    Notizen: This study examines variations in pretreatment arrest patterns of clients admitted to federally funded drug treatment programs. Data from published annual reports of the Client Oriented Data Acquisition Process (CODAP)-the nationol monitoring system of drug abuse treatment-are used. Variations based on sex and age are found, but not for race. The type of drug abuse was associated with differential arrest patterns. The results suggested that cocaine and hallucinogen users were more likely to have been arrested of the ten categories of drug users considered

    Notizen: TPA, a tumor promoter whose initial site of action is the cell membrane, was examined for its actions on hamster oral mucosa using light and scanning electron-microscopic procedures. Hamster check-pouch explants were cultured in vitro, then treated for 72 h with 1.6 × 10−8 M TPA. Treated cultures showed a higher mitotic index and more extensive growth than control cultures. Epithelial cells in the control cultures appeared polygonal, with thin, small to medium microvilli. The cells in the treated cultures showed variable shape and surface morphology. Some were interconnected by broad cytoplasmic extensions while others demonstrated long, thin processes that traversed great distances. The unusual surface morphology may be a manifestation of altered phospholipid metabolism that produces a more “fluid” cytoplasmic membrane.

    Notizen: Epithelial outgrowths from hamster cheek pouch explants were cultured for 14 days in media containing calcium concentrations of 0.05 mM, 0.075 mM, 0.1 mM, 0.25 mM, 0.75 mM or 1.45 mM (control). Compared with controls, the cultures grown at lower calcium concentrations (0.25–0.75 mM), exhibited higher mitotic indices and an increase in outgrowth size. The mitotic index of cultures at 0.25 mM calcium concentration was 30 ± 2.26, compared to 24 ± 2.24 for controls. Increase in size of the outgrowths was also observed at 0.25 mM calcium concentration compared with those grown in control medium. The epithelial outgrowths grown in control media exhibited cell stratification not observed at lower calcium concentrations. These studies indicate that lower calcium concentration in the media (0.25–0.75 mM) increased epithelial cell proliferation and inhibited keratinization.

    Notizen: As a part of an ongoing larger study concerned with nurse manpower planning, an attempt has been made to investigate the reasons for the non-participation in the labour force of such a large proportion of qualified nurses. In an attempt to collect information on this topic a questionnaire was developed and distributed to a sample of nurses. The article describes in some detail the two different ways in which the names and addresses of the sample were generated. The first method involved making contact by the simple expedient of dropping leaflets through letterboxes while the second involved tracing respondents through their last known address when they originally qualified. The success of these two approaches is contrasted which should be of value to anyone contemplating a similar name-capturing exercise. A total of 2325 questionnaires were returned and computer analysed. This article presents the results of one part of that analysis i.e. the factor analysis conducted on the attitudinal questions contained in the document. A five-factor solution yielded highly interpretable results and the factor loadings are presented along with the pattern of responses. The factor scores are then contrasted for three different groups of respondents: the grouping being based on whether the respondent was working full-time, part-time or not at all.

    Notizen: As part of a wider study concerned with the changing nurse employment patterns a detailed questionnaire was completed by a total of 2325 qualified female nurses, 841 of whom were working fulltime in nursing, 634 were inactive, 678 were offering their services on a part-time basis and 172 were working in some other occupation. In a previous article the results of the analysis conducted on the responses to the attitude questions were presented. In this paper the replies to those questions aimed at soliciting the reasons felt to have impacted on the respondent's decision to take up nursing, to stay or to leave the profession and to re-enter the profession are analysed. As the questionnaires were distributed in the course of two projects separated by 4 years, what is of particular interest is the similarity of the two sets of results. These indicate that there is still a very high level of job satisfaction as evidenced by the extent to which nursing would be recommended to a friend or relative. The primary obvious reason for inactivity is the existence of a young child but when further intentions are explored it is clear that there is a large pool of qualified nurses keen to resume a career the main obstacle being the lack of sufficient flexibility of hours of working.

    Notizen: High-resolution diffuse X-ray scattering (DXS) measurements have been made on dislocation-free silicon single crystals of the following types: (1) as-grown specimen with no heat treatment (labelled as NHT); (2) specimen heated at 1273 K under oxygen for 10 h [labelled as HT(1)] and (3) specimen heated at 1273 K under oxygen for 50 h [labelled as HT(2)]. Reciprocal space around the 111 reciprocal-lattice point in (1,-1,1) geometry has been explored using a Cu Kα exploring beam. From the distribution of DXS intensity it was found that for sample NHT, the observed DXS is predominantly due to aggregates of vacancies. Heating the specimen under oxygen produces defect aggregates of interstitial type. Infrared absorption measurements showed that the area under the 9 μm absorption band decreases, suggesting that oxygen ions aggregate into clusters of interstitial type. Transmission X-ray topographs also support these results.

    Notizen: Abstract The structure of94Ru is investigated through the beta decay of two isomers of94Rh, and whose half-lives are measured to be 25.8±0.2 s and 70.6±0.6 s respectively. The decay properties are studied by means of beta and gamma spectroscopy techniques. The level structure of94Ru populated in the decays of both isomers is proposed with deducedJ π values. Theβ-decay energy for71-s 94Rh is measured to be 10.0±0.4 MeV. The structure is discussed in terms of shell model.
