Notizen: The initial interface and silicide formation induced by Mg adsorption on the Si(111)7×7 surface have been studied using low-energy electron diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy. At room temperature, it is found that Mg atoms are preferably adsorbed on top sites of Si adatoms and rest atoms on the Si(111)7×7 surface and with increasing of Mg deposition, a Mg2Si epitaxial layer is formed and the surface structure transforms from the diffuse (1×1) phase into the (2/3(square root of)3×2/3(square root of)3)R30°. After growing up to a critical thickness, the Mg film grew in a disordered phase on the epitaxial layer. The Fermi level of the Mg2Si film is positioned at 0.51±0.05 eV above the valence band maximum. On the other hand, at 300 °C the Mg2Si epitaxial layer was formed in the (1×1) phase on the Si(111)7×7 and grew up to a critical thickness in the initial stage. For the successive evaporation, the Mg film grew in a disordered phase on the Mg2Si(111)1×1 surface. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of plasma-spray-deposited monolithic coatings, as well as multilayer coatings that consisted of Al2O3 and ZrO2 that was stabilized by 8% Y2O3 (YSZ), was investigated. The coatings exhibited a large reduction in thermal conductivity at all temperatures, when compared to the bulk monolithic Al2O3 and YSZ. This reduction was due to porosity as well as thermal resistance that was caused by interfaces in the coatings. The largest decrease in the thermal conductivity of the coatings, relative to monolithic fully dense materials, was due to splat interfaces within each layer, as well as the coating/substrate interface. On the other hand, the multilayer coatings showed little variation in the thermal conductivity, relative to the number of layers, which suggests that the influence of interlayer interfaces on heat transfer is relatively small. A one-dimensional analysis of steady-state heat transfer has been presented to illustrate the significance of porosity, splat interfaces, and interlayer interfaces, with respect to the overall thermal conductivity of multilayer coatings.

Notizen: The fatigue behaviour of base metal and weld joints of 1Cr–18Ni–9Ti stainless steel has been studied under uniaxial, torsional and 90° out-of-phase loading. A significant degree of additional hardening is found for both base metal and weld metal under 90° out-of-phase loading. Both base metal and weld metal have the same cyclic stable stress–strain relationship under torsional cyclic loading and 90° out-of-phase cyclic loading. Base metal exhibits higher cyclic stress than weld metal under uniaxial loading, and Young's modulus and yield stress of weld metal are smaller than those of base metal. Weld metal exhibited lower fatigue resistance than base metal under uniaxial and torsional loading, but no significant difference was found between the two materials under 90° out-of-phase loading. A large scatter of fatigue life is observed for weld metal, perhaps because of heterogeneity of the microstructure. The Wang–Brown (WB) damage parameter and the Fatemi–Socie (FS) damage parameter, both based on the shear critical plane approach, were evaluated relative to the fatigue data obtained.

Notizen: Localized heating was imposed on a 6061-T6 aluminum alloy plate to cause thermal strains, and simultaneously interplanar spacing changes were measured using in-situ time-resolved neutrondiffraction techniques. Two different methods were used: 1) direct real-time measurements of thetransient behavior and 2) a series of measurements based on the quasi-steady state (QSS) principle.A comparison of the two results shows that the QSS method can represent the transient behaviorunder the current experimental conditions

Notizen: Abstract Autoantibody against erythrocytes has occasionally been observed in patients with de novo acute myelocytic leukemia (AML). However, it is not clear whether this autoantibody in AML patients induces frank hemolysis (autoimmune hemolytic anemia, AIHA), as seen in lymphoid neoplasms. We present two de novo AML patients who showed hemolysis due to antiglobulin test-positive and test-negative AIHA, respectively. AIHA should be considered as one cause of anemia in de novo AML patients, and blood transfusions should be given carefully in such cases to avoid harmful hemolysis.

Notizen: Abstract A soluble fraction of coal tar pitch (CP) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) was reacted with p-benzoquinone (BQ) at 160 and 180°C and followed by carbonization and graphitization. The reaction and carbonization behavior were monitored in-situ by using differential scanning calorimeter, high-temperature 1H NMR and high-temperature ESR. The reactions of CP and BQ resulted in an increase in molecular weight with an increase in BQ concentration. Such molecular weight increases led to the formation of a less ordered structure due to the reduced mobility of the molecules. The relative order of the carbonized materials was determined by using polarized light microscope and X-ray diffraction. The molecular size of the precursor was recognized as an important factor in determining the morphology of carbon materials.

Notizen: Abstract Understanding the kinematics of human movement is of both a basis and an applied value in medicine and biology. Motion measurement can be used to evaluate functional performance of limbs under normal and abnormal conditions. Kinematic knowledge is also essential for proper diagnosis and surgical treatment of joint disease and the design of prosthetic devices to restore function. In general, kinematic analysis of human movement can be categorized into two main areas: 1) Gross movement of the limb segments interconnected by joints, where the relative three-dimensional joint rotation is described by adopting the Eulerian angle system. With proper selection of axes of rotation between two bone segments, the associated finite rotation is sequence independent. This concept is particularly useful, since it matches precisely the clinical definition of joint motion. 2) Detailed analysis of joint articulating surface motion, where generalized three-dimensional, unconstrained rotation and translation are described utilizing the concept of the screw displacement axis. Knowing the surface geometry and soft-tissue constraints, the movement of an articulating joint can be analyzed to provide basic information for lubrication and wear studies. In addition, with appropriate numerical differentiation, velocity and acceleration can be obtained from the displacement information described by the above two methods. Currently available measurement techniques of human movement can be classified into three categories: 1) electrical linkage methods; 2) stereometric methods and biplanar roentgenographic methods; and 3) accelerometric methods. Each system has its unique advantages and limitations in terms of the operational principle, instruments required, data reduction, and type of information produced. Representative analyses of human upper and lower extremity movement will be included as illustrative examples.
