    Notes: Abstract Cobalt ferrite/metal composite thin films with a saturation magnetization (Ms) of ∼0.729 Weber m-2 were prepared by a reactive sputtering method. The Ms of the thin films increased with increasing substrate temperature. The microstructures of the thin films were identified by a convergent beam electron diffraction method. For the thin films deposited at high substrate temperatures (〉300 °C), CoxFe1-x (x≈0.62) metal alloys were separated from the cobalt ferrite matrix. A cobalt ferrite phase was determined as CoFe2O4 with a cubic structure (a0=0.839 nm) and a space group of Fd3m, while a metal phase CoxFe1-x (x≈0.62) with a b.c.c. structure (a0=0.289 nm) and a space group of Im3m. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract. Turbulent flow over a sinusoidal solid wavy surface was investigated by a direct numerical simulation using a spectral element technique. The train of waves has an amplitude to wavelength ratio of 0.05. For the flow conditions (Re=hU b/2ν= 3460) considered, adverse pressure gradients were large enough to cause flow separation. Numerical results compare favorably with those of Hudson's (1993) measurements. Instantaneous flow fields show a large variation of the flow pattern in the spanwise direction in the separated bubble at a given time. A surprising result is the discovery of occasional velocity bursts which originate in the separated region and extend over large distances away from the wavy wall. Turbulence in this region is very different from that near a flat wall in that it is associated with a shear layer which is formed by flow separation.

    Notes: Abstract Nineteen patients with nervous system metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were evaluated retrospectively. Nervous system metastasis was frequently initial presentation of HCC (seven out of 19 patients). Seven patients had metastases of the brain, of whom four had a stroke-like presentation. CT or MRI in these patients showed intracerebral hematomas in watershed areas. Enhancing lesion or edema adjacent to the hematoma helped differentiate these lesions from classical hypertensive hematomas. One patient with metastasis to the clivus presented with isolated six nerve palsy. The remaining 11 patients had spinal epidural metastases producing myelopathy in seven and radiculopathy in four. Radiation therapy failed to control the clinical course.

    Notes: Summary The effect of heat transfer on the steady laminar compressible boundary layer flow past a horizontal circular cylinder has been studied. The resulting coupled nonlinear partial differential equations have been solved numerically using a very efficient finite-difference scheme. Specific results are given for the boundary layer separation parameter and the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients.

    Notes: Summary.  The seroprevalence to Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) or human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) was surveyed in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) carriers with or without skin diseases, and also in HIV-1 negative individuals in Thailand. Using an immunofluorescence assay, the seropositive rates to lytic antigens of HHV-8 in HIV-1 carriers with or without skin diseases were 25% and 7.4%, respectively, but none of HIV-1 negative individuals had antibody. The seroprevalence to HHV-8 antigens was high in HIV positive individuals with low CD4/CD8 ratio, suggesting that HHV-8 is reactivated during the immunosuppressive state. Several polypeptides with apparent molecular weights of 34–38,000 and 40,000, which were specific to HHV-8, were identified by the immunoprecipitation test using the seropositive sera. Our results suggested that HHV-8 co-existed with HIV in HIV-1 carriers and the existence of HHV-8 may be associated with clinical features in the skin.

    Notes: Vacuum line kinetic studies of the reaction of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride and benzene or toluene, using aluminum chloride as the catalyst and dichloromethane as the solvent were determined at 25°C by means of gas chromatography. The reaction is first-order in arene, tosyl chloride, and in AlCl3 as catalyst. Noncompetitive results are kT/kB=22±7 with a product sulfone isomer distribution: ortho, 14±1%; meta, 4.3±0.2%; and para 82±1%. With hexadeuteriobenzene kH/kD was determined to be 1.8±0.1. Rate constant ratios and product isomer distributions were also determined competitively: with AlCl3, kT/kB=30±2; % ortho, 13±1; % meta, 4.0±0.5; % para, 84±3; with SbCl5, kT/kB=40±4; % ortho 10.3±0.4; % meta, 4.7±0.2; and % para, 85.0±0.5. The kT/kB ratio for AlCl3 and the meta sulfone product percentages for both AlCl3 and SbCl5 are considerably higher than those reported in the literature. NMR and Raman studies suggest a molecular complex between p-tosyl chloride and AlCl3, with coordination through oxygen as the dominant species and the probable electrophile in CH2Cl2.
