    Notizen: Summary Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent angiogenic factor. VEGF levels in ocular tissue of 6-, 12-, 18- and 28-week-old Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats, a well-known model of non-insulin-dependent diabetes, were evaluated by highly sensitive ELISA. VEGF concentrations in the GK rat as well as in non-diabetic Wistar rat significantly decreased from the age of 6 weeks to 18 weeks. However, although VEGF concentrations in the Wistar rat continued to fall significantly from 18 to 28 weeks of age, the levels were maintained between 18 and 28 weeks of age in GK rats. Levels were significantly different between the GK and Wistar rats at 28 weeks of age. Results of immunohistochemical studies of the eyes of Wistar and GK rats at 28 weeks of age suggest diffuse distribution of this cytokine in cells of neural origin. Weak to moderate VEGF immunoreactivity was exhibited mainly in the ganglion cell layer, inner plexiform layer and inner/outer nuclear layers in rats with and without diabetes. However, in the retinal optic nerve fiber layer, retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, strong VEGF immunoreactivity was noted only in the GK rat. In conclusion, increased VEGF production in certain ocular tissue, similar to that in humans, is observed quite early, at least before the appearance of observable retinal changes in the diabetic GK rat. This also suggests that the GK rat can be used as a model of initial or latent phase diabetic retinopathy. [Diabetologia (1997) 40: 726–730]

    Notizen: Summary To investigate the role of human aldose reductase (hAR) in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications, we generated transgenic mice carrying hAR cDNA driven by the murine MHC class I molecule promoter (hAR-Tg). Northern and Western blot analyses and immunoassay of hAR revealed that both hAR mRNA and the protein were expressed in all tissues tested. Thrombosis in renal vessels and fibrinous deposits in Bowman's capsule were observed in 6-week-old hAR-Tg mice fed a normal diet. Ingestion of a 30 % glucose diet for 5 days caused sorbitol concentrations in the liver, kidney, and muscle of hAR-Tg mice to be elevated significantly. Seven-week-old hAR-Tg mice fed a 20 % galactose diet for 7 days developed cataracts and occlusion of the retinochoroidal vessels, in addition to pathological changes in the kidney. Despite an elevated aldose reductase level in hAR-Tg mice and their intake of an aldose diet, no histopathological changes were found in other tissues, including the brain, lungs, heart, thymus, spleen, intestine, liver, muscle, spinal cord, or sciatic nerve. Results suggest that target organs of diabetic complications, such as the kidney, lens, and retina are sensitive to damage associated with a high level of AR expression, but other organs are not; the susceptibility of each organ to diabetic complications is determined by not only hAR but also other factors.     Notizen: Abstract  The preparation and photocatalysis of colloidal titania modified with Ru(2,2′-bipyridyl)3 2+-grafted polyacrylate were investigated. Visible light irradiation of the Ru(2,2′-bipyridyl)3 2+-tethered titania in pH 7.0 buffer solution gave electron transfer to methyl viologen to form the cation radical via electron migration from the Ru(II) complex to the titania surface.

    Notizen: Thiazolium salt polymers synthesized by quaternization of 4-(4′-vinylphenyl)thiazole (VPT) polymers with methyl iodide had a highly catalytic activity for “the formose reaction.” Their catalytic activities were comparable to that of a low molecular weight analog, 3-methyl-4-phenylthiazolium iodide (MPTI). In the reaction catalyzed by the polymer catalyst, a main product, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), was detected by gas-liquid chromatography. The polymer catalysts were easily recovered from the reaction mixture and reused with a sustained catalytic activity. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: We characterized three low-molecular-weight thiazolium salt analogues: N-methyl-5-(2′-benzyloxyethyl)-4-methylthiazolium iodide (MBMTI), N-methyl-4-phenylthiazolium iodide (MPTI), and N-methylbenzothiazolium iodide (MBTI). MBMTI, having high-electron density on the thiezolium ring, was found to be a durable thiazolium salt in buffer solution. Then, the polymer-supported thiazolium salt catalyst having MBMTI structure as a catalytic site for acyloin condensation was prepared by the polymerization of the corresponding thiazole monomer and the following quaternization. The polymer catalyst had excellent catalytic activity even in buffer solution, while the corresponding low molecular weight catalyst did not show any activity in aqueous system. Furthermore, the durable polymer catalyst could be reused under the aqueous condition. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Since 4-vinylbenzyl N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate (VBDC) polymer easily cleaves at the C - S bond and generates benzyl radical, graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) or 4-vinylpyridine (VPy) onto VBDC polymer is easily performed by UV irradiation. The structural analyses of the graft copolymers are performed through glass transition temperature measurements. The graft copolymers of MMA have one Tg and VPy graft copolymers have two Tg's arising from the main and side chains. It becomes clear that the mode of side chains propagation is significantly different for each of the second monomers used.

    Notizen: A thermotropic liquid crystal polymer with photosensitive groups (liquid crystal photoresist), copoly(4-methoxyphenyl) 4′-(2″-acroloyloxy ethoxy) benzoate (MPAEB)-4-vinylbenzyl cinnamate (VBC) was prepared, and its thermal behavior was characterized by a differential scanning calorimetry. The copolymer exhibited a liquid crystal mesophase between approximately 70°C and 120°C. In the mesophase, poly(MPAEB-VBC) (85/15) had a higher photo-crosslinking ability than that at room temperature and at 140°C, where the copolymer exhibited the isotropic phase. It was found that the liquid crystal photoresist had a high crosslinking ability owing to alignment of its photosensitive groups. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: A new three component photoinitiator system consisting of a dye, an iron arene complex, and a phenylglycine derivative was investigated by fluorescence quenching experiments and laser flash photolysis. The efficiency of a three-component system in photopolymerization reactions is higher by a two-fold factor compared to that of the two-component system. The first step of the photoreaction occurs between the dye and the iron arene complex. The iron arene complex reacts either with the singlet excited dye or with the triplet excited dye according to the nature of the dye. An electron transfer occurs in these systems. The mechanism was discussed in terms of the absence of the formation of a terminating radical in the three-component system. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
