Notizen: Wide optical gap (2.0 eV) boron-doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide films were prepared by the plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique from a SiH4+CH4+BF3+H2 gas mixture for the first time. The film showed a photoconductivity of 1×10−5 S/cm under 1 sun illumination, which was higher by a factor of 5 than the films doped with B2H6.

Notizen: Highly photoconductive hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) films were prepared by alternating monolayer deposition and hydrogen passivation by the plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique with a multiplasma-zone apparatus. With this apparatus, the hydrogen-coverage factor of the growing film surface was increased by the hydrogen plasma in the H-passivation zone. The a-SiC:H films grown by repeating deposition of the 3-A(ring)-thick layer on the hydrogen-covered surface showed lower densities of spin and tail states than those of continuously deposited films. Infrared spectra showed that absorption intensities of the carbon polyhydride modes (2890 and 2940 cm−1) decreased and those of the silicon monohydride mode (2000 cm−1) increased with decreasing stacking layer thickness, which suggested formation of a dense network structure. The hydrogen-coverage factor of the growing film surface was estimated from the dependence of carbon content in the film on the hydrogen-passivation time and the stacking layer thickness. Under optimized conditions, the film with a photoconductivity of 3×10−5 S/cm and an optical gap of 1.91 eV was prepared.

Notizen: The subgap absorption spectra for hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide/silicon (a-Si1−x Cx :H/a-Si:H) and silicon nitride/silicon (a-SiN:H/a-Si:H) alternatively multilayered films were measured by photothermal deflection spectroscopy and the defect density at the heterojunction was evaluated from the increase in absorption shoulder with the number of layering periods. The defect density at the a-Si0.66 C0.34 :H/a-Si:H heterojunction increased with increasing a-SiC:H layer thickness, while that at the a-Si0.50N0.50@B:H/a-Si@B:H heterojunction showed no dependence on the a-SiN:H layer thickness and was 1.4×1011 cm−2 . The defect density at the a-Si1−x Cx :H/a-Si:H heterojunction increased to 1×1011 cm−2 with increasing carbon content in the 0.1–0.5 range. Hydrogen dilution of the starting gases of the a-SiC:H layer was effective to decrease the interface defect density to less than 2×1010 cm−2 . A graded composition layer at the a-SiC:H/a-Si:H interface did not decrease the defect density.

Notizen: A B-cell subset with Fc receptors for IgA (Bα cells) has been observed in human peripheral blood. To investigate aberrations of B cells in a diseased state, the percentages of Bα cells were enumerated in peripheral blood from patients with IgA nephropathy, which is characterized by preponderant deposition of IgA-dominant immune complexes in the glomerular mesangial area. The present study showed a significant increase in Bα cells in peripheral blood from patients with IgA nephropathy but not in those with chronic proliferative glomerulo-nephritis without mesangial IgA deposition. Most FcαR-bearing cells were observed in surface IgA bearing lymphocytes. No linear correlation was observed between the levels of serum IgA and the percentages of Bα cells. The addition of aggregated IgA to cultures did not induce FcαR-bearing B cells in vitro. It is postulated that Bα cells might have some pathogenetic role in the development of IgA nephropathy and that some antigenic stimuli might play a role in the increase of peripheral blood Bα cells in patients with IgA nephropathy.

Notizen: The objective of this study was to compare a nonaugmented autogenous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft with an autogenous graft augmented with Leeds-Keio polyester mesh (L-K mesh) when the augmentation was fixed to bone at both ends or fixed to bone at one end. Twenty-six rabbits were divided into 3 groups (nonaugmented, augmented with one-end fixation and augmented with two-end fixation), and were evaluated 12 weeks postoperatively. The gross findings demonstrated adhesion of the proliferated infrapatellar fat pad to the reconstructed ACL in the autogenous group, but not in the augmentation groups. The microangiographic study revealed poor revascularization in the augmentation groups. Histologically, in the L-K two-end fixation group, the biological segment of the reconstructed ACL remained necrotic. The biomechanical study showed that the augmentation groups were significantly stiffer and stronger than the nonaugmented graft

Notizen: Dark current-voltage (J-V) characteristics of p-i-n a-Si solar cells are studied to clarify the effect of the p/i interface layer on the open-circuit voltage (Voc). It is shown that the recombination current in the p/i interface region is predominant in the a-Si solar cells with an i-layer thickness of less than 200 nm and has a great effect on the dark-current transport in the solar cells. It is also shown that the current transport of the cells with the p/i interface layer of constant band gap of a thickness of more than 14 nm is effectively the same as that of a cell in which the band gap of the whole i layer is equal to that of the interface layer. A model in which the dark current of the cell consists of the recombination current at the p/i interface and the recombination current in the bulk region of the i layer is proposed. Using this model, the Voc degradation for the a-Si solar cells with the p/i interface layer is shown to be due to the defects generated in the i layer.

