    Notizen: Abstract The optogalvanic technique combined with the excitation by means of a single-frequency dye laser has been used to investigate the nonlinear Hanle effect on a variety of atomic transitions involving various quantum numbers and selection rules. A rate equation model has been successfully applied to provide a quantitative analysis of the observed signals. Saturation and pressure broadening parameters are reported for Ne transitions at 607.4 and 603.0 nm and Ca transitions at 610.2 and 585.7 nm

    Notizen: Abstract An ir CO2, dc current pumped, optical waveguide (WG) amplifier has been built, and its active medium optical parameters measured for several CO2 emission lines, and their dependence from active medium total pressure, discharge current and temperature was investigated. High gain is found which, coupled with relatively high saturation power in the WG fundamental mode and ease of fabrication with this technology in long (up to 1.5 m) lengths, indicates promising use to efficiently amplify high spectral and spatial purity output of a short, highly tunable WG laser up to power levels suited for nonlinear spectroscopy and optical pumping. The dependence of the small signal gain coefficient and of the saturation parameter for individual rotational lines on the radiation intensity was computed using experimentally known parameters of the discharge plasma. The computation was carried out using the two mode rate equation approach for CO2−N2−He gas mixtures. A satisfactory agreement between theoretical and experimental results was obtained.

    Notizen: Abstract In this work we report new FIR laser lines from CD3OD optically pumped by a CO2 waveguide laser. The wide tunability of this laser (290 MHz) makes it possible to pump absorption lines with large frequency offset relative to the CO2 laser line center, which are not possible by using conventional CO2 lasers. As a consequence 19 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 38.0 μm to 455.2 μm in wavelength. For all lines, precise frequency offset measurements between the CO2 line center and the center of the absorber CD3OD line were performed using the transferred Lamb-dip technique. We also present direct Doppler-free offset measurements of infrared absorption, obtained within the FIR laser cavity itself, using optoacoustic detection.

    Notizen: Summary Commercial diode lasers have emission wavelengths which overlap some absorption xenon lines. We have performed saturation spectroscopy of four lines, leaving from the first excited atomic configuration 5p 56s, at 823.16 nm, at 828.01 nm, at 834.68 nm and at 820.63 nm, in a weak glow discharge of natural xenon. Natural xenon is a mixture of several isotopes, and the two even isotopes, Xe(129) (26% of relative abundance) and Xe(131) (21%), have a nuclear spin (1/2 and 3/2, respectively) that produces a hyperfine structure. The complex resulting spectra have been resolved and the results are compared with the available literature data.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Riassunto Si riportano i criteri costruttivi e le prestazioni di un tubo di scarica a catodo cavo da utilizzarsi in spettroscopia laser ad alta risoluzione. L'apparato è di semplice costruzione e rapidamente adattabile alle diverse esigenze. Sono quindi illustrate misure di spettroscopia optogalvanica senza effetto Doppler e si ottengono righe in larghezza omogenea per elementi anche refrattari ed altamente reattivi.
    Kurzfassung: Резюме Приводятся конструкционные критерии и характеристики полой катодной трубки, разработанной специально для лазерной спектроскопии высокого разрешения. Аппарат прост по конструкции и легко демонтируется. Иллюстрируются измерения оптогальванической спектроскопиии без эффекта Доплера. Получаются узкие однородные ширины линий для огнеупорных и высокореактивных элементов.
    Notizen: Summary We report the design criteria and performance characteristics of a hollow-cathode tube developed especially for high-resolution Doppler-free laser spectroscopy. It is simple to construct and is easily demountable. Narrow homogeneous line widths of refractory and highly reactive-element transitions have been observed by applying intermodulated detection scheme.

    Notizen: Summary The excitation of metastable states in an atomic beam apparatus by means of electron collision is a widespread technique. We have observed a large bistable behaviour in our apparatus designed to provide an intense and collimated beam of metastable helium by excitation with orthogonally impinging electrons. This bistable behaviour largely affects the efficiency of the apparatus and is therefore worth of being carefully investigated. The apparatus has an electrode configuration equivalent to that of a tetrode valve with large intergrid distances. The bistability consists in a hysteresis cycle in the curve of the anode currentvs. grid voltage. Experimental measurements, supported by a simple theoretical model and by numerical simulation, stress out the crucial role played by space charge effects for the onset of bistability. A comparison with previous observation of this phenomenon is given. Spontaneous current oscillations with various shapes have been recorded in one of the two curves of the hysteresis cycle.

    Notizen: Summary The influence of a static magnetic field orthogonal to the axis of an argon laser discharge is investigated. The enhancement of the small-signal gain at 488 nm is measured as a function of the magnetic field at different values of the parameters of the discharge. The data about the gain compared with the measurement of the fluorescence from the upper level of the 488 nm line give information about the excitation mechanisms. A strong enhancement of the ionization rate of Ar+ is detected.
