Notes: Ninety-five ovarian neoplasms were studied for ER and PR content by immunohistochemistry, and the results were compared to those of biochemical ER and PR determination in 89 cases. While there was no difference between the results of both methods of hormone receptor determination in the few non-epithelial tumors studied, there was only a low correlation between the semi-quantitative results of ER and PR immunohistochemistry, and the corresponding values of biochemical steroid receptor determination in 77 common epithelial carcinomas of the ovary. In a majority of cases with discordant results between both methods, tumors were hormone receptor positive by DCC analysis but negative by immunohistochemistry. The finding of ER or PR positive stromal cells without any evidence of hormone receptor positive epithelial tumor cells in such tumors offers a possible explanation for the apparent discrepancy. Ovarian carcinomas containing ER or PR positive epithelial tumor cells may constitute a smaller subgroup of all tumors thought to be hormone receptor positive when only results of biochemical methods of steroid receptor determination were available.

Notes: To gain a basis for diagnosing the frequent pathological changes of the porcine hoof, the fine structure of normal hoofs taken from landrace pigs was examined with the light microscope, the polarizing microscope and the electron microscope. The hoofs were taken mostly from 6 to 7 month-old slaughtered pigs, but also from younger animals, beginning at birth. The hoofs destined for light microscopical study were not softened before frozen sections were made; these sections were stained while floating on the stain. The hoof horn of the pig consists of mostly flat cells which are shaped like pancakes. The horn tubules often have oval cross sections and do not present a distinct boundary with the adjacent intertubular horn. The harder horn of the hoof has more horn tubules per mm2 than the softer horn.

Notes: The study in Wistar rats attempted to improve the occlusion technique of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) as a precise method for initiating stroke. In a first part it was necessary to study the exact anatomy of blood vessels of the brain in seven rats of 170-410 g body weight by corrosion cast. The lengths and diameters of defined locations of the blood vessels were measured. The temporary as well as the permanent methods were refined or replaced. The first one was completed in main training the physiological blood flow after temporary occlusion, while the permanent occlusion was performed by positioning a silicone cap in the MCA. A filament guide was introduced from the common carotid artery (CCA) via internal carotid artery (ICA) to guide the silicon cap at the branch of the MCA. Histological sections of the brain of rats showed 24 h after the permanent occlusion a reproducible infarct in the brain. This area corresponded very well with the supply of the MCA. The new occlusion method with a silicon cap was compared with the occlusion methods of CCA route and external carotid artery (ECA) route. The total infarct volume was significantly larger in the CCA route and ECA route groups than in the silicon cap group (means: CCA route 261 mm3; ECA route 191 mm3 vs. 128 mm3 silicon cap group; P 〈 0,05). It could be demonstrated that the new silicon cap occlusion technique imitates the pathological situation of a cerebral infarct in man. Moreover it is less invasive for the animals and more precise and reproducible regarding the infarcted area in comparison to the other occlusion methods. Based on anatomical measurements of the blood vessels the described silicon cap method can be recommended for rats of a body weight between 340–370 g.

Notes: The influence of some environmental factors and some protecting substances were tested in a laboratory trial with healthy coronary horn and compared with specimens of damaged horn from the bearing border, which had been submitted to a faeces-urine medium. Hoof horn of the best quality from the middle zone of coronary horn (3–4 cm distal of the coronary band) was submitted to different organic media or to some hoof horn varnishes or to heat. The horn specimens of defined size were treated for 36 days with urine, faeces and urine, urea, faeces or faeces and biotine and their strength was compared with untreated controls. The mentioned excrements were collected from horses. The second group comprised some hoof varnishes or hoof-conditioners (Horsepan, Isohoof Protect, Krealit, Pedalo) and were kept for 24 h in these media. The influence of heat was tested after the horn specimens were heated in an oven for 5 min to 125°C. The results of histologically unchanged horn were compared to horn specimens of the bearing border, where frequently histological changes such as microcracks occur. Two groups of 20 specimens from the bearing border were treated with a mixture of faeces and urine for 5 weeks, and their tensile strength was compared to the same number of untreated controls. The tensile strength of unchanged coronary horn remained nearly unchanged or was only slightly diminished when it was treated with the different media. The treatment with heat did not reduce the tensile strength or showed even a slight increase compared to untreated specimens. The tensile strength of bearing border specimens showed a highly significant decrease of tensile strength of about 55% after 5 weeks treatment with faeces-urine in both trials compared to the untreated controls. The results indicate that unchanged horn is much more resistant to environmental factors than bearing border horn with first damages. For prevention of severe changes at the bearing border horses should not stand for a long time in beddings with a high content of faeces and urine.

Notes: The unaltered epidermis of the hoof of 21 Landrace pigs of different ages was examined histochemically for substances which could be important for normal keratinization, quality of horn or in pathological processes. These were PAS-positive substances, SH- and SS-groups, lipids, calcium and phosphate as well as the enzymes lactate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase, ATP-ase, alkaline and acid phosphatase, beta-glucuronidase and non-specific esterase. The histochemical results can be very different in various pans of the hoof. The medullary spaces of the horn tubules in the stratum corneum contain carbohydrates as well as hydrolytic enzymes such as acid phosphatase, beta-glucuronidase and non-specific esterase. These enzymes and the carbohydrates may increase in pathological processes.