Notizen: Light and electron microscopic studies and energy dispersive X-ray analysis disclosed that the essential cause of gingival discoloration following the placement of a metallic crown, was marked deposition of melanin pigment. Deposition of melanin pigment was observed in epithelial cells, on basement membranes, and in fibroblasts, macrophages and among intercellular ground substance of the proprial layer. Brown or dark brown colored granules were observed in the deep portion of the proprial layer. Some metallic elements as silver and sulfur were detected. It was presumed that these materials were dental metals accidentally implanted in gingival tissues during the therapeutic procedure. The deposition of melanin pigment closely corresponded with mucosal tissue where these materials were present in the deep portion of the proprial layer. These findings suggested that these materials influenced the physiological metabolism of melanin and induced its pathological deposition in the proprial tissue.

Notizen: A case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the left palatal tonsil in a 51-year-old woman is reported. The histological features of the tumor are typical, except for the appearance of crystal inclusions in plasma cells, histiocytes and matrices. The developmental process and the nature of the crystal inclusions are discussed, based on electron-microscopic findings. The patient has been followed for one year post-operatively, and no clinical evidence of recurrence has been observed.

Notizen: Objectives:  This study examined the in situ expression of receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (RANK), osteoprotegerin, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) in the osteoclasts of rat periodontal tissue. Background:  In periodontal disease, osteoclasts cause resorption of the alveolar bone. The function of osteoclasts is regulated by interaction with periodontal ligament cells (PDLs). Furthermore, various kinds of molecules such as RANKL, RANK, osteoprotegerin, IL-1β and TNFα are known to be related to the osteoclasts differentiation and function. It is therefore important to observe the expression of RANKL, RANK, osteoprotegerin and cytokines in osteoclasts and PDLs.Methods:  Four-week-old Wistar rats were used. Tooth movement was performed by the Waldo method, and the pathological bone resorption was induced. The demineralized maxillae and mandiblae were embedded with paraffin. In situ hybridization was performed to detect RANKL, RANK, osteoprotegerin, IL-1β, and TNFα mRNAs in osteoclasts and other cells using the specific RNA probes, respectively. Results:  Both RANKL and RANK were concomitantly expressed in some osteoclasts. RANKL was also positive in osteoblasts and PDLs. No IL-1β- and TNFα-positive osteoclast was noted. The positive signals of osteoprotegerin were detected in almost all osteoblasts, PDLs and odontoblasts. No osteoprotegerin-positive osteoclasts were observed. The number and the distribution pattern of RANKL- and RANK-expressing osteoclasts changed when orthodontic excessive force was applied to periodontal tissue. In addition, IL-1β and TNFα were shown to be expressed in osteoclasts under pathological status. Conclusion:  These findings suggest that an autocrine mechanism of RANKL–RANK exists in osteoclast, which is heightened in the pathological conditions. Furthermore, the autocrine mechanism of IL-1β and TNFα is also provided in osteoclast under pathological condition. These autocrine mechanisms therefore seem to regulate the osteoclast function in both physiological and pathological conditions.

Notizen: Two cases of oral B-lymphomas with numerous Russell body-like inclusions arc described. One occurred primarily in the hard palate of a 59-year-old female with Sjogren's syndrome, and was diagnosed as lymphoplasmacytoid immunoeytoma by Kiel's classification. The other occurred secondarily in the buccal mucosa of a 44-year-old female whose first affected site was orbital soft tissues, and was diagnosed as extramedullary plasmacytoma. The diagnostic problems and the nature of the Russell body-like inclusions are discussed based on the immunoperoxidase (PAP) method and electron microscopic study. The first patient is well without recurrence 19 months after surgery, while the second patient developed extra-medullary plasmacytoma in the abdomen 5 months after surgery for the buccal plasmacytoma.
