Notes: Abstract The Photoconductive characteristics of TiO2 films prepared by the sol-gel method, and the photovoltaic characteristics fabricated with the resulting TiO2 film and phthalocyanine nickel (NiPc) are investigated. For a TiO2 film with hydroxypropyl cellulose (Hpc) heat treated at 500°C for 10 min, the relative sensitivity is about ten times higher than that without Hpc. A space-charge-limited current is observed in the dark current–voltage characteristic of the TiO2 film with Hpc. It is found that the TiO2 film with Hpc has a photosensitizing effect. The photovoltaic characteristics of TiO2(Hpc)/NiPc are as follows: the short-circuit current density, Jsc is 5.6×10-7 A cm-2, the open-circuit voltage, Voc is 0.24 V, the fill factor (F.F) is 0.64 and the power conversion efficiency, η is 0.73. Furthermore, the carrier transport mechanisms of the TiO2(Hpc)/NiPc photovoltaic cell are discussed.

Notes: Summary The oxidized carbon fiber having t-butyl perester groups was prepared by the esterification of acid chloride groups on the carbon fiber with t-butyl hydroperoxide. Then, graft polymerization of styrene onto the carbon fiber having t-butyl perester group was carried out. The concentration of monomer affected grafting efficiency. The grafting efficiency increases with the polymerization time and reachs a constant value above 70°C. Addition of Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ to the polymerization system at a concentration of 0.5–1.0×10 -5 mol/l gave the maximum grafting efficiency.

Notes: Summary Reaction of silanol groups on the surface of glass fiber with diisocyanates were investigated. It was found that the effect of organometallic catalysts upon the reaction varied with their metal ions or their ester substituents. Then the addition reaction of isocyanate group on glass fiber surface, with amino acid was carried out successfully to prepare a glass fiber-amino acid adduct.

Notes: Summary Reaction between diisocyanate and the hydroxyl groups on the surface of carbon fiber oxidized by nitric acid was investigated. It was found that polar solvents were favorable for the reaction. Stronger amines and Ba-laurate catalysts gave good results. Further, rigid polyurethane foam reinforced by the carbon fiber thus prepared was found to show improved bending properties.

Notes: Abstract. The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing chloro-side group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4′-biphenol and chlorohydroquinone with either 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone (BP/CH/DF) or 1,4-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BP/CH/BF) and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior was observed in the copolymers containing 50 and 70% biphenol. Melting transition (Tm) and isotropization transition (Ti) both appeared in the DSC thermograms. A banded texture was formed after shearing the sample in the liquid crystalline state. The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s had relatively higher glass transition temperature (Tg) in the range of 168 ∼ 200 °C and lower melting temperature (Tm) in the range of 290 ∼ 340 °C. The thermal stability (Td) was in the range of 430 ∼ 490 °C.

Notes: Abstract Metal layer was deposited by the reduction of NiCl2 and CoCl2 in polyacrylonitrile film after applying an external magnetic field in directions parallel and perpendicular to the surface of the film; the magnetic properties of the metal-deposited film were investigated. When the parallel magnetic field was applied, the values of coercivity (Hc), remanent flux density (Br) and maximum flux density (Bs) increased regardless of the composition of the metal ions, compared with the case without the application of the magnetic field. From the scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction analyses, it was shown that the growth of crystalline orientation in the deposited metals was enhanced by applying a parallel magnetic field.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile and acrylonitrile-styrene onto carbon fibers containing unsaturated groups was studied. Graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile was found to result in a very low grafting yield in comparison with styrene, and it remained nearly constant in the latter stage of the reaction. The effects of monomer concentrations, initiators, solvents, and reaction temperature on the monomer reactivity ratios were studied by using Hayes's equation to calculate the reactivity ratio. For graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile-styrene were studied the rate of graft polymerization and the grafting yield with varying monomer compositions, both of which were found to be very low in the range of monomer compositions containing acrylonitrile at a level more than 8%. The monomer reactivity ratios for each monomer were calculated by use of the Fineman-Ross method after the analytical determination of compositions of both grafted copolymer and ungrafted copolymer, and it was found that the monomer reactivity ratios for the grafted copolymer were very different from those for the ungrafted copolymer.

Notes: Thermosetting mechanism of paint-use polyethersulfones was studied by utilizing FTIR/PAS and ESCA. As a result, it was confirmed that the oxygen in the air has an effect on the thermosetting mechanism. That is, the polyethersulfone film were baked from the surface, and proceeded according to reaction (4).
