Notizen: Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) has been applied to the investigation of the electronic structure of oligothiophenes with 4–8 thiophene rings. In a series of α-linked oligomers (αn with n being the number of rings), a systematic evolution of the π band is observed. Several peaks which correspond to the π band are observed in the region of 0.7–3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), and the bandwidth becomes broader with increasing n. The nonbonding π band is observed at 3.5 eV below EF and its energy is almost independent of the number of thiophene units. UPS spectra of α7 and α8 are fairly similar to the spectra of polythiophene, showing that these oligomers are good model compounds of the polymer. The ionization threshold energy of α7 and polythiophene was observed to be 5.3 eV. The effect of irregularity on the π-electron system was also studied by using oligomers which contain a β linkage or a vinylene group at the middle of the molecule. The UPS spectra showed that the β linkages significantly affect the electronic structure of polythiophene, while the vinylene group does not. In order to analyze the UPS spectra and to investigate the electronic structures of oligomers, the orbital energies and the geometries of these oligomers are calculated by the semiempirical MNDO-SCF-MO (modified neglect of diatomic overlap self-consistent-field molecular orbital) method. Theoretically simulated spectra of these oligothiophenes derived from the obtained orbital energies by Gaussian broadening are compared with the observed ones. The agreement between the observed and calculated spectra is very good, particularly in the π region. It is shown from the optimized geometry that (1) αn 's have planar structure and π electrons are delocalized, (2) the oligomer with β linkages has nonplanar structure leading to limited delocalization of π electrons, and (3) the oligomers with a vinylene group are almost planar and the disturbance by the vinylene group on the delocalization is small.

Notizen: Two mathematical formulas are given in an explicit form: one develops a product of two different multiple Wiener integrals in a series of Wiener–Hermite expansions; the other one develops a product of two random variables, each of which is described by a Wiener–Hermite expansions, in a series of another Wiener–Hermite expansion.

Notizen: Nonlinear transformation of an independent Gaussian sequence by a binary hysteresis is studied by Wiener's method [Nonlinear Problems in Random Theory (MIT, Cambrige, MA, 1958)]. The output sequence of the hysteresis is represented by a series of Wiener–Hermite functionals, which are random and orthogonal (uncorrelated) to each other. From the hysteresis equation, a set of linear equations for the Wiener–Hermite functionals is derived without approximation. The equations directly show that the hysteresis is decomposed into equivalent subsystems consisting of static nonlinear elements, multipliers, adders, and linear filters. They are solved by use of random numbers generated in a computer in order to get a sample output sequence approximated by a finite sum of the Wiener–Hermite functionals. Another set of equations is derived for the mean-square values of the Wiener–Hermite functionals. In terms of its numerical solutions, the convergence property of the Wiener–Hermite functional series is discussed.

Notizen: The scattering of electromagnetic waves from a perfectly conductive slightly random surface is studied by a probabilistic method developed recently. For a plane wave incident on a homogeneous, isotropic, Gaussian random surface, a stochastic wave solution involving multiple scattering effects is approximately obtained by use of the Wiener–Hermite expansion technique in the probability theory. Then the backscattering cross section per unit surface is derived for both like and cross polarization in a closed form and is shown in the figures. The surface waves propagating along the random surface are discussed.

Notizen: Acquired generalized hypohidrosis/anhidrosis is a rare condition of unknown pathogenesis, while idiopathic cholinergic urticaria is relatively common. We report the case of a 19-year-old male with cholinergic urticaria and acquired generalized hypohidrosis, and review previously published similar cases of this association.

Notizen: Summary We describe a Japanese girl with generalized lichen nitidus. She had been exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis at 6 years of age via her teacher. At 8 years of age, she developed severe contact dermatitis on sun-exposed areas after contact with Japanese lacquer trees. Shortly after, numerous tiny, shiny, flesh-coloured papules developed over the upper part of her body. At 10 years of age, she was exposed to a school outbreak of M. tuberculosis. Her eruption showed no response to topical corticosteroids or oral tranilast, but most of the papules completely disappeared after she had received oral isoniazid for 6 months.

Notizen: Background  Adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a human malignancy associated with human T-cell leukaemia virus type I (HTLV-I). ATLL frequently involves the skin. Objectives  To correlate the clinicopathological features and prognosis in patients with ATLL and cutaneous lesions. Methods  We examined the HTLV-I proviral state and the clinicopathological features of the cutaneous lesions in 80 patients with serum anti-ATL antibody, to clarify the correlation between macroscopic/histopathological findings and prognosis. Southern blot analysis was performed in all cases to detect monoclonal HTLV-I proviral DNA integration. Results  The cutaneous lesions of 46 patients were positive for proviral DNA integration. The median survival time of patients with monoclonal proviral DNA integration in cutaneous lesions was 14 months, which was markedly shorter than that of patients negative for proviral DNA integration (72 months). Of the 46 patients with proviral DNA, 21 had solitary or multiple red nodules (including three with subcutaneous induration), eight had multiple red papules and 17 had erythema. Patients with papules and nodules had poorer prognosis than those with erythema. Histopathologically, the prognosis was poorer in patients with nodular or diffuse infiltration of medium-sized to large lymphoma cells, compared with those with perivascular infiltration of small to medium-sized lymphoma cells. Conclusions  Our results show a close correlation between clinicopathological features of HTLV-I-associated cutaneous lesions and prognosis.

Notizen: Background Susceptibility to asthma is known to involve genetic factors. Genome-wide screens have indicated that the chromosome 5q31–q34 region is linked to and/or associated with asthma. A new gene, named UGRP1 and reported by Niimi et al., encodes uteroglobin-related protein and is expressed in the lung and trachea. Niimi et al. showed the −112G/A polymorphism of the UGRP1 gene to be associated with asthma in a case–control study. Objective The objective of the present study was to replicate this association and confirm the possible role of the UGRP1−112G/A polymorphism in the aetiology of childhood asthma in a Japanese population. Methods and results We conducted a transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) in 131 families identified through paediatric patients being treated for asthma. A case–control study was also carried out by comparing the probands and 137 unrelated non-atopic non-asthmatic Japanese children and 211 unrelated healthy Japanese adults. The −112G/A polymorphism was genotyped by the PCR-RFLP method. The TDT revealed that the −112A allele was not preferentially transmitted to asthma-affected children (P=0.85). Neither the presence of at least one A allele in an individual's genotype (sum of the G/A and A/A genotypes) nor the −112A allele was more prevalent among the asthma subjects than among the control subjects. Conclusion Our findings indicate that the UGRP1−112G/A polymorphism does not play a substantial role in genetic predisposition to childhood asthma in this Japanese population.
