Notes: Abstract The steady acoustic streaming generated around straight and precurved oscillating ultrasonic files driven by the Piezon-Master 400 unit was examined in the free field and in small channels using a stereomicroscope. In addition, the effect of file-wall contact on streaming production was also investigated. The results indicated that the ultrasonic files can generate acoustic streaming both in the free field and in the small channel. Higher velocity streaming was observed when smaller size files were employed and when the file was precurved. Light file-wall contact did not totally inhibit streaming while severe file-wall contact inhibited movement of the file and, as a result, no streaming was observed. The positions and length scales of the streaming vortices appeared to be influenced by the presence of boundaries. In the free field, two rows of vortices were situated along the sides of the file while in the small channel, the vortices were positioned above the surface of the file. These results indicated that it is possible for acoustic streaming to occur in a confined space as in a root canal provided that severe file-wall contact is avoided. It is therefore recommended that light filing or allowing the file to freely vibrate during some stage of treatment should be carried out in order to generate streaming in the root canal.

Notes: Supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) was used to extract natural food colors from Annatto (Bixa orellana) seeds with different pressures and temperatures. Results from the reverse thin-layer chromatographic separation and GC/MS revealed that SC-CO2 extracts were composed mainly of bixin, geranylgeraniol and norbixin. Differences in absolute values of solubility parameters (SPD) between these main compounds and SC-CO2 indicated bixin was more easily extracted than norbixin under conditions used. A higher yield of total pigments was obtained at extraction pressure above 310 bar than at 210 bar and 50°C.

Notes: The radiographic and pathologic findings of two Peruvian Paso foals with osteopetrosis are described. Both foals, one male and one female, presented with respiratory difficulty, brachygnathia and failure to rise after birth. Both foals were mildly anemic, hypogammaglobulinemic and had elevations in serum alkaline phosphatase. Increased medullary bone opacity was noted on radiographs of the extremities, spine and skull in both foals. A lack of normal cortical:medullary bone distinction was evident radiographically. The medullary primary spongiosa appeared to run in parallel columns away from the physes of all long bones and the vertebrae. This created a distinctive hour glass appearance to the osteopetrotic bones. One foal developed a bacterial pneumonia. Both foals were euthanized due to failure to thrive. Histopathology and electron microscopy documented these foals to have normal osteoclastic numbers but lack normal ruffled borders, lack of a clear zone and normal lysosomal numbers indicative of cellular dysfunction. These clinical, radiographic and pathologic findings are similar to the juvenile, lethal autosomal recessive form of osteopetrosis described in humans. Osteopetrosis has not been previously described in a female foal.

Notes: In situ resistance versus temperature or time for reactions between 32 and 57.5 nm of titanium and undoped or doped polycrystalline silicon (boron, arsenic, or phosphorus, 7.9×1019–3.0×1020/cm3) has been measured and no clear correlation was found between the activation energy for the formation of the industrially important low-resistance C54-TiSi2 phase and its formation temperature. It is also demonstrated that with certain moderate doping levels typical of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor manufacturing, boron or phosphorus-doped polycrystalline silicon can delay the formation of C54-TiSi2 more than arsenic-doped polycrystalline silicon. Finally, by using in situ resistance measurements, it is demonstrated that the "two-step'' thermal annealing process similar to a salicide process requires less thermal annealing time at high temperatures to form C54-TiSi2 than a single "one-step'' thermal anneal at the same temperature. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A UHF/microwave technique that measures the wave propagation velocity along a modified microstrip line to determine the thickness of an adjacent film of water (up to about 1 mm) on a metallic surface is described. The technique may be extendable to the measurement of the thickness of coatings on both metallic and nonmetallic surfaces.

Notes: A fast-response chromel-alumel (and chromel-constantan) microthermocouple is described and its dynamic characteristics are measured. The microthermocouple features a microdisk junction 0.08 mm in diameter and 2.5 μm thick. Its time constant in turbulent flow of liquid Refrigerant-113 (a poor heat conductor) is measured to be ∼4.6 ms. This time constant was reduced to ∼3.4 ms with a phase-lead compensation circuit. It was possible to distinguish between vapor and liquid phase temperatures in turbulent subcooled boiling flow of Refrigerant-113 with the compensated microthermocouple.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper studies the relationship between design mix and mechanical properties (compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, endogenous shrinkage) of high-strength concretes of the 50–100 MPa range. The models proposed for each of these properties are based on an analysis of the hardness of concrete considered as a composite material, offering the possibility of tracing the properties of the concrete through to those of the matrix. The properties of the matrix are linked to the two main parameters of the mix (water/cement and silica/cement ratios) by empirical laws obtained by averaging out experimental data. Eleven concretes were made with the same ingredients, by varying separately the design mix parameters, also with the aim of identifying the effect of these parameters on the properties under study. The accuracy of the models proposed has been evaluated from these experimental data and other data drawn from the literature. Since these models form a synthesis of present knowledge of the material, they constitute a valuable contribution to the specification of high-strength concretes.
