    Notes: Since dissipation requires motion, the velocity-independent friction of macroscopic systems must result from quick motions of some of its components. A model of coupled spins, some of which have irregular anisotropy directions, presents velocity independent loss. During a collective motion of the spin ensemble, an irregular spin can fall into its potential minimum, from which it is subsequently dragged out again. The effect is pronounced for a range of the ratio between the anisotropy and interatomic exchange coupling constants which is typical for rare-earth ions.

    Notes: For the coupling of two ferromagnets separated by a nonmagnetic layer, the Ruderman–Kittel [C. Kittel, Quantum Theory of Solids (Wiley, New York, 1963)] theory gives an expression which oscillates as a function of the thickness of the laser and asymptotically decreases as the reciprocal square of the thickness. The prefactor is independent of the electron density.

    Notes: The photoluminescence characteristics of undoped and TbCl3-doped zinc oxide films deposited by the spray pyrolysis technique are reported. Undoped films present the characteristic blue-green emission peak at ∼508 nm observed in single-crystal and powder ZnO. The TbCl3-doped films present a luminescence peak at ∼540 nm. The light emission of the doped films decreases with time of exposure of the sample to the excitation light. The phenomenon is interpreted in terms of a simple model in which a competitive process of hole trapping and phototrapping occurs at a radiative recombination center generated by the TbCl3.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L’èquation du potentiel image quasistatique, induit par une charge dans un milieu semiinfini, est déduite pour une fonction diélectrique dépendant du vecteur d’onde et de la fréquence. L’équation est résolue de façon exacte sous l’hypothèse que la fonction diélectrique est locale dans la direction perdendiculaire à la surface. Cette solution est appliquée aux cas d’un metal, d’un semiconducteur et d’un isolateur; l’effet Schottky est discuté.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Für das quasistatische Bildpotential, induziert durch eine Ladung in einem Halbraum mit wellenlängen- und frequenzabhängiger Dielektrizitätsfunktion, wird eine Integralgleichung hergeleitet. Diese läßt sich exakt lösen unter der Annahme, daß die Dielektrizitätsfunktion lokal ist in Richtung senkrecht zur Oberfläche. Diese Lösung wird auf den Fall eines Metalles, Halbleiters und Isolators angewendet; der Schottky Effekt wird beschrieben.
    Notes: Abstract The equation for the quasistatic image potential induced by a charge is derived for a semiinfinite medium with wavevector and frequency dependent dielectric function. The equation is solved exactly for a dielectric function which is local in the direction perpendicular to the surface. This result is applied to the case of a metal, semiconductor and insulator; the Schottky effect is discussed.

    Notes: Conclusion We have demonstrated the existence of an anomalous polarization coupling mechanism present in the injection locked TEA CO2 laser. As a direct consequence of this work, a new injection technique has been formulated which permits efficient injection coupling and maximises energy extraction whilst eliminating the detrimental optical feedback effects to which other injection locking systems are prone.

La diffusion des électrons est traitée dans l'approximation de Born, à l'aide du facteur de structure dynamique de Van Hove, facteur empirique, et d'un pseudo-potentiel écranté pour les ions. Aux basses fréquences (ħΩ ℰF=énergie de Fermi), le résultat correspond à la formule classique de Drude, pour autant que l'on définisse un nombre effectif d'electrons par ion; dans le domaineħΩ∼ℰF, par contre, la forme des résultats obtenus est différente.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die Dielektrizitätskonstante eines flüssigen Metalles wird für den Frequenzbereichω P Ω≫ξ 0 undΩ ξ 0, woξ 0 die Relaxationsfrequenz des statischen Widerstandes undω P die Plasmafrequenz bedeutet, mit Hilfe der thermischen Greenschen Funktionen berechnet. Die Streuung der Elektronen wird in der Bornschen Näherung auf Grund des empirischen dynamischen Strukturfaktors vonVan Hove und eines abgeschirmten Pseudopotentials der Ionen behandelt. Bei tiefen Frequenzen (ħΩ ℰF=Fermienergie) entspricht das Resultat der klassischen Formel von Drude, wobei eine effektive Elektronenzahl eingeführt wird. Im BereichħΩ∼ℰF treten weitere Abweichungen auf.
    Notes: Abstract The dielectric constant of a liquid metal is calculated with the temperature Green's functions technique in the frequency rangeω P Ω≫ξ 0 andΩ ξ 0, whereξ 0 is the resistivity relaxation frequency, andω P the plasma frequency. The electron scattering is described in the Born approximation using the empirical dynamical structure factor ofVan Hove and a screened electron-ion pseudopotential. At low frequencies (ħΩ ℰF=Fermi energy) the result can be identified with Drude's classical formula introducing an effective number of electrons per ion. ForħΩ∼ℰF, however, the result differs in form.
