Notes: Abstract Twenty-three newly synthesized mixed-ligand complexes of oxo-vanadium(IV) and oxo-vanadium(V) were studied for antimicrobial activity. Eight of these complexes were found to have microbicidal properties. The complexes [NH4][VO(gl)2H2O (gl-H2=glycolic acid) and [VO(ACOAP)(acac-H)]H2O (ACOAP-H2=Schiff base of acetylacetone and orthoaminophenol, acac-H=acetylacetone) show broad bactericidal spectra, while the complexes [VO(ACSAM)2]OH (ACSAM-H=Schiff base of acetylacetone and sulphanilamide) and [VO(CSSAM-H)2]H2O (CSSAM-H=Schiff base of 3-carboxy salicylaldehyde and sulphanilamide) possess pronounced antidermatophytic properties. The latter is inhibitory to plant pathogenic fungi as well. Plant tumour producingAgrobacterium tumefaciens is effectively inhibitedin vitro by the complex [VO(ACTSC-Na)(acac)]H2O (ACTSC-H2=condensation product of acetylacetone and thiosemicarbazide). Minimum inhibitory concentrations of all the active complexes are within the values of 0.125–2.00 mg/ml. Out of the 7 active complexes tested for 50% inhibition of conidial germination ofHelminthosporium oryzae, a rice plant pathogen, only 1 complex, viz. [VO(acac) (ACACAACD)] (ACACAACD(H)NH4=Schiff base of acetylacetone and ammonium 2-amino-1-cyclopentene-1-dithiocarboxylate) shows a positive result. The effective concentration is 0.55 mg/ml. Three vanadium complexes were tested for insect sterilant and ovicidal properties on the red cotton bug,Dysdercus koenigi. The complex [VO(HASA-Na) (acac)]H2O (HASA-H2=Schiff base of orthohydroxy-acetophenone and anthranilic acid) was found to be a suitable male sterilant.

Notes: Abstract The extent of conservation of constitutive heterochromatin in three species of Mus viz. M. musculus, M. booduga and M. dunni, with shared cytological properties and homologous DNA sequences has been studied. The cytological properties were investigated by doing fluorescence staining and condensation inhibition of their chromosomes with Hoechst 33258. Both the parameters indicate the occurrence of a reduced quantum of “M. musculus like heterochromatin” at specific sites in the other two genomes. In situ hybridization of the nick translated 3H-labelled M. musculus satellite DNA with M. booduga and M. dunni chromosomes, also corroborates our Hoechst 33258 findings and comparable variation in the amount and site of occurrence of sequences homologous to M. musculus satellite DNA in these species are noticed. The study thus provides a good example of a gradual quantitative variation of a particular type of heterochromatin and in turn of the repetitive DNA constituting it in different related species. Further since the heterochromatin in M. booduga and M. dunni is expected to contain different repetitive DNA sequences in addition to those homologous to M. musculus satellite DNA, it is proposed that a change in the balance between two or more repetitive sequences in heterochromatin may be more crucial in its evolutionary consequences rather than a mere increase or decrease of a homogeneous repetitive sequence.

Notes: Abstract Two out of 72 cases of intracranial hemorrhage-induced polymorphous ventricular tachycardia with typical Torsade de Pointes morphology are presented. Bot patients had marked QTc prolongation more than 550 ms. In one patient (QTc: 669 ms) Torsade de Pointes degenerated into fatal ventricular fibrillation. Even though polymorphous Torsade de Pointes type ventricular tachycardia is rare during the clinical course of intracranial hemorrhage, attention should be given to the QT interval. QTc prolongation more than 550 ms may carry a high risk of Torsade de Pointes type ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation.

Notes: Abstract In vitro culture ofBrassica alba anthers on a growth medium containing inorganics of KB5 and organics, iron, sucrose and hormones of B5 resulted in a very high response of anthers (93.75%) towards callus induction. All the calli transferred to regeneration media responded favourably even after six months of callus induction. Numerous torpedo-shaped embryoids developed in clusters at many sites from each callus mass. Secondary embryogenesis and multiple shoot formation was also observed in many cases. The number of embryoids and plantlets produced by one embryogenic anther were as high as 169.8 and 17 respectively. 87% of the regenerated plants were haploids.

Notes: Summary The converting enzyme inhibitor CGS 13928C was evaluated in 15 healthy male volunteers. First the efficacy of a single oral dose of 0.5, 1, 2 or 5 mg in antagonizing the pressor response to exogenous angiotensin I was tested with continuous monitoring of the blood pressure and heart rate by an intraarterial catheter. CGS 13928C 1, 2 and 5 mg consistently reduced the response to angiotensin within 2 to 3 h and for a period exceeding the 4 h of monitoring. The 2 mg dose was hardly more effective than 1 mg and 5 mg did not further enhance the blockade. Subsequently, plasma renin and converting enzyme activity, angiotensin I, angiotensin II and aldosterone were measured serially before and up to 72 h following oral administration of either 1 mg (n=7) or 2 mg (n=8) CGS 13928C. As expected, plasma renin activity and angiotensin I rose, while plasma converting enzyme activity, angiotensin II and aldosterone fell following both doses of the drug. No side-effects occurred. In normal volunteers CGS 13928C is an effective and extremely potent, orally active converting enzyme inhibitor.

Notes: Abstract Euchromatin DNA of one X chromosome in mammalian females, which becomes facultatively heterochromatinized, is known to replicate asynchronously late in S phase compared to its active homologue. In the females of a pygmy mouse species Mus dunni, which has prominent segment of constitutive heterochromatin as the short arm of its submetacentric X chromosome, we have observed asynchronous replication of c-heterochromatin arm as well, predominant number of cells showing the segment associated with the facultatively heterochromatic X to be terminating later. The preferential later termination of replication of the c-heterochromatic arm on the “lyonized X” appears to be due to the influence of facultative heterochromatin on the adjacent constitutive heterochromatin.
