Notes: Summary The activity of 219 cells in the olfactory bulb of waking, freely breathing mice was analysed, and it was found that their spontaneous discharge rate varied between 0.3 and 33 AP/s. Both butyric acid and geraniol elicited responses of four types: 38% of the 98 responses were of type 1 (excitation), 43% of type 2 (inhibition), 10% of type 3 (complex structure), and 8% were characterized by a change in the temporal pattern of the activity. Response duration varied from less than 500 ms to more than 1 min. 52 secondary neurons were stimulated with four different concentrations of the odor substances. All of the responsive cells showed a clear ability to discriminate concentration. That is, response magnitude varied with intensity, producing non-monotonie curves. Most of the neurons responded only in a region of a more or less limited concentration, and in no case was a saturation curve observed. Approx. 40% of the neurons responded to the lowest concentration tested (10−8 vol. % of butyric acid or geraniol). The strongest stimuli, 10−2 vol.%, were relatively ineffective.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Wir berichten über zwei Schwestern mit kongenitalem renalem Salzverlustsyndrom.
Notes: Abstract In the serum of two infant sisters with a congenital renal salt-losing syndrome, Na was rather low and K considerably increased. Even with Na levels of 126 mval/l, sodium was excreted in the urine. Creatinine and hippurate clearances were normal. Primary disturbances of the steroid metabolism were not detectable; plasma cortisol was normal, aldosterone and renin were compensatorily increased. Treatment with DOCA was unsuccessful. Whereas the first infant died (in another hospital), the second one throve well with high oral substitution of NaCl. There were no pathological findings other than a moderate hyperplasia of the juxtaglomerular apparatus, in a kidney biopsy. Except for minimal activity in the ascending limb of Henle's loop, there was no membrane bound Na, K-ATPase in the microdissected tubules. This finding most probably explains the renal salt loss, as this enzyme is necessary for the transcellular flow of sodium and potassium.

Notes: Structural states of Al-Sc, Al-Hf and Al-Zr alloys rapidly quenched from the liquid statehave been studied. Features of structures in dependence on the nature of alloying elements, on thequenching temperature and the cooling rate by the crystallization of ribbons have been investigated.Fractal structures are formed by the quenching from the certain temperature-concentration region. The change of the morphology of structures has been researched during the aging process

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Problem: An investigation into CT-controlled carve-suction biopsy for a histological clarification of indefinite intrathoracic masses. Materials and Method: 143 CT-controlled interventions were performed on 102 patients. For histological evaluation purposes, tissue was taken under application of the carva-suction biopsy method (16–18 gage). The lesions with a diameter of 5–70 mm were located in the mediastinum (25%), were close to the thoracic wall/pleural (40%) and intrapulmonary (35%). Results: 92.2% (94/102) of the interventions provided histologically utilizable material in at least one biopsy specimen. The clinical suspected diagnosis was confirmed 78 times (76.5%), while a different discase was evident 16 times (15.7%). In 8 cases, a diagnosis was not possible (7.8%). The total complication rate was 21.6%. The following were observed: 18 pneumothoraxes, 2 hemothoraxes, and 2 patients who demonstrated a hemoptysis. In 4/102 patients (3.9%) complications arose which had to be treated therapeutically. Two-sided complications were not observed. Conclusions: The CT-controlled carve-suction biopsy can be employed histologically to clarify indefinite intrathoracic findings with a high degree of certainty and justifiable complication rates. In addition to this, the minimally invasive procedure helps to reduce costs.
