced much more potent vasoconstriction in the dog than that in the monkey, while potassium chloride made little difference of vasoconstriction between the dog and monkey basilar arteries. These findings suggest that thiopentone exerts a direct constrictive effect on cerebral vessels, the actions of which decrease the total cerebral blood volume and the brain bulk, allowing a reduction in intracranial pressure.

Notizen: Abstract We report a 2-month-old Japanese boy presenting with large multiple haemangiomas invading his liver. He was treated with daily subcutaneous injection of interferon alfa (IFN-α)-2a with progressive reduction of the hepatic haemangioma. He developed a scrotal mass 2 months after discontinuation of IFN, and this mass eventually required surgical management. Resected tumour was a juvenile haemangioma. The escape of this haemangioma from IFN therapy may be correlated to the quite low level of injected IFN in testis. Conclusion IFN therapy may not be curative for testicular haemangioma although it is effective in shrinking haemangiomas of the liver and skin.

Notizen: Abstract We analyzed mutant genotypes at the human phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) locus among phenylketonuria (PKU) patients in the Far East of Russia. A total of 60 variant alleles from 30 PKU families were analyzed for prevalent Caucasian mutations and restriction fragment length polymorphism/variable number of tandem repeats (RFLP/VNTR) haplotypes. Seventy-eight percent of all variant alleles carried six mutations. The most prevalent mutation was R408W (63%), with a haplotype background of 2.3. It also showed a very high degree of homozygosity (43%). The other five mutations (R158Q, R261Q, R252W, R261X, and IVS12nt-1) accounted for 1.7%–6.7% of all PKU alleles, and a single haplotype was associated with each genotype, except for R261Q. The genetic structure of PKU patients in the Far East of Russia seems to be relatively homogeneous, compared with that in the other Slavic and Oriental populations of surrounding countries. Prediction of a clinical phenotype and carrier detection will be feasible using DNA tests.
