    Notes: Abstract The amorphous phase of SiO2 produced upon recovery of shock-compressed quartz demonstrates a wide range of refractive indices which can be correlated to the shock state. Both infra-red absorption spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the shock-produced amorphous SiO2 has a statistically more-random atomic distribution and longer Si-O and shorter Si-Si separation than does fused silica. By accounting for phase transformation, the calculated values of the shock and residual temperature are much higher than those obtained by Wackerle (1962) to a pressure of 700 kbar. Our results are consistent with experimental ones.

    Notes: Abstract  It is generally accepted that early human prostate cancers reveal higher androgen dependency than do advanced ones. In the present study, we examined whether the animal model of prostate cancer has already lost androgen dependency at the early stages of carcinogenesis. At experimental week 46, androgen deprivation was induced in rats and the incidences of atypical hyperplasia and cancer were examined in the ventral, dorsolateral prostate, coagulating glands, and seminal vesicles. Androgen deprivation significantly lowered the incidence of atypical hyperplasia in all four organs. As for the incidence of cancer, no significant differences were observed in the coagulating glands and seminal vesicles. Regarding atypical hyperplasia, androgen deprivation significantly decreased the proliferative cell nuclear antigen labeling index in the coagulating gland and seminal vesicles. The presence of cancer was also decreased in the coagulating gland but not in the seminal vesicles. With control group specimens, more intense staining of androgen receptor was observed in atypical hyperplasias than in cancers. Compared with the atypical hyperplasias, the cancers revealed low androgen dependency at the early stages of carcinogenesis. The cancers in the seminal vesicles also revealed higher androgen independency than did those in the coagulating gland.

    Notes: Abstract Energy-energy-correlations (EEC) have been measured with the JADE detector at c.m. energies of 14 GeV, 22 GeV and in the region 29 GeV〈E cm〈36 GeV. Corrected results are presented of EEC and their asymmetry, which can be directly compared to theoretical predictions. At 〈E cm〉=34 GeV a comparison with second order QCD predictions yields good agreement for the string model fragmentation resulting in a value of the strong coupling constant α s =0.165±0.01 (stat.). The independent fragmentation models, which yield values of α s between 0.10 and 0.15 depending on the treatment of energy and momentum conservation and of the gluon splitting, do not provide a satisfactory description of the data over the full angular range.

    Notes: Abstract The production of collinear muon pairs has been studied using the JADE detector at thee + e − storage ring at PETRA. Results for the total cross section and the angular distribution were obtained at centre of mass (cm) energies ranging from 12 to 46 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity offLdt〉90 pb−1, of which 71.2 pb−1 were taken at $$\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle $$ =34.4 GeV and 17 pb−1 at $$\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle $$ =42.4 GeV. The results are compared to electroweak theories, in particular the “Standard Model”.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of volatile anesthetics, i.e., methoxyflurane, halothane and enflurane, on the electroretinogram (ERG) were studied in 15 albino rabbits. The ERG was analyzed in terms of the a-wave, and the first oscillatory component (01) in the b-wave. The 01 peak latency showed a significant dose-related prolongation when anesthetic end-tidal concentrations were in excess of 0.8 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC). One MAC, a measure of anesthetic potency, is the end-tidal concentration of an anesthetic at 1 atmosphere that induces immobility in 50% of animals against a noxious stimulus. The amplitudes of the a-wave and the 01 decreased in dose-dependent manners, but their changes were less striking than those of the 01 latency. The peak latency of the a-wave remained unchanged. We conclude that the 01 peak latency is a useful monitor of the depth of inhalational anesthesia.

    Notes: Abstract B1-type tantalum nitride (polycrystalline bulk state) was synthesized by shock compression. Shock-compression recovery experiments of the porous sample of tantalum nitride with a hexagonal structure (CoSn-type) were performed in the impact-velocity range up to 1.5kms−1. The instrumental chemical analysis, X-ray and electron diffraction experiments were carried out on the recovered tantalum nitride sample and the combustion-synthesized B1-type sample for comparison. The recovery rate of the B1 -type phase increased with increasing porosity, impact velocity and impactor thickness; among these above all the effect of porosity was most remarkable. Almost 100% recovery rate was achieved for the powder of 70% porosity impacted by a 2 mm thick tungsten plate with velocities above 1.4 kms−1. It was confirmed by chemical analysis that the nitrogen content did not change by shock compression. The chemical formulae of the shock-synthesized and combustioned-synthesized B1-type phases were estimated to be TaN0.96–0.99 and TaN1.13–1.16, 1.27–1.30, respectively. The lattice parameter of the shock-synthesized B1 -type (Fm3m) phase was ao=0.43363- + (1) nm. The results of X-ray and electron diffraction experiments also supported that the shock-synthesized B1-type tantalum nitride has a good stoichiometry compared with the combustion-synthesized ones.

Die Pinealzellen sind sekretorisch tätige Zellen. Das Sekret wird in Form von „synaptischen“ Bläschen im Bereich des Golgi-Apparates produziert. Außer den Bläschen wurden osmiophile Granula (Pigmentgranula und Fetttröpfchen) verschiedener Menge beobachtet. 3. Die Pinealzellen sind multipolare Zellen mit Fortsätzen von verschiedener Länge und Dicke. Sie enden mit keulenförmigen Anschwellungen in den perivaskulären Spalten. 4. Die im Fortsatz enthaltenen Bläschen (Durchmesser 350–1400 Å) besitzen in der Regel ein elektronendichtes Granulum. Sie werden wahrscheinlich durch die Basalmembran in das Kapillarlumen abgegeben. Damit stellt sich der Sekretionsmodus der Zirbeldrüse als ähnlich heraus mit dem bei der Neurosekretion oder bei Abgabe von neurohumoralen Transmitters in der Nervenendigung.
    Notes: Summary The epiphysis of 30 dogs was studied electronmicroscopically. The pineal cells are secretory elements; their product arises from small vesicles in the Golgi apparatus. In addition to such vesicles, osmiophilic granules (pigments and lipids) were observed in varying amounts. The pineal cells are multipolar with processes of diverse length and thickness. These end with bulbous swellings in perivascular clefts. The vesicles found in the processes (diameters 350–1,400 Å) as a rule contain an electron dense granule. They are probably released into the capillary lumen via the basement membrane. Thus the secretory process in the pineal seems to resemble that in neurosecretory centers or that of the site of production of neurohumoral transmitters at nerve endings.
