Notes: Abstract. The effects of lamellar thickness on the epitaxial crystallization of polyethylene on the oriented isotatic polypropylene have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained from the bright field electron microscopy and electron diffraction show that the epitaxial orientation of the PE crystals on the iPP substrate depends not only on the thickness of the oriented iPP lamellae, but also on the lamellar thickness of PE crystals. No epitaxial orientation relationship between PE crystal and iPP substrate can be found, when the PE crystals are thicker than the lamellar thickness of iPP along the matching direction. This suggests, that the epitaxial nucleation of PE in the PE/iPP epitaxial system is controlled not only by the chain-row matching, but also by a secondary nucleation process.

Notes: Abstract. The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing chloro-side group were synthesized by nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4′-biphenol and chlorohydroquinone with either 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone (BP/CH/DF) or 1,4-bis(p-fluorobenzoyl)benzene (BP/CH/BF) and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior was observed in the copolymers containing 50 and 70% biphenol. Melting transition (Tm) and isotropization transition (Ti) both appeared in the DSC thermograms. A banded texture was formed after shearing the sample in the liquid crystalline state. The novel poly(aryl ether ketone)s had relatively higher glass transition temperature (Tg) in the range of 168 ∼ 200 °C and lower melting temperature (Tm) in the range of 290 ∼ 340 °C. The thermal stability (Td) was in the range of 430 ∼ 490 °C.

Notes: Abstract Epitaxial crystallization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in solution-cast films has been investigated by electron microscopy. The specimen-tilt technique of electron microscopy has been used to study the structural relationship between HDPE and iPP crystals. HDPE exhibits different crystalline morphologies in the two basic types of iPP spherulite textures, cross-hatched and lathlike regions. In the former, the crystallographic c axis of HDPE lamellae is in the film plane, while in the latter, the c axis of HDPE crystallites is at an angle of about 50

Notes: Abstract The microstructures of highly oriented drawn films of blends of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The average crystal size, as well as long period, crystalline content, and melting endotherm peak, decreased as LDPE was added to the blend. When the LDPE content exceeded ∼ 50%, the film texture changed from a single crystal texture to fibre symmetric. Segregation of the two polyethylenes was not detected at low LDPE contents in as-drawn or melted and recrystallized films. In the as-drawn films, a low temperature tail began to appear on endotherm melting peaks at LDPE contents ⩾70%, indicating the onset of segregation. In meltcrystallized films, however, two distinct melting endotherm peaks were visible for LDPE contents ⩾50%. An equilibrium melting point of 141° C and end surface free energy of 101 erg cm−2 (101 × 10−7 J cm−2) were determined by use of the Thomson equation. The close agreement between these values and literature values for HDPE suggested that the crystals present in HDPE/LDPE blends were thermodynamically equivalent to HDPE crystals of equal size, implying that branches were excluded from the crystalline phase.

Notes: Abstract High-rate quenching at lower temperatures will result in the formation of β-phase microcrystals in PVF2-PMMA blends with low PMMA contents directly from their melts. Annealing at higher temperature (120°C) promotes the growth of β phase. Almost pure β-phase crystallization in thin films of the blends could be obtained by this procedure. The morphology of the blends quenched and then annealed is similar to that of pure PVF2.

Notes: Abstract The effect of crystallization rate on the epitaxial interface layer thickness of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in the epitaxial system with oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) has been investigated by electron microscopy. The results of bright-field electron microscopy and electron diffraction indicate that the epitaxial growth of HDPE on iPP takes place only on the interface between them. The thickness of the epitaxial layer of HDPE is markedly affected by the crystallization rate of HDPE. The critical layer thickness of epitaxial HDPE is about 100 nm under slow crystallization conditions, e.g. isothermal crystallization at 124°C. When the crystallization rate is higher (quenching into air at room temperature), the epitaxial layer thickness of HDPE increases up to 250 nm.
