    Notes: Abstract  The effect of wildfire on soil microbes and extractable C (Cext) and N (Next) changed with respect to the time from burning and soil depth. Initially, microbial biomass C (Cmic) and N (Nmic) were drastically reduced in the soil surface layer (0–5 cm) and reduced by 50% in the subsurface (5–10 cm), whereas Cext increased by 62% in the surface layer and did not significantly change in the subsurface. These parameters were affected for the following 4 years, during which the average reductions in the soil surface and subsurface layers were, respectively, 60% and 50% for Cmic, 70% and 45% for Nmic, 60% and 40% for the ratio Cmic: organic C (Corg) and 70% and 30% for the ratio Nmic: total N (Ntot), while for Cext the surface layer was the only zone consistently affected and Cext decreased by up to 59%. Immediately after a fire, the Cext : Corg ratio increased by 3.5-fold and 2-fold in the surface and subsurface layers, respectively; thereafter for 2 years, it decreased in the surface layer (by up to 45%) while the effect on the subsurface layer was not consistent. The effect of burning on Next lasted 1 year, in which Next increased by up to 7- and 3-fold in the surface and subsurface layers, respectively, while the average Next : Ntot ratio doubled in the surface layer and increased by 34% in the subsurface. During the time in which each parameter was affected by burning, the soil factor explained a high percentage of variance in the fluctuations of Cmic, Nmic, Cmic : Corg and Nmic : Ntot, while those of Next and Next : Ntot, but not those of Cext and Cext : Corg depended on both the soil and its depth. In the burned soils similar patterns of response were found between the following parameters listed in pairs: Cmic and Nmic; Cmic : Corg and Nmic : Ntot; Cext and Next; and Cext : Corg and Next : Ntot. However, after the fire relationships found previously between the parameters studied and many other soils properties were either no longer evident, or were inverted. Although the addition of cellulose to the burned soil favoured fungal mycelium development and increased Cmic and Cext contents, the negative effect of burning on the microbial biomass and the Cext was not counteracted even under incubation conditions suitable for both microbial growth and C mineralization.

    Notes: Abstract In binucleate 2n-2n and 4n-4n, trinucleate 2n-4n-2n and tetra nucleate cells 2n-2n-2n-2n which had been experimentally induced by means of caffeine (0.1% in tap water) in root-tip cells of onion bulbs (Allium cepa) division cycle time increases sligthly (about 15%) when the DNA content increases from 2n to 8n chromosomes per cell. The interphase time is not significantly modified, whereas the mitosis time increases (about 50%) in the tetranucleate cells in relation to the diploid mononucleate cells. The unsynchronized initiation of prophase and the subsequent synchronization of the nuclei in the polynucleate cells suggest an inhibiting mechanism regulating initiation of the mitosis via cytoplasm.

    Notes: Abstract The rate of DNA synthesis in the course of the division cycle in root meristem ofAllium cepa growing under constant temperature and aeration conditions has been studied by means of treatment with AdR, as a specific inhibitor of the synthesis, as well as by the incorporation of tritiated thymidine. The one-hour treatment with AdR or tritiated thymidine was given at various hours in the course of the interphase of a synchronous population of binucleate cells induced by caffeine. In the case of AdR, sensitivity to the inhibition of DNA synthesis was studied by recording the delays produced by the treatment in the appearance of biprophases and bitelophases. The selection by the use of caffeine, of spontaneously synchronous populations of cells going through the telophase and becoming binucleate and the detection of the first biprophases in the subsequent mitosis provide a highly synchronized system with which to study the incorporation of tritiated thymidine during the interphase. The curves representing sensitivity to the inhibition of DNA synthesis by AdR and the rate of tritiated thymidine incorporation coincide, so that we can regard the delays, under our conditions, as proportional to the rate of DNA synthesis at the moment of the AdR treatment. This rate, in the S period, was found to be variable by both methods, being higher in the first and the last thirds of the S period (S1 and S3) and lower in the middle third (S2).

    Notes: Abstract. Clear cell sarcoma, also called malignant melanoma of soft parts, is an uncommon neoplasm that involves tendons or aponeuroses of the lower extremity. The CT features of a clear cell sarcoma arising from the abdominal wall with later peritoneal dissemination are described. Peritoneal sarcomatosis from soft tissue sarcomas is a very rare condition previously unreported in the radiologic literature. Metastases to peritoneal surfaces must therefore be considered a possible site for systemic dissemination of soft tissue sarcomas.

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports the occurrence of monosynaptic connections between dorsal root afferents and a distinct cell type — the giant neuron — deep in the dorsal horn of the turtle spinal cord. Light microscope studies combining Nissl stain and transganglionic HRP-labeling of the primary afferents have revealed the occurrence of axosomatic and axodendritic contacts between labeled boutons and giant neurons. The synaptic nature of these contacts has been confirmed by use of electron microscope procedures involving the partial three-dimensional reconstruction of identified giant neurons. Intracellular recording in spinal cord slices provided functional evidence indicating the monosynaptic connections between dorsal root afferents and giant neurons. The recorded neurons were morphologically identified by means of biocytin injection and with avidin conjugates. Electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral dorsal roots evoked synaptic responses with short, fixed latencies (1.6–5.6 ms), which remained unchanged at high frequencies (10 Hz). Excitatory polysynaptic potentials were also observed. By means of pharmacological procedures the short-latency response was dissected in two components: one insensitive to tetrodotoxin, the other abolished by the drug. The toxin-resistant component was presumed to be sustained by small-diameter C fibers. The synaptic response was mainly mediated by the glutamate-AMPA receptor subtype; however, a small component mediated by NMDA receptor was also present.

    Notes: Abstract  Conspicuous nerve-cell assemblies, identified as the marginal nuclei described in other sauropsidans, were found all along the spinal cord of turtles. γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activities were colocalized within these neurons, which also reacted positively to reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase stains. The marginal nuclei neurons may, thus, play an inhibitory function mediated by their GABA terminals and a long-distance modulatory function mediated by NO liberation.

    Notes: Abstract  NADPH-diaphorase positive (NDP) neurons and nerve fibers were found in the spinal dorsal horn (DH) and sensory ganglia of the turtle Chrysemys d’orbigny. Three well-defined types of NDP neurons were found in the DH: (a) elongated nerve cells with two radially arranged dendritic branches, (b) neurons with rostro-caudal dendritic branches, (c) bitufted neurons with two, practically symmetric branches that project to the ipsilateral and contralateral dorsal horns. A combination of the techniques that reveal NADPH-diaphorase activity with the horseradish peroxidase transganglionic labeling of the dorsal root collaterals, suggested that NDP neurons of the DH are second-order cells of the spinal sensory pathway. NDP neurons were also found in the spinal sensory ganglia at all metameric levels. Our findings indicate that the DH of turtles, like that of mammals, contains both the enzymatic machinery and the neural connections required to postulate the participation of nitric oxide in ”plastic phenomena” such as hyperalgesia and central sensitization. Two other alternatives or complementary hypotheses are discussed: (a) NDP neurons in the DH and sensory ganglia may represent specific cell populations involved in the processing of sensory visceral information; (b) NADPH-diaphorase reactivity may indicate sustained levels of neuronal activity.
