Notes: Background: As many as 50% of patients with reflux symptoms have no endoscopic evidence of oesophagitis. This multicentre study was designed to assess symptom relief after omeprazole 20 mg once daily in patients with symptoms typical of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease but without endoscopic evidence of oesophagitis. Methods: Patients (n=209) were randomized in a double-blind study to receive either omeprazole 20 mg once daily (n=98) or placebo (n=111) for 4 weeks. Symptoms were assessed at clinic visits and using daily diary cards, with patient-completed questionnaires providing additional data on symptoms and on psychological disturbance. Results: On completion, symptom relief favoured omeprazole: 57% of patients on omeprazole were free of heartburn (vs. 19% on placebo), 75% were free of regurgitation (47%) and 43% were completely asymptomatic (14%), each with P〈0.0001. Fewer patients in the omeprazole group required alginate/antacid relief medication (P〈0.05). Symptom relief (time to first heartburn-free day) was more rapid with omeprazole (2 vs. 5 days on placebo; P〈0.01). A greater reduction in anxiety occurred in the omeprazole group (P〈0.05). Conclusion: Omeprazole 20 mg once daily is effective in providing relief of the symptoms typical of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in patients with essentially normal oesophageal mucosa.

Notes: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease characterized by a progressive obliterating fibrosis of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts. The pathogenesis of PSC is poorly understood but it is thought to be an immune-mediated disease. The optimal therapy which successfully improves symptoms, delays progression towards liver failure and transplantation and prevents the onset of cholangiocarcinoma remains elusive. Although current treatments are used to manage cholestasis and its consequences and some of the more general complications of the disease, none of the current therapeutic agents have been shown to retard and reverse the rate of disease progression. The role of cupruretics, corticosteroids, methotrexate, anti-fibrogenic agents and ursodeoxycholic acid in the treatment of PSC is reviewed. Orthotopic liver transplantation remains the only therapeutic option for advanced PSC but the timing of transplantation remains controversial and the possibility of recurrence of the disease in the graft is increasingly recognised. It is likely that greater insight into the pathogenetic mechanisms involved in PSC will allow therapy to be targetted more specifically at the biliary epithelium.

Notes: Abstract. The neutron deficient 199At nucleus has been studied in the 175Lu+28Si reaction at Eb= 141 MeV. In order to select events of interest in the presence of the very strong background caused by fission, γ-rays have been detected in coincidence with recoiling evaporation residues. The excited states of 199At observed for the first time may indicate that this nucleus is deformed.

Notes: Abstract The58Ni(30Si,αpn)82Y reaction at a beam energy of 134 MeV was used to populate the odd-odd nucleus82Y and coincidentγ rays depopulating high spin states in the evaporation residues were detected with the EUROGAM Phase 2 array. A superdeformed structure has been observed with an intensity of 1.5±0.5%. The cascade of 9 coincidentγ rays has consecutive energy spacing of ∼160 keV. This corresponds to a dynamic moment of inertia which is almost constant at approx mately 25h 2 MeV−1. The band is interpreted as a signature=0, negative parity SD band with aπ51 V52 intrinsic intruder configuration.

Notes: Abstract: High-spin states in 167Hf, populated in the 141Pr(30Si, p3n)167Hf reaction, have been studied using the nordball Ge detector array. Three rotational cascades have been observed for the first time and the previously-known level scheme has been extended to significantly higher spin. Band-crossing effects are discussed within the framework of Woods-Saxon cranking calculations and are found to be in good agreement.

Notes: Abstract The pyrethroid fenvalerate showed significantly faster activity against adult ♀ two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch c.f. azinphosmethyl using broad bean leaf discs sprayed in a Potter tower. LC50s for fenvalerate were similar at 24 and 48 hr (0.056 and 0.051g AI/1) while LC50s for azinphosmethyl were significantly different at 24 and 48 hr (0.72 and 0.38g AI/1, respectively). Mortality was partitioned to run-off and direct mortality. Fenvalerate showed an increasing contribution to mortality by run-off with increasing concentration. Increasing concentrations of azinphosmethyl had no effect on the proportion of T. urticae running off the discs. Fenvalerate inhibited egg production c.f. azinphosmethyl (60% and 20% inhibition respectively c.f. control after 24hr). The effect was not permanent. Carbaryl showed no acaricidal or inhibitory effects at 1g AI/1. T. urticae detected fenvalerate residues as reflected by choice of oviposition sites on untreated halves of leaf discs c.f. treated halves. Azinphosmethyl had no effect on oviposition preference. Phytoseiid mites were highly sensitive to fenvalerate residues. Predators moved off the test arena into sticky barriers after feeding on fenvalerate-treated eggs or walking on glass slides treated at 0.00005g AI/1.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die AI(Nb, Ta)Ti−2 Substitution im Titanit: Auftauchen einer neuen Mineralspecies?
Notes: Summary The highest (Nb, Ta) content ever encountered in titanite is reported from the Maršíkov 11 pegmatite in northern Moravia, Czech Republic. This dike is a member of a pegmatite swarm of the beryl-columbite subtype, metamorphosed under conditions of the amphibolite facies. The pegmatite carries, i.a., rare tantalian rutile intergrown with titanian ixiolite, titanian columbite-tantalite, fersmite and microlite. Fissures generated in the Nb, Ta oxide minerals during deformation are filled with titanite, formed by reaction of the oxide minerals with metamorphic pore fluids. The titanite displays limited degrees of substitutions Na(Ta 〉 Nb)(CaTi)−1, (Ta 〉 Nb)4□Ti−4Si−1 and AI(OH, F)(TiO)−1, but an extensive (and occasionally the sole significant) substitution (Al 〉 Fe3+)(Ta 〉 Nb)Ti−2, responsible for widespread oscillatory zoning. This substitution reduces the proportion of the titanite componentsensu stricto, CaTiSiO4,O, to less than 50 mole % in many analyzed spots. The extreme composition corresponds to (Ca0.994Na0.011)(Ti0.436Sn0.007Al0.280Fe3+ 0.006Ta0.199Nb0.079)Si0.988O4(O0.974F0.026). However, so far this substitution fails to generate compositions that would define a new species.
