Notes: Abstracts An economic and sensitive test system for measuring random and directional migration of human neutrophils is described. The technique, based on a modified Boyden chamber equipped with a two-filter system, permits a substantial reduction of both incubation time and sample volume. The influence of various technical factors such as the neutrophil concentration in the cell suspension, the incubation time of the chambers, the test concentration of activated plasma or serum, the presence of heparin, and the procedure for separating neutrophils from human peripheral blood, was investigated. Standardized procedures for measuring and reporting neutrophil chemotaxis are proposed. The method has been used to study the significance of factors regulating neutrophil migration such as cytotaxin inactivators and neutrophil immobilizing factors (NIF). Activity of cytotaxin inactivators as assessed in undiluted serum or plasma at pH 7.4, 6.0 or 4.0 was very low. In contrast, potent neutrophil immobilizing activity was found in human serum or diluted plasma. These factors which inhibit migration were accordingly termed neutrophil immobilizing factors of plasma (NIF-P) and neutrophil immobilizing factor of serum (NIF-S). These factors are heat-stable, non-dialysable and of high molecular weight.

Notes: Summary The susceptability to, plastic changes of single units along the afferent visual pathway (optic tract/OT/, dorsal lateral geniculate body /LGB/) was investigated by means of classical conditioning procedures. These consisted of pairing either two light stimuli in different parts of the receptive field or pairing a light-spot with a non-visual stimulus. OT and LGB units were classified into dominant tonic and phasic groups on the basis of their response pattern to illumination of the receptive field center. 1) No consistent, reproducible modification was found in OT units (either in the tonic or in the phasic group) and in most LGB units with dominant tonic discharge pattern. 2) One-third of phasic LGB units (11% of the whole sample) with large, eccentric receptive fields exhibited consistent modifications of the response pattern during conditioning which persisted in some units for several minutes, in other units only for 20–30 seconds. 3) It has been suggested that the phasic (transient or Y-) system of the LGB incorporates plastic elements with a capability of short-term information storage.

Notes: Summary Basic aspects and recent advances in the understanding of the pharmacological mechanism of action of the clinically most used antiparkinson drugs are reviewed. Recent human and animal biochemical investigations clearly confirm and extend previous findings indicating that benserazide is much more potent than carbidopa as peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor. L-DOPA in combination with benserazide or carbidopa constitutes the best available therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD). To reduce peaks and rapid fluctuations of L-DOPA plasma levels (possibly responsible for peak-dose dyskinesias and end-of-dose deterioration) a slow-release formulation of L-DOPA in combination with benserazide or with benserazide plus catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitors should be developed. In parkinsonian patients under long-term L-DOPA therapy monoamine oxidase inhibitors type B (MAO-B) e.g. (−)-deprenyl and firect dopamine receptor agonists (bromocriptine, lisuride, pergolide etc.), due to their L-DOPA-sparing effects, alleviate in some cases L-DOPA-induced side-effects e.g. dyskinesias and on-off phenomena. However, since (−)-deprenylm, due to its metabolism to (−)methamphetamine and (−)amphetamine, seem to have indirect sympathomimetic activity, new selective MAO-B inhibitors devoid of indirect sympathomimetic effects should be tested clinically to assess the functional role of pure MAO-B inhibition in the therapy of PD. The auxiliary therapy with direct dopmaine receptor agonists of the D-2 subtype represents another valid approach which should be further investigated in order to find novel dopamine agonists, less expensive than bromocriptine and strictly selective for D-2 receptor sites.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary With a simple and sensitive method ammonia was measured in exspired air from healthy persons and patients. The values show a considerable variation, which ammounts to ±62% in healthy persons. In patients it is not possible to calculate the blood ammonia from the exspired ammonia. For diagnosis of uremia no reliable results are obtainable.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 20 nierentransplantierten Patienten mit stabiler Nierenfunktion wurden 16 Serumproteine systematisch untersucht.
Notes: Summary We have investigated 16 serum proteins in 20 patients with stable renal function after renal transplantation. Our investigations have shown the following substantial findings: a regular increase of prealbumin, α1-glycoprotein, haptoglobin, hemopexin and β2-glycoprotein, as well as a rather frequent increase of α2-macroglobulin. As far as variations of the serum protein levels are concerned there was no correlation with kidney disease, accompanying illnesses, therapy or interval since transplantation.

Notes: Summary An 18-year-old man suffered from recurrent bacterial meningitis. Investigation of the complement system revealed deficiency of the 8th complement component (C8) in the patient and his sister. Genetic defects of the terminal complement components C5 to C8 predispose toNeisseria infections, probably due to a lack in bacteriolytic activity. It is to be noted that 1 year ago the patient had been hospitalized for a culture-proved pneumococcal meningitis.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A micromethod for the determination of ammonia in 100 µl of capillary blood is described. Trichloroacetic acid, half neutralized with sodium hydroxyde, is used for the precipitation of proteins. Thus arteficial formation of ammonia by acid hydrolysis can be avoidet almost completely. The protein-free filtrate is directly mixed with the reagents of the phenol-hypochlorit reaction. Normal values could be determinated between 47 and 115 µg/100 ml capillary blood, the mean being 81 µg/100 ml. Capillary blood determinations yielded significantly higher values than those in venous blood of the same patients. Whole-day-profiles of blood ammonia can easily be obtained by this method.

Notes: Abstract Convergence structures (Limitierungen) defined by H. R. Fischer [1] in 1959 anduniform convergence structures (uniforme Limitierungen) introduced by C. H. Cook and H. R. Fischer [2] in 1965 are generalizations of the concepts of topology and uniformity respectively. A convergence structure, induced by some uniform convergence structure, will be called (L)-uniformizable (Limes-uniformisierbar). In this paper a necessary and sufficient condition for (L)-uniformizability of a convergence structure will be given. As a consequence any separated (Hausdorff) convergence structure on a set turns out to be (L)-uniformizable. Also any compatible convergence structure (separated or not) on a group is (L)-uniformizable.
