Notes: Abstract Pharmacological evidence has suggested the presence of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin), 5-HT1D receptors on endothelial cells but these receptors have never been identified unambiguously on this type of cells. We now report that human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) express 5-HT1D receptors coupled to inhibition of cyclic AMP formation. 5-HT and the 5-HT1D receptor agonists 5-carboxamidotryptamine (5-CT) and sumatriptan were approximately equipotent at inhibiting forskolin-stimulated cyclic AMP accumulation in HUVEC (mean pEC50 7.6–8.2, maximal effect 30% inhibition). The 5-HT1A receptor agonist, 8-OH-DPAT was clearly less potent (pEC50 6.2) and less efficacious. The selective 5-HT1D receptor antagonist, GR127935 (1 nM) markedly inhibited the effect of 5-HT (apparent pKB 10.8). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis showed the mRNA for 5-HT1Dβ receptors to be expressed in HUVEC. These results demonstrate the presence of functional 5-HT1D receptors and the expression of 5-HT1Dβ receptor mRNA in HUVEC. They support the involvement of 5-HT1Dβ receptors in endothelial-mediated responses to 5-HT.

Notes: Abstract Absolute pionic x-ray intensities have been measured for Mg and Fe. The accuracy achieved was 2% of the line intensity for the most prominent transitions. In the Balmer series of Mg and the Paschen series of Fe the crossover transitions were found to be even more attenuated than the transitions between circular states, as deduced, for example, by comparison with muonic atoms; no crossover transitions were observed in the Fe Balmer series. According to cascade calculations based on the experimental intensities more than half of the pions are absorbed in Fe already from levels with principal quantum numbern〉17 by strong interaction.

Notes: Abstract The yields of the atomic 4→3 transitions in antiprotonic14N,16,17,18O,19F, and23Na were measured at the CERN antiproton facility, LEAR. From these, the widths Γup of the 4f levels were determined to be 136±19meV (14N); 603±22 meV (16O); 731±35 meV (17O); 795±23 meV (18O); 2.79±0.16 eV (19F); and 23.8±7.4 eV (23Na).

Notes: Abstract The strong ¯p-nucleus spin-orbit interaction was investigated in a measurement of the strong-interaction effects of the 9→8 transition in ¯p 174Yb at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN. This measurement was part of an experimental programme where, for the first time, the fine-structure components of the last observable X-ray transition in a ¯p atom, which carries information on the strong ¯p-nucleus interaction, were resolved and studied individually. The observed splitting ΔE exp=2408±26 eV consists of the electromagnetic fine-structure splitting ΔE FS=2350 eV and an additional splitting Δɛ=58±26 eV. In addition, one finds a significant difference in the level widths of Δ=195±59 eV with the larger value⇊=1216±41 eV for the lower fine-structure level. This experiment follows an earlier measurement on ¯p 138Ba, where the transition 8→7 is influenced by the strong interaction. In this case, however, the fine-structure components could not be resolved. The results for174Yb may be attributed to a spin-orbit (LS) term in the complex strong-interaction potential.

Notes: The well known procedure of determining the degree of crystallinity by means of measuring the density presupposes the knowledge of both the densities ρc and ρa of the crystalline and of the noncrystalline regions. By combination of small-angle and wide-angle x-ray scattering and of density measurements it can be shown that this method is not justified in the case of drawn polyethylene if the values of ρc and ρa known from isotropic material are used. Both ρc and ρa depend considerably on annealing and drawing conditions. In addition the effective density ρc* of the more densely packed phase in a two-phase structure is much lower than the value ρc calculated from the positions of the x-ray reflections due to a large number of lattice defects. This conclusion is based on the results of three independent sets of experiments: determination of the mean-square fluctuation of density 〈η2〉 by means of x-ray small-angle scattering; x-ray wide-angle measurements of the positions of the crystal reflections and of the halo arising from the noncrystalline regions; and comparison of densities and long periods of samples treated at various annealing temperatures.

Notes: Previous studies by Black and Blomquist on the degradative failure of polymer-metal adhesive bonds have shown that composite failure depends largely on the type of metal substrate employed. In the work reported herein, metal powders of high surface area have been employed to maximize the metal-polymer interface. The composite systems studied consisted for aluminum and iron with polycondensates of bisphenol A-diglycidyl ether, phenol-formaldehyde and poly-2,2′-(m-phenylene)-5,5′-bibenimidazole. The composites were prepared in the absence of air and thermally degraded in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer while the degradation products were continuously monitored from mass 1 to 200. In the polymer and polymer-metal systems investigated, iron accelerated the decomposition of all polymers studied. This was determined by plotting m/e against degradation temperature for the more common mass peaks such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide for the carbon-hydrogen-oxygen-containing polymer and hydrogen cyanide and ammonia for the carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen-containing polymer. This technique offers promise in determining the nature of the interface as well as the effect of the interface on polymer degradation.

Description / Table of Contents: The metal forming process is one of the complicates mechanical deformation process. Up to this time, the investigations are mainly directed to the macroscopically point of view. Metal forming models are based on continuum mechanical methods. In opposite to the continuum mechanical deformation theory is the physics of metals. It is the aim of the paper, to discuss the developed technical supposition for using the micro-visioplasticity, an new method of micro-grid application and results of micro-grid deformation using an upsetting press.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion tests with nickel-plated sheets of killed and rimmed steelWith a number of different types of steel plates (killed and rimmed steel, Thomas steel, Siemens Martin steel, square steel), research has been carried out on the influence of the base metal on the effectiveness of the corrosion protection afforded by the galvanic nickel plating. With plates of the different types of steel subjected to the same finishing treatment, neither the short-time ferroxyle test nor the salt spray test nor storage under moist conditions revealed any noticeable differences in the corrosion resistance of the nickel plating. Minor differences between different types of plates, as they are sometimes observed with out door corrosion, were not noticeable with the short-time test. The investigations lead to the conclusion that, contrary to widespread opinion, killed steel can be nickel-plated with the same corrosion protection effect as rimmed steel.
