Notizen: Abstract Nine cytoplasmic male-sterile lines and five restorer lines were used in an incomplete diallel cross to analyze seed effects, cytoplasmic effects, and maternal gene effects on nutrient quality traits of indica rice (Oryza sauva L.). The results indicated that nutrient quality traits were controlled by cytoplasmic and maternal effects as well as by seed direct effects. Maternal effects for lysine content (LC), lysine index (LI), and the ratio of lysine content to protein content (RLP) were more important than seed direct effects, while protein content (PC) and protein index (PI) were mainly affected by seed direct effects. Cytoplasmic effects accounted for 2.41–20.80% of the total genetic variation and were significant for all nutrient quality traits. Additive genetic effects were much more important than dominance effects for all of the traits studied, so that selection could be applied for these traits in early generations.

Notizen: Fluorescence of several new polyimides in which neighboring imides are linked by a N-N bond was examined in chloroform solutions. For the naphthalene-containing polyimide 1, analysis of the emission, excitation, and absorption spectra at different concentrations showed the existence of a ground-state intermolecular charge transfer (CT) complex due to chain association and aggregation. For the perylene-containing polyimides 3-6, the fluorescence was characterized by a low energy band superimposed on the normal perylenediimide bands. This was interpreted as arising from a CT interaction between electron donor-acceptor pairs on the polymers backbone of the same chain, revealing certain degrees of chain coiling of these polymers in solution. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: In a swelling state at a temperature of incipient dissolution, an acrylic fiber is highly elastic just like a rubber. A system of entangled macromolecular chains is considered analogous to a cross-linked rubber network and from the theory of rubber elasticity, the measured extension modulus of an acrylic fiber at the terminal swelling state may be used to calculate the number of entanglements. By means of a capillary rheometer, a series of model acrylic fibers with varied degrees of entanglements were prepared. The entanglements present in these model fibers were then measured by the other two thermal methods (SDSC and SSS/SS methods) already established in our laboratory. The die swell ratios were also measured microscopically at the exit of the capillary rheometer. The experimental results of entanglements measured by the various methods were well correlated, at least qualitatively. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
