    Notes: The results of an investigation of the relationship between potentiodynamic anodic polarization behavior, composition, and microstructure for both sputtered and electroplated Ni-Fe thin-film alloys is described. The presence of high-temperature phases established by sputter deposition correlate directly with the compositional dependence of the passive current density. These results correlate exceptionally well with previous studies on the corrosion of Ni-Fe films under simulated atmospheric conditions. Electroplated films of the permalloy composition show significantly different passive behavior, as compared to sputter deposited films. Possible explanations for this anomaly are discussed.

    Notes: The dimensionality of Ni-Cr multilayered structures (MLS) was studied from the variation of the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization Ms with the Ni layer thickness. Since NiCr alloys containing more than 12% Cr are nonmagnetic the thickness of the interfaces and pure Ni regions can be obtained from the measured value of Ms by modeling the MLS and determining the thickness of the pure Ni regions. Assuming that the pure Ni regions are isolated sufficiently to behave independently, comparison was made with several theories. It was found that the observed behavior is similar to that described by the theory of Davis and Keffer with a surface anisotropy energy of about 0.1 that of the exchange energy. This theory uses nonperiodic boundary conditions and assumes a surface anisotropy field which causes the partial pinning of the surface spins. The magnetization decrease calculated with this theory falls off less rapidly with film thickness than other theories. At high fields the magnetization and Curie temperatures of the MLS having 20 A(ring) or less of Ni is found to be field dependent. This is indicative that a considerable amount of the magnetic moments arise from itinerant d electrons.

    Notes: Magnetic properties of multilayered Co/Cr films have been investigated by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and compared to magnetization studies carried out on a SQUID magnetometer. The interesting feature observed in most of the spectra was that along with an intense resonance corresponding to the uniform mode, several weak but well-defined peaks were observed at higher magnetic fields. The angular and temperature variations of the line positions indicates that these are due to cobalt atoms in the interface. In conjunction with static magnetization, the FMR studies of the main resonance lead us to believe that there may be long-range magnetic effects which result in additional anisotropy fields.

    Notes: We report fast (nanosecond) transient photovoltaic response and steady-state photovoltage of rectifying Al/C60/Au sandwich devices. The transient photovoltage changes polarity at a critical light intensity, which can be varied and controlled by applying steady-state light as bias. This ability to change the polarity of the transient photovoltaic response and to control the intensity at which the polarity changes sign offers potential for use in applications in the area of fast nonlinear optoelectronic detectors.

    Notes: Molecular beam epitaxy was used to grow ultrathin Co-Pt multilayers on GaAs (111) substrates with 200 A(ring) thick Ag layer as a buffer. Magnetic properties (B-H loop) of the multilayers, measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer, confirmed that these samples exhibit strong anisotropy perpendicular to the film surface. Reflection high energy electron diffraction and low-energy electron diffraction showed that twin-related Ag grains nucleated on the substrates. The epitaxial relationship of the multilayers with respect to the substrate was investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Twin-related grains, 30–40 nm in diameter, are present in the multilayers. These twins are generated either by propagation of existing twin boundaries in the Ag layer into the multilayers or by nucleation of twin-related Pt grains on the Ag buffer surface.

    Notes: We fabricated a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal display with positive dielectric anisotropy, whose on and off states are controlled by in-plane field. The rubbing-free device, dark in voltage-off state, reveals bright uniformity in all directions due to the dual domainlike director configuration in the voltage-on state. The electro-optic characteristics of one prototype with excellent viewing angles are reported herein. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A dual-gate-controlled single-electron transistor with coupled dot geometry has been fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator structure. Coupled dots are defined by tunable gates which are designed to separately control the tunneling potential barriers to compensate for disorder due to size fluctuation in quantum dots. The Coulomb-blockade phenomena observed in linear and nonlinear transport regimes were found to be enhanced by the multidot coupling. The Coulomb staircase (nonlinear effect) appears more clearly with the increasing number of coupled dots, indicating definite suppression of the inevitable cotunneling process. In the linear regime, the frequency of Coulomb oscillation was able to be tuned by changing the interdot coupling strength. These results indicate that enhancement of the Coulomb blockade and tunability can be achieved through replacing the traditional single dot by gate-controlled multidots in future single-electron devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ single crystal was oxygen-plasma treated at 200 °C. Our electrical and magnetic measurements indicate that the oxygen-plasma treatment can be an effective low temperature method of oxygen stoichiometry modification of colossal magnetoresistance manganites. The oxygen plasma is also shown to introduce structural defects, whose effects are prominent near the Curie temperature (Tc), giving rise to anomalies in the resistivity and magnetic behaviors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
