Notes: SiC fiber reinforced SiC matrix (SiC/SiC) composites are one of the most promisingmaterials for high temperature structural applications such as power generation and propulsionsystems. SiC/SiC composites are, however, susceptible to accelerated attacks in water vaporenvironments through oxidation and volatilization reaction. For protection from such attacks,Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBCs) are indispensable. We have investigated some oxides and rare-earth silicates as topcoat candidate materials forEBCs. Topcoat materials must be stable in the high-water-vapor pressurized environments at hightemperatures. Also, it is important that the thermal expansion coefficient of topcoat materials issimilar to that of the SiC/SiC composites. In this study, first, zirconium oxides, lutetium silicates and yttrium silicates were selected astopcoat candidate materials. They were exposed in a water-containing atmosphere at a temperature of1673 K for 100 h under a total pressure 0.96 MPa. Mass changes, structure of crystals andmicrostructures were investigated after the exposure experiments in order to evaluate the thermalstability of these materials. After their estimation, lutetium silicates were considered to be promisingfor topcoat materials. Then, lutetium silicates were coated as the topcoat of an EBC system on SiC/SiC composites, andtheir fracture toughness and microstructures were investigated after exposure to an oxidizingatmosphere. The evaluation results of the topcoat materials are reported in this paper

Notes: Small-angle scattering measurements utilizing anomalous dispersion effect just below the Zr and Ni K edge have been made for welded Zr-based amorphous materials. The measurements were carried out at a bending magnet beam-line 40B of SPring8. A small and parallel X-ray beam generated at the third generation synchrotron is suitable for nanostructure mapping of heterogeneous materials, whose structure varies with less than a millimeter scale. The remelted and heat-affected zones were examined for electron-beam welded Zr-Ni-Cu-Al alloys. Merits and the characteristics, as well as its present limitations of scanning small-angle scattering with a use of anomalous dispersion effect is discussed as a tool to examine microstructure in the spatially inhomogeneous materials in macroscopic scale as well as microscopic scale

Notes: The strain dependence of the critical current, Ic, of Bi2223/Ag/Ag-alloy compositesuperconducting tapes has been studied both experimentally and analytically under bendingdeformation for two types of tape used in the VAMAS bending round-robin program (classified asVAM1 and 3). Our former analysis showed that the experimentally obtained Ic values were betweenthe calculated ones based on a damage-free initial state and a case where delamination occupied thefull width of the tape mid-plane. The experimentally obtained Ic values were explained by thedelamination occupying partial width of the tape mid-plane. However, the microscopic observationindicated that the delamination location in the thickness direction was not limited to the mid-plane.In the present study, the analysis was modified to incorporate the movement of the delaminationlocation in the thickness direction. The calculated Ic values with delamination increased when thedelamination location moved to compressive side of the tape, and decreased when that moved totensile side of the tape. Finally, the experimental Ic values can be understood by the distribution ofdelamination in both width and thickness direction

Notes: Anomalous small and wide angle scattering measurements on electron-beam weldedjoint has been carried out at Zr absorption edge. We preformed an anomalous and simultaneoussmall- and wide-angle scattering (A-SWAXS) analysis on the welded joint with and withoutcrystallization. For the wide angle measurements, we extend the SAXS measurements up to 13nm-1, where q is still below the first halo, but is large enough for several Bragg peaks to beobserved. In the present analysis, the ASAXS analysis at the HAS/beads interface isinterpreted in conjunction with the corresponding AWAXS analysis. The origin of SAXS andWAXS was found to be different

Notes: Influence of applied tensile and bending strains on the local and overall transport criticalcurrent Ic and n-value at 77 K of multifilamentary Bi2223-composite superconductor was studied, where the n-value refers to the sharpness of the transition from super- to normal conducting state.Under both tensile and bending strains, the damage such as transverse and longitudinal cracking ofthe Bi2223 filaments and interfacial debonding between the filament and silver progressed. Theextent of damage and accordingly the critical current was different among the local portions. Therelation of the local current and n-value to overall ones was analyzed with a voltage summationmodel, with which the experimental result was described well. Further analysis revealed that thedistribution of local critical current could be described by the Weibull distribution function andn-value could be expressed as a function of critical current. Based on these results, a Monte Carlosimulation was carried out to predict the overall critical current from the distribution of local criticalcurrent, with which the experimental results could be described

Notes: Abstract A theoretical model of the longitudinal strength of brittle fibre-reinforced composites with brittle reaction zones was presented for both cases of strongly and weakly bonded fibre/brittle zone interfaces. First, on the basis of the fracture mechanics, a model of the strength of the fibres coated with strongly adhering brittle zones was proposed as a function of the thickness of the brittle zones. Next, the conditions under which debonding occurs at the interfaces were investigated with the aid of the shear lag analysis proposed by Cox. The theoretical model was then examined using composites with strongly and weakly bonded interfaces. The proposed model agreed fairly well with the experimental results. Finally, the permissible thickness of the brittle zone below which no reduction in fibre strength appears was calculated, using the proposed theory, under the condition of strong interfacial bonding, for carbon, boron and silicon carbide fibres which are of practical use. The calculated values of the thickness were smaller than 1 μm.

Notes: Abstract By using the single carbon-steel fibre-copper matrix composites, the important parameters controlling dislocation motions in the fibre, matrix and composite, namely flow stress, internal stress, effective stress, change in flow stress due to change in strain-rate or temperature, stress exponent of strain-rate, effective stress exponent of dislocation velocity, activation volume and activation enthalpy were measured at the stage in which the mechanical interaction between the components was negligible. It was found that all the composite parameters were determined only by the properties of the components and for each parameter, a modified rule of mixtures was derived.

Notes: Abstract In order to calculate stress distribution in unidirectional discontinuous fibres embedded in a metal matrix, a method based on the shear-lag analysis was proposed. Using this method, the influence of fibre length, interfacial bonding strength, distance between fibre ends in the longitudinal direction, and applied strain to composite on both stress distribution and average stress of fibres was estimated for a number of examples.

Notes: Abstract By employing a single thick molybdenum fibre-copper matrix composite with very weak interfacial bonding, it was confirmed that flow stress, internal stress, effective stress and change in flow stress due to change in strain rate of the composite obey the simple rule of mixtures; strain-hardening exponent, stress exponent of strain rate, effective stress exponent of dislocation velocity and activation volume obey the modified rule of mixtures in the whole range of plastic deformation of the composite. This means that the inherent features of the fibre in the present composite were conserved beyond the failure strain of the fibre tested alone, and the above deformation parameters of the composite were, to a first approximation, determined by the inherent parameters of the fibre and the matrix.

Notes: Abstract The embedded molybdenum fibre in a copper matrix composite was elongated apparently uniformly although the interface was so weak that necking in the fibre could not be suppressed by the matrix. To explain this result, a possible mechanism was suggested where suppression of necking in the fibre is caused by strain hardening of the composite as a whole and by an increment in strain rate in the cross-section where the fibre starts necking, but the incremental deformation amount and the incremental strain rate of the cross-section are small. On the basis of this mechanism, and with the aid of Hart's criterion, a new instability approach to tensile behaviour of the composite is presented. It was found that the stability of the composite is determined mainly by the strain-hardening exponent of the composite, which is determined by the modified rule of mixtures. The present derived condition of instability of the composite is in good agreement with that proposed by Mileiko.
