    Notes: This work has achieved a novel self-setting biphase porous calcium phosphate cement (CPC).This biphase porous CPC is mainly formed by α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) and β-tricalciumphosphate (β-TCP). The influence of the weight percent (wt%) of β-TCP of the powder was studied. Thesetting time is mainly 10-30min, and increasing with the weight percent of β-TCP. Powder ray diffraction(XRD) analysis showed that most α-TCP have turned to low-crystallinized HA after immersed inSimulated Body Fluid (SBF) of 37˚C for 7 days. SEM observation showed that the resultants are mainlyformed with micropores and microcrystallites, and more micropores turned out in cements with moreβ-TCP after immersed in SBF for 8 weeks

    Notes: The aim of this work is to improve the mechanical properties of calcium phosphate bonecement (CPC) by appending chitosan microspheres to CPC base. That chitosan degrades rapidly thanbone cement has been proved by previous investigations. Porous CPC has low compressive strengthbecause of the pores in it weakening the structure. Additive chitosan microspheres can improve themechanical properties by bearing the compress with the CPC base and produce pores after degradation.This study investigates the effect of chitosan microspheres on the setting time, mechanical properties,phase evolution and morphology of CPC. The additive proportion of chitosan microspheres ranges from 0wt% to 30 wt%. Compared with original CPC, the modified CPC has higher compressive strength,without significantly affecting the chemical properties. The phase composition of the CPC is tested byXRD. The microstructures of CPC are observed using SEM. The final setting times range from 5~15minutes and can be modulated by using different liquid and powder (L/P) ratio

    Notes: Porous β-TCP scaffold was prepared using three-dimensional gel-lamination technology withfoamy slurry. Then the sintered scaffolds were soaked in 1.5SBF solution to achieve scaffolds withbone-like structure. After soaking, a low crystallized bone-like apatite layer containing CO3-2 was formedon the surface of the scaffold. With presoaking in NaOH solution, the formation of the bone-like apatitelayer on the surface of the scaffold in 1.5SBF solution was accelerated. In this way, a bioactive porousβ-TCP scaffold with bone-like structure could be prepared

    Notes: Time domain tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy has been used to measure rotationally resolved transient absorption line shapes and nascent rotational populations for CO2 molecules excited into the (0111) vibrational state by collisions with translationally hot hydrogen atoms. The even rotational levels are more heavily populated than the odd levels, in agreement with propensity rules derived earlier by Alexander and Clary. The nascent populations and transient linewidths are interpreted in terms of a theoretical model that lends insight into the H–CO2 collision dynamics. The cross section for exciting (0111) is ∼0.23 times the cross section for exciting (0001), and ∼0.38 times the cross section for exciting (1000).

    Notes: The first hyperpolarizability (β) of a strongly charge-transfer (azulenic-barbituric) chromophore is measured by hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) experiment using 11 excitation wavelengths, ranging from 900 nm to 1907 nm. The measured wavelength-dependence of the β value is used to investigate the dispersion relation of the first hyperpolarizability of the charge-transfer chromophore. When excited by the 1064 nm wavelength laser radiation, the experimental HRS spectrum shows a two-photon resonance (TPR) peak, which does not coincide with the maximum of the linear absorption spectrum. The wavelength dependence of the first hyperpolarizability cannot be explained by an undamped or damped two level model. However, incorporating vibrational motion in the damped two-level model results in a good fit between theoretical and experimentally measured β, especially in the vicinity of TPR region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid-laden cerebral vessels are characteristic features in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The principal component of amyloid in senile plaque and amyloid-laden cerebral vessels is β-amyloid (Aβ), a peptide proteolytically derived from a large amyloid precursor protein (APP). To date, several alternatively spliced human APP transcripts have been described. Here, we report the identification of a novel alternative splicing isoform of the human APP gene, APP639, which excludes exon 2 as well as exons 7 and 8. RT-PCR and Southern blot analysis show that APP639 mRNA is expressed in many human fetal tissues. In contrast, the APP639 transcript is hardly detected in the aged human cerebral cortex from both pathologically confirmed sporadic AD cases and nondemented controls. However, APP639 mRNA exists in the adult human liver. Western blot analysis shows that the protein product produced from the APP639 cDNA could be recognized by the APP antibody, and it does lack the exon 2 coding region. These results suggest that APP639, a novel alternative splicing isoform of human APP gene, does exist in human tissues in vivo.

    Notes: Continuous zirconia fibers with a nanometer ceramic structure and a tensile strength up to 2.8 GPa were fabricated by pyrolyzing polyacetylacetonatozirconium precursor fibers through a special atmosphere heat treatment. DSC-TGA, GC-MS, IR, SEM, and TEM were used to study the fiber transformation mechanism during heating. Results showed that special atmosphere heat treatment could make the organics in the fibers come out directly without carbonization and remove them almost entirely under 400°C, and the obtained zirconia fibers had few defects, good continuity, and high strength.

    Notes: The purpose of this project was to develop rapport with a Chinese Community Association and then establish preventive diabetic and hypertension programs with the Chinese in Chinatown, Hawaii. Subjects were recruited from this Chinese Community Association. Two hundred Chinese responded to the invitation. Among these. 75 individuals had either Type 2 diabetes, hypertension or both. Thirty-six males and 39 females ranging in age from 51 years old to 96 years old (Mean = 71.76, SD = 9.58) participated. Surveys and educational programs were carried out in Chinese. Results were described in terms of quantitative measures (family support and health outcomes) and qualitative experiences (case studies). Eighty percent of participants had decreased their diastolic blood pressure from above 95 mmHg to below 90 mmHg and systolic blood pressure from above 155 mmHg to below 140 mmHg. Ninety-five (n= 71) percent of participants had maintained their glucose level within the 90 mg/dL to 150 mg/dL range with a mean reduction of 57.86 mg/dL in one year. The hardest thing for families was the glucose self-monitoring. Case studies suggested that open-minded active listening and persistence formed the basis for developing a culturally sensitive community-based self management program for chronic diseases. Collaboration among the community, public health nurses, and diabetes nurse educators facilitated the process of community education and health promotion.

    Notes: The effect of corrosion upon dental amalgam was studied by measuring the effect of anodic polarization on its tensile strength. A conventional tensile testing method using dumb-bell shaped specimens deformed along the long axis was employed. The results showed a significant reduction (27%) in the mean tensile strength, due to the anodic polarization of conventional amalgam, whereas the strength of the high Cu-containing Dispersalloy amalgam was unaffected by polarization. When the diametral tensile strengths of polarized and unpolarized conventional amalgam and Dispersalloy specimens were compared (ADA Specification No. 1), no significant difference in strength was observed.These results indicate that the anodic corrosion of γ2 phase network in the conventional amalgam fillings can be directly attributed to a reduction of tensile strength which would be manifested clinically as marginal breakdown. It appears also that the diametral tensile test is not sufficiently discriminating to allow for an in vitro simulation of clinical properties.
