Notes: Abstract Five new antigenic markers (allotypes) of swine serum lipoproteins are described. Specific antiallotype reagents were obtained from alloimmune precipitating sera. Identification studies and genetic analysis indicate that the five serum alloantigens—designated Lpp6, Lpp11, Lpp12, Lpp13, and Lpp14—are markers of low-density lipoproteins (LDL),d 1.002–1.075 g/ml, and are members of a previously described Lpp system. The Lpp6 allotype belongs to the group of individual markers and is determined by a new codominant allelic gene,Lpp 6, whereas the remaining four antigens—Lpp11, Lpp12, Lpp13, and Lpp 14—named common specificities, behave as alternative variants to Lpp1, Lpp2, Lpp3, and Lpp4, respectively, forming pairs of mutually exclusive alloantigens. Each Lpp gene in a heterozygous animal expresses itself independently on separate molecules and each haplotype carries one individual and at least four common specificities. The relationship between common and individual specificities, together with their number in the complex haplotypes, seems to shed some light on evolution of Lpp genes. It is proposed in this concept that the original gene for low-density lipoproteins in swine, and also in rhesus monkeys and the human, consisted of genetic information for common specificities only, the individual specificities evolving later as a result of point mutations.

Notes: We show here that a static disordered binary alloy in which one of the impurities is prevented from clustering in the lattice as a result of strong repulsive interactions, e.g., will possess a localization–delocalization transition regardless of the spatial dimension. We show explicitly that (N)1/2 of the electronic states are completely unscattered by the disorder and lead to superdiffusive transport with a mean-square displacement growing in time as t3/2 over a wide range of the static disorder in one dimension. The model is shown to be applicable to electron transport in Fibonacci lattices fabricated from two kinds of materials such as GaAs and AlAs. It is shown explicitly that transient grating experiments can be used to probe the location of the unattenuated states in the energy band. We propose that this model can be used to design molecularly based electronic filters.

Notes: In this paper a new circuit design for automatic electrostatic vibroscopes is presented. Previously, the component which stabilized the self-oscillatory motion of the filament in the feedback loop of electrostatic vibroscopes was a negative temperature coefficient thermistor. In the present system this device is replaced with a programmable analog compander. This modification represents an improvement because response time is faster, the steady-state conditions are more stable, and the overall performance of the vibroscope is less susceptible to errors caused by changes in environmental conditions.

Notes: The canine parvovirus (CPV) empty-capsid structure has been determined and refined to 3.0 Å resolution in the tetragonal space group P43212 with cell dimensions a = b = 254.5 and c = 795.0 Å. The successful structure determination shows that reasonably good diffraction data were obtained in spite of the very long c axis. The structure was solved by molecular replacement using the electron density of CPV full particles in a monoclinic space group. The phases were refined by non-crystallographic symmetry averaging. The structure refinement was carried out by using the programs PROLSQ and X-PLOR. The final R factor for the structure that included 85 water molecules per icosahedral asymmetric unit was 21.1% for reflections between 6.0 and 3.0 Å resolution with an r.m.s. deviation of bond lengths of 0.020 Å from ideal values. The structure of CPV empty capsids showed conformational differences with respect to full capsids at a region where icosahedrally ordered DNA in full particles interacts with the capsid protein. It also confirmed the absence of density along the fivefold axis in the CPV empty-particle structure in contrast to the situation in CPV full particles.

Notes: A multi-frequency ohmic heating system with 30 Hz∼1 MHz range which could deliver 250 watts was developed for measuring electrical conductivity and absolute dielectric loss of food samples. Pacific whiting surimi paste and stabilized mince in the 20∼70°C range were tested at frequencies from 55 Hz to 200 kHz. Sample impedance decreased slightly with frequency. The DC electrical conductivity (σdc) and absolute dielectric loss (ε″) of Pacific whiting surimi paste increased with temperature and salt concentration; adc and ε″ of the stabilized mince increased with temperature. Empirical models of electrical properties for surimi paste (moisture content 79% and salt at 1, 2 or 3%) and stabilized mince (77% moisture and 0.74% salt) were derived. Electrolytic corrosion diminished with frequency.

Notes: Soy-cheese whey curd was prepared by mixing soymilk and cheese whey with the addition of glucono-delta-lactone (GDL) to coagulate the proteins. Three soymilk concentrations, 6:1, 8:1 and 10:1 (water:bean, v/w), and four cheese whey levels, 3%, 4.5%, 5.25% and 6% (w/v), were used. Heating the GDL treated soy-cheese whey milk in a hot water bath at 85°C for 25 min consistently produced a smooth and compact. curd without syneresis. Textural properties of the curd were tested by an Instron machine. Five parameters-stiffness, bioyield point, firmness, relaxation and plasticity—were determined. Among these, only stiffness and firmness could be used as the textural parameters for the curd.
