Notizen: A bipolar, high-current (10 000 A) pulse generator, used to magnetically saturate thin films during spin-polarized electron and dynamic response measurements, is described. Bipolar operation is achieved by discharging a bank of capacitors through selected pairs of high-power silicon-controlled rectifiers connected to a coil in an H bridge configuration. The pulse generator can be controlled either manually or by means of a computer. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A modified Rice University-type compact Mott spin polarimeter operating at 20 kV is adapted to a large commerical hemispherical electron energy analyzer. Normal energy analyzer functions are preserved via a retractable channeltron in the polarimeter acceleration column. In the spin-detection mode, the polarimeter permits analysis of two orthogonal transverse spin-polarization components. Electron trajectory analysis is used to optimize polarimeter lens column voltages in both normal and spin-detection modes. Performance levels are established by experiments and significantly improved spin-detection efficiency is shown to be accessible by changes in the polarimeter collection solid angle.

Notizen: Magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements of ultrathin p(1×1) Fe films on graded-step-density W(100) are used to study step-induced magnetic anisotropy. Spot-profile-analysis low-energy-electron diffraction is used to characterize the stepped W(100) surface prior to film growth and the epitaxial Fe layer after vapor deposition. The experimental results are qualitatively compatible with prior experiments and with theoretical predictions based on the Néel model and on a one-dimensional micromagnetic model proposed by Hyman, Zangwell, and Stiles (HZS). The observed evolution of hysteresis loop shape as a function of step density and anisotropy strength (which was varied by chemisorption of oxygen) is observed to be consistent with a hysteresis loop phase diagram based on the HZS model. However, the measured variation of switching field versus vicinal angle α for 2 monolayer thick Fe films differs significantly from the quadratic dependence predicted by the Néel model and from the dependence predicted by HZS. The surface-step-induced anisotropy vanishes at high vicinality (α∼10°) and novel two-state switching is observed at specific vicinal angles. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: By growing gadolinium films on W(110), it has been possible to observe the development of the Gd(0001) band structure with increasing film thickness. The changes in the 5d bands as a result of exposure to oxygen or the development of the valence-band structure with increasing film thickness lead to changes in the 5p multiplet oscillator strengths. These changes are a result of the influence of the band structure upon the final-state effects that give rise to such multiplet structures. This study provides conclusive evidence that there is a 5d contribution to the shallow 5p multiplet photoemission core-level structure.

Notizen: The electronic and magnetic properties of thin (one to three monolayer) epitaxial Fe films grown on W(100) are studied using spin-polarized angle-resolved photoemission. Low-energy electron-diffraction studies of a number of samples confirm excellent epitaxy for monolayer films and suggest that two- and three-layer films begin to form strain-relieving dislocations. Submonolayer films manifest no in-plane remanent spin polarization at T=115 K, but effectively quench W(100) surface states and surface resonances. Monolayer and thicker films yield spin-polarized photoelectrons under remanent magnetic conditions. Analysis of spin-polarized electron energy distribution curves (EDCs) corresponding to even-symmetry initial states along the Γ¯-M¯ direction of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone yields a flat majority-spin band at 0.95 eV and an exchange split pair of bands (ΔEexΔEex= 2.15 ± 0.2 eV at Γ¯, 1.2±0.2 eV at M¯) which exhibit significant dispersion. No significant changes in the binding energies of spin-up or -down features in EDCs obtained above the Curie temperature at Γ¯ (normal emission geometry) were detected.

Notizen: Previous magneto-optic Kerr effect studies of ultrathin epitaxial Fe films grown on stepped W(001) surfaces yielded evidence of in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy with magnetization perpendicular to the steps. We report spin-polarized secondary electron emission spectroscopy studies of the same system that confirms this novel micromagnetic phenomena, and provides a more detailed characterization of the zero-field in-plane spin configuration as a function of initial applied field direction.

Notizen: A magneto-optic Kerr effect polarimeter designed to study the dynamics of magnetization reversal in ultrathin films, multilayer films, and microstructures is described. The polarimeter is integrated into a long focal-length charge coupled device (CCD) camera based Kerr microscope that permits viewing domain structures and facilitates positioning of the focused polarimeter beam on microstructures in ultrahigh vacuum. Diffraction-limited spatial resolution, based on the f-number of the respective objective lenses, is achieved by the microscope (∼1 μm) and polarimeter (∼5 μm). The polarimeter is capable of measuring continuous wave or repetitive transient ultrathin film magnetic response at sampling rates of 40 million samples/s (MS/s) over a micron-scale region defined by the illuminating spot. Hysteresis loops generated by ultrathin (monolayer) films and microstructures can be measured at high signal-to-noise ratio over a nine-decade range of drive frequencies. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new low-energy-electron-diffraction (LEED) instrument is described that combines resistive-anode-based position-sensitive detectors with a high-resolution electron gun capable of producing a beam having high spatial coherence (large instrument transfer width). The system produces digitized images of LEED patterns as well as high-resolution spot profiles of individual beams using incident currents in the picoampere range, thus vastly reducing or eliminating electron beam damage to sensitive surfaces. The display resolution of both spot profile and full display images is 1024×1024 channels, and the dynamic range is 16 bits (≈104) per channel. The resistive anode pulse processing electronics limits maximum data acquisition rates to 1×106 s−1. Specially developed software permits manipulation and numerical processing of the digitized two-dimensional images at full resolution to produce spot contour maps, spot line profiles along arbitrary directions, Fourier transforms of spot profiles, integrated spot intensities, and intensity vs voltage curves with suitably subtracted background.

Notizen: The Hg 5d5/2 and 5d3/2 cross sections and branching ratios were measured in the photon energy range between 26 and 105 eV for Hg overlayers on Ag (100) and Cu (100). The branching ratios deviate from the nonrelativistic statistical value of 1.5, reaching values of 8.0. Data are presented that establish a direct relationship between the branching ratio and the long-range crystallographic structure of the Hg overlayers. This relationship is a consequence of the formation of a band structure from the shallow mercury 5d eigenstates.

Notizen: New opportunities for probing magnetism and magnetic materials are emerging as a result of improved electron-spin detectors, broad advances in materials synthesis and characterization techniques, and refinements in spin-sensitive spectroscopic techniques. A multi-investigator group is currently commissioning a spin-polarized photoemission beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source that has been designed to synthesize and study magnetic materials. The beamline exploits the significant increase in synchrotron radiation flux that is emitted from a magnetic insertion device. Key issues and new opportunities for advancing the understanding of magnetism and magnetic materials using this facility are addressed.
