    Notizen: Summary ‘Chris’ wheat possessed genes Sr5, Sr7a, Sr8a, Sr9g and Sr12. ‘W3746’, derived from the cross ‘Chris’/‘Baart’, possessed Sr7a and Sr12. The response conferred by Sr7a was influenced by the genetic background. Although Sr7a or Sr12 alone conferred no observable resistance upon adult plants, the adult resistances of ‘Chris’ and ‘W3746’ to predominant pathotypes appeared to be associated with the interaction of Sr7a and Sr12, or genes at closely linked loci.

    Notizen: Summary A study of spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) germ plasm developed at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) showed highly significant phenotypic variability for each component of partial resistance (namely, uredial appearance period, latency period, uredial number and uredial size) to Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici. All of the wheat genotypes displayed longer uredial appearance and latency periods and decreased uredial number and uredial size when compared to the susceptible check cultivar ‘Morocco’. Positive correlations between uredial appearance period and latency period, and uredial number and uredial size, and negative correlations between uredial appearance and latency periods and uredial number and uredial size, inclusive, suggested that the components of partial resistance were either tightly linked or under pleiotropic genetic control. Compared to ‘Morocco’, all entries had slow disease progress in the field and variation occurred in the germ plasm for the area under the leaf rust progress curve. Disease progress was negatively correlated with uredial appearance and latency periods, whereas a positive correlation was observed with uredial number and uredial size. Certain genotypes displayed high levels of partial resistance resulting in low disease incidence in the field.

    Notizen: An extensive study on the turbulent drag reduction caused by the various mixtures of polyacrylamide, purified guargum, xanthangum, and their graft copolymers has been conducted at low concentrations and Re = 14,000 using a turbulent flow rheometer. It has been found in most of the cases that the drag reduction caused by mixtures shows a positive deviation from the linearly additive straight line. This effect is more prominent when the drag reduction caused by both the constituents differ appreciably. In most of the cases, the drag reduction caused by the mixtures is higher than the DR caused by either of the constituent polymers; however, the drag reduction caused by the mixture is less than the sum of the drag reduction caused by both the constituents at their respective concentration in the mixture. It has also been noticed that there is no evidence of synergism in these mixtures at low concentrations.

    Notizen: The photo- and thermooxidative degradation of different grades of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) has been studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. The oxidized films were treated with NH3 and SF4 for the rapid identification and resolution of the various carbonyl species, alcohols, and hydroperoxides. All the sample gave similar oxidation products, but in varying quantities. The heterogenity in the film was also determined by micro-FT-IR spectroscopy.     Notizen: The polybutadiene (PB) content and its microstructure in different grades of high impact polystyrene (HIPS) has been studied by various spectroscopic techniques. PB is characterized by deformation bands in FTIR spectroscopy at 994, 967, 912, and 729 cm-1. FT-Raman was used for higher constant resolution over the range of wave numbers. It provides reasonable signal to noise ratios in near IR excited Raman. Proton and 13C-NMR spectroscopy was utilized for the determination of polybutadiene content in HIPS and tacticity, and reactivity ratios. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) rubber is an excellent rubber for outdoor use. High impact polystyrene (PS) containing EPDM rubber may show improved weathering resistance. PS is incompatible with EPDM; hence bulk polymerization technique is adopted for the synthesis of graft products which show limited compatibility with PS. Two initiators were chosen at two different working temperatures to produce high grafting efficiency and grafting percentage. In the present system, it is shown that the graft copolymer and polystyrene compositions show higher improved impact strength behavior than that of the products based upon simple dispersion of EPDM in polystyrene.
