Notizen: Angular spontaneous emission rates and lifetimes of Er3+ in Si/SiO2 microcavities are calculated for cavity lengths close to full and half-wavelengths. For a half-wavelength cavity, the calculations show that the spontaneous lifetime is sensitive to the variation of cavity length, and agrees very well with the experimental data measured by Vredenberg, Hunt, Schubert, Jacobson, Poate, and Zydzik [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 517 (1993)]. This variation comes from a coupling rate change into the cavity normal. For a full wavelength cavity, the lifetime is less sensitive to cavity length due to strong coupling of spontaneous emission to a fundamental waveguide mode.

Notizen: Experimental data are presented along with calculations which describe the near-threshold transverse modes in AlAs/GaAs/InGaAs vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with two different Bragg reflector systems. The Bragg reflector systems are composed of either AlAs/GaAs quarter-wave stacks or a combination of AlAs/GaAs and ZnSe/CaF. The temperature dependence of the lasing mode is studied for three different structures, and it is shown that higher-order lasing modes are favored with strong cavity detuning when the cavity resonance exists at a wavelength greater than the bulk emission peak. Important aspects of the lasing behavior are described by calculating the spontaneous mode which occurs at the lasing wavelength. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Spinodal decomposition in multicomponent mixtures of two homopolymers and a block copolymer was studied by a combination of neutron and light scattering experiments. Mixtures of nearly monodisperse polyolefins—polymethylbutylene (Mw=1.7×105 gm/mol), polyethylbutylene (Mw=2.2×105 gm/mol), and a symmetric polymethylbutylene-block-polyethylbutylene (Mw=4.6×104 gm/mol) were studied, following relatively deep quenches into the spinodal region −χ/χs ranged from 1.7 to 2.4 (χ is the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter at the experimental temperature and χs is the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter at the spinodal temperature). The ratio of homopolymer volume fractions was kept constant at unity, and the block copolymer volume fraction was varied from 0.0 to 0.2. The evolution of structure was followed over five decades of real time—1 min to 1 month. During this time, the characteristic length scale of the phase separated structure increased from 10−1 to 10 μm. The early stages of spinodal decomposition, captured by time-resolved neutron scattering, were compared with theoretical predictions based on the random phase approximation (RPA). Qualitative agreement was obtained. The intermediate and late stages, studied by light scattering, followed classic signatures of binary spinodal decomposition. Experimental evidence indicates that the block copolymer is uniformly distributed throughout the sample during all stages of the decomposition. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Thermodynamic interactions in mixtures of two homopolymers and a block copolymer were obtained from small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. Experimental SANS profiles from homogeneous, ternary mixtures of model polyolefins—poly(ethyl butylene)/poly(methyl butylene)/poly(methyl butylene)-b-poly(ethyl butylene)—were compared with theoretical predictions based on the multicomponent random phase approximation (RPA). The polymers were nearly monodisperse and were synthesized by saturating the double bonds in anionically synthesized polydienes with H2 and D2, thus yielding polyolefins with neutron scattering contrast. The theoretical scattering profiles depend on 16 structural parameters and six Flory–Huggins interaction parameters χ, all of which were obtained independently. The χ parameters were obtained from SANS measurements on binary poly(ethyl butylene)/poly(methyl butylene) blends. The SANS profiles obtained from the ternary blends were in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions over the observable q range (0.01–0.08 A(ring)−1) and over a wide range of block copolymer concentrations (from 10 to 80 vol. % copolymer). This suggests that the measured χ parameters are consistent with the original ideas of Flory and Huggins that χ is a measure of monomer–monomer interactions, and is thus independent of block copolymer concentration. Partial structure factors, related to correlations in the concentration of individual components, were examined by selective labeling and were also found to be in quantitative agreement with the predictions of the multicomponent RPA.

Notizen: Mode interactions in the gyrotron traveling wave tube amplifier (gyro-TWT) are examined with particle simulations and compared with experimental observations. Studies focus on the competition between the absolute and convective instabilities. Detailed diagnostics on mode structures, field growth profiles, and evolution of electron distribution in momentum and energy spaces allow an in depth look at the basic physical processes, such as the mechanism of mode competition and suppression. Mutual verifications between the theory and experiment have strengthened understanding of the multimode behavior and added to the predictability of high-power gyro-TWT's.

Notizen: We demonstrate a wavelength monitor and a two-wavelength detector based on two single-quantum-well absorbers that sample a standing wave created by a distributed Bragg reflector. As a wavelength monitor, our device is power independent over a 15 dB range. Wavelength discrimination is linear over a 12 nm range. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Data is presented on the characteristics of light emitted from localized dipoles contained in Fabry–Perot cavities. The cavities consist of AlGaAs semiconductor with the dipole localization achieved using GaAs quantum wells. Experimental data shows that the standard assumption of the spectral width of a cavity mode as having some fixed relationship to the photon lifetime in the cavity is an approximation which only becomes valid for dipoles throughout the cavity. Also, intensity differences are measured out either side of a cavity even when symmetrical mirrors are used. The intensity difference depends on the precise dipole position. Both the spectral and intensity differences can be derived from theory using a model which accounts for interference between coherent spontaneous wavepackets emitted in opposite directions from individual emission events.
