Notes: Graft polymerization of styrene using a glass fiber having pendent mercaptan groups was carried out under nitrogen in sealed tubes. The percent grafting appeared to increase with monomer concentration, and also to depend to a large extent on the initiator concentration. When CHPO was used as initiator, the percent grafting was maximum at the initiator concentration of 0.02 mol/L. The percent grafting saturation values decreased with increase in the temperature of polymerization. Chain transfer constants and grafting efficiency, both calculated from the equation of Fox et al., were compared with the experimental results. The absorption of Ag ion increased with increase in the percent grafting, and a maximum appeared at a solution pH of 4.0.

Notes: Modified glass fibers, containing unsaturated hydrocarbon surface groups, were prepared by a hydrothermal treatment, with allylglycidylether in excess as reagent. Graft polymerization of the treated glass fiber with styrene and methylmethacrylate was carried out in sealed tubes, under nitrogen, using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and cumene hydroperoxide (CHPO) as initiators. When BPO was used as the initiator, the grafting efficiency was extremely low, but the graft copolymerization behavior was similar to that of usual organic polymers. With CHPO, both grafting ratio and grafting efficiency were very high. Various properties of composite materials containing grafted glass cloth were studied. Flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength increased proportionally to the increase of the grafting ratio; the same values were decreased only in a small extent after the boiling test.

Notes: The synthesis of reactive glass fiber having isocyanate groups were tried by reacting silanol groups on the surface of glass fiber with diisocyanate compounds. The effect of solvent, influence of the structure of diisocyanate, and effect of amine catalyst were examined, and results that the reactivity increased with increasing the polarity of solvent, when aromatic diisocyanate was used, and with increasing the basicity of amine catalyst were obtained. Further, glass fiber having isocyanate groups was addition-reacted with diol, and diol added glass fiber was synthesized.

Notes: Polycation perchlorate composites have excellent film-forming properties and high ionic conductivity. The ionic conductivity at 40°C is of the order of 10-7-10-5S·cm-1, depending on the kind of perchlorate. The temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity follows the Williams-Landel-Ferry relationship. Furthermore, the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole using polycation perchlorate composites as a solid electrolyte produces bilayer composite films.

Notes: Carbon fibers containing thiol groups were produced by reacting carbon fiber oxidized by nitric acid, with excess thiirane. Then, graft polymerization with styrene was carried out in a sealed tube under nitrogen. The following order of initiating ability of the investigated initiators was found: di-tert-butyl peroxide 〉 p-cumenyl hydroperoxide (CHPO) 〉 dodecyl peroxide 〉 benzoyl peroxide 〉 2,2′-azoisobutyronitrile. When CHPO was used as initiator, the rate of graft polymerization was maximum at [CHPO] = 0,01 mol/1. Chain transfer constant and grafting efficiency, both calculated from the equations of Fox and others, were compared with the experimental results.

Notes: A polymeric solid electrolyte with high ionic conductivity was prepared by complexing a polyurethane elastomer with LiClO4. The ionic conductivity of these complexes increases proportional to the increase of the content of poly(tetramethylene oxide) component in the polyurethane elastomer and with increasing LiClO4 concentration, and reaches a value of 10-4 S/cm at 80°C for [LiClO4] = 1,20 mmol/g polymer. The polyurethane elastomer-LiClO4 complex has good mechanical properties compared with poly(ethylene oxide)-and poly(propylene oxide)-based complexes.

Notes: The dependence of electrical characteristics of copolymer complexes on ambient humidity was studied for complexes of quaternized 4-vinylpyridine-styrene copolymer/perchlorate complexes. When the 4-vinylpyridine content in the copolymer increased, a linear decrease in resistivity was found. From this behaviour, it is concluded that the resistivity can be freely set by variation of the 4-vinylpyridine content in the design of a sensor material. Furthermore, the resistivity was the smallest in the HClO4 complex and successively became large in the order of the KClO4 complex and the LiClO4 complex. From the electrochemical aspect, it was cleared that the degree of dissociation of the counterion exerted influence upon the resistivity of these complexes.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile and acrylonitrile-styrene onto carbon fibers containing unsaturated groups was studied. Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile was found to result in a very low grafting yield in comparison with styrene, and it remained nearly constant in the latter stage of the reaction. The effects of monomer concentrations, initiators, solvents, and reaction temperature on the monomer reactivity ratios were studied by using Hayes's equation to calculate the reactivity ratio. For graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile-styrene were studied the rate of graft polymerization and the grafting yield with varying monomer compositions, both of which were found to be very low in the range of monomer compositions containing acrylonitrile at a level more than 8%. The monomer reactivity ratios for each monomer were calculated by use of the Fineman-Ross method after the analytical determination of compositions of both grafted copolymer and ungrafted copolymer, and it was found that the monomer reactivity ratios for the grafted copolymer were very different from those for the ungrafted copolymer.

Notes: Cadmium sulfide (CdS) was encapsulated in poly(methylmethacrylate), poly(styrene) or poly(vinylcarbazole) by the encapsulating polymerization process, and its photoconductivity was investigated. As result, it was observed a remarkable light-sensitive effect. The light sensitive effect of CdS encapsulated in poly(methylmethacrylate) (C-MMA-CdS) is particularly marked and depends largely on the encapsulation rate. The photosensitive mechanisms of encapsulated cadmium sulfide (C-CdS), CdS material, and CdS/polymer dispersion composites were discussed and compared. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the dark current and the initial rising rate of the sensitizing photocurrent were studied.

Notes: Polymer blends of PEEK with PES were prepared by the solution blending method. Copolymers composed of PEEK and PES components were synthesized from these oligomers. The formation conditions exerted an influence over the molecular aggregation and the crystallization behaviors of the blend films and block copolymers which were examined by X-ray diffractometry and DSC analysis. As a result, phase-separation in the blend films was found when the formation temperature was high. The blend films formed at 340°C, quenched and annealed at 180°C, exhibited the same crystallization behavior as those of PEEK. In the case of the blend films formed at 300°C, the annealing of the films at 250°C was required to crystallize the blend films. The Tg of a copolymer with a PEEK component content of more than 50% tends to shift toward a higher temperature than the Tg of PEEK itself, and the Tm of the copolymer toward a lower temperature than that of PEEK ist.
