Notes: We describe experiments on arrays of polycrystalline Co structures fabricated by interference lithography. The dots are thin (15–40 nm), submicron in size, and are patterned with a uniaxial, in-plane, shape anisotropy axis. We use magnetic force microscopy (MFM) in the presence of an applied field to directly observe magnetic reversal in the dots. These experiments reveal that reversal occurs predominantly through the nucleation and annihilation of a single magnetic vortex in each dot. Hysteresis loop measurements indicate that the vortices are stable over a wide range of applied fields and that the limits of this range depend on the size and thickness of the dots. Using the MFM data, we determine the statistical distribution of the single-vortex nucleation field for several different arrays. We attribute the observed variance to the random orientation of the polycrystalline grains. Finally, we show that the average vortex nucleation and annihilations fields are linearly correlated to the demagnetization field of a uniformly magnetized structure. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An automated torque magnetometer for thin film measurements using the "45° method'' has been developed and built. Very low sampling rates (2 Hz) in the control process are allowed by fitting on the sample holder a circular metallic piece that acts as an electromagnetic brake. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There are several functional forms for estimating Lorenz curves from grouped data. Based on studies of the Spanish distribution of income, we propose a new functional form which provides very good fits. Our specification contains the Pareto Lorenz curve as a particular case, and allows one to compute easily, with the provided formulae, the Gini, Kakwani, and Chakravarty Inequality Indexes.

Notes: TiO2 thin films have been prepared and their structure analyzed by XRD at grazing angles and x-ray absorption spectroscopies (EXAFS/XANES). The deposition method is an ion beam induced chemical vapor deposition procedure (IBICVD) consisting of the bombardment of a substrate with accelerated O+2 ions while the vapor of a volatile metallic precursor is directed on its surface. The structure of the films was dependent on the type of substrate (glass, fused quartz, and sapphire) and on the conditions used for their preparation (temperature of substrate and beam energy of 1 or 10 keV). Thus, while on glass and silica/sapphire, an amorphous structure is formed when the substrate is at 300 K during preparation, a rutile-rich structure is obtained if the substrate is at 573 K during deposition or, even to a larger degree, when using ions of 10 keV. The amorphous structure of the films grown on glass yield 100% anatase after calcining at 773 K. On sapphire, the crystallization was less perfect and besides anatase, rutile and amorphous phases were detected after calcination at that temperature. The films prepared at 573 K or with O+2 ions of 10 keV yield after calcining a well ordered structure of rutile. A detailed analysis of the EXAFS and XANES spectra has permitted a better characterization of the amorphous and crystalline phases in the films and provided a better understanding of the crystallization processes during calcination. The contribution of the different factors controlling the crystallization of the films is discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Au/Si(111) interface has been investigated with ballistic electron emission microscopy. The Schottky barrier (SB) height and ballistic transmittance have been measured on interfaces which have been prepared with different types of monolayer-level dopants. Transmission rates but not the SB are found to depend strongly on the resulting degree of interdiffusion of the Au and Si at the interface. An irreversible modification in the transport properties of the buried interface can occur when the system is stressed with electrons injected at several volts above the Schottky barrier.

Notes: New types of magnetic hysteresis loops, inverted-in-sense and crossed, have been observed in some directions of the surface of METGLAS 2605SC circular plates (Allied Chemical Corp.) The origin of these kinds of loops and other constricted ones observed in the surface of magnetic plates is explained. They appear because the internal field that acts on surface and inside the sample is mainly determined by the bulk properties of the sample. The validity of this interpretation is tested with additional measurements in METGLAS 2605SC.

Notes: An explanation is given of the behavior with applied magnetic field of the weak biaxial magnetic anisotropy observed in pure polycrystalline nickel after plastic deformation. This explanation is based on the analysis of the superposition of torque curves corresponding to regions of orthogonal uniaxial magnetic anisotropies of magnetoelastic origin, produced by residual microstresses in tensile and compressive regions. These generate a biaxial torque curve in unsaturated specimens. This analysis explains some features of the observed biaxial anisotropy that cannot be understood by supposing that its origin is due only to a preferred orientation (texture) of the subgrain structure.

Notes: Enhancement of the transverse Kerr magneto-optic effect is attained by means of multiple reflections. A polarized and stabilized laser beam is used to observe the transverse Kerr magneto-optic effect. The beam is reflected several times on a cobalt thin film obtaining an important improvement on the effect-signal ratio if we compare it with the results for only one reflection. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new torque magnetometer has been developed and built in order to measure magnetization saturation and perpendicular anisotropy of magnetic thin films. Its main characteristic is that it employs for counteraction the torque exerted on the sample in the same field used for exciting it. This gives rise to a great simplicity and sensitivity of the measuring system.

Notes: A simple and rapid determination of the saturation magnetization Ms of thin magnetic films is achieved by measuring with a precision balance the force exerted on the film when it is saturated by a field that lies on its plane and varies with a constant gradient along it. This field is obtained with Faraday pole tips for which the exciting coils are connected in opposition.
