    Notes: We report here the first clear demonstration of intensity-dependent phase shift due to electronic nonlinearity in a nonlinear polymer waveguide in which propagation distances over 5 cm have been achieved with total attenuation of ∼1.2 cm−1 . Intensity-dependent coupling angle, intensity-dependent coupling efficiency, and limiter action behavior have been observed in the polyamic acid waveguide using grating excitation with 400 fs, 80 ps, and 10 ns pulses. A nonlinear grating coupler analysis identifies the subpicosecond and picosecond processes with electronic nonlinearity, but the dominant effect in the nanosecond experiment is due to thermal nonlinearity derived from weak absorptions. The magnitude and sign of n2 of electronic nonlinearity are measured.

    Notes: The corrosion behaviour of an indigenous cast alloy of Ag-Sn-Cu, developed for crown and bridge prostheses, was studied in artificial saliva, with and without the addition of 0·1 m lactic acid, using a potentiostatic technique, and compared with that of the standard cast alloy of Ag-Pd (Ney 76). The values of different parameters such as corrosion potential and corrosion current density were determined for the indigenous alloy of Ag-Sn-Cu and the Ag-Pd alloy. The rate of corrosion of the indigenous alloy was found to be relatively higher than that of the Ag-Pd alloy up to an applied potential of + 400 mV. However, while the indigenous alloy showed a distinct tendency for passivation below + 200 mV at the current level of 0·5 mA/cm2 in the artificial saliva (pH 5·7) at 37 °C, no such tendency for passivation was shown by the Ag-Pd alloy even up to + 400 mV. The tendency for passivation by the indigenous Ag-Sn-Cu alloy, however, was not shown in the artificial saliva in the presence of 0·1 m lactic acid (pH. 2·7) at 37 °C. Minor variation was observed in the corrosion behaviour of the indigenous Ag-Sn-Cu alloys of different grades prepared by alloying elements of varying purity.

    Notes: A. virus causing mosaic and leaf deformation of Physalis minima has been identified as an isolate of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) on the basis of its transmission by aphids in a non-persistent manner, polyhedral particles of 29 nm diameter, molecular weight of coat protein subunits us 24-5 kDa. serological relationship with a CMV isolate and a tripartite single-stranded RNA genome with a subgenomic RNA4- Furthermore. cDNA representing coat protein gene was synthesized and cloned. Complete nucleotide sequences (890 nt) were obtained which showed a coat protein gene open reading frame of 657 residues. THE nucleotide sequences provided the 218 amino ACID sequences of the coat protein. Nucleotide as well as amino acid sequences revealed more than 90% identity with the CMV subgroup I strains.

    Notes: Background: The Epicoccum nigrum (EN) extract used in allergy disorders exhibits batch-to-batch variations in protein composition and allergenic potency. In this study, the allergens of EN grown in different media were investigated. Methods: EN was grown in five different nutrient media as stationary cultures at 25°C for 5–23 days. The growth pattern was characterized by measuring dry weight, and protein and carbohydrate content. The antigenic and allergenic content of EN extract was evaluated with EN-positive patients' sera and antibodies raised in rabbit. Results: The growth of EN in Czapeck Dox medium yielded insufficient material, while Sabouraud's broth with yeast extract (SBY) gave maximum spore-mycelial mass and protein content. Potato dextrose broth (PDB) and potato dextrose agar (PDA) showed higher dry weight and protein in 7–9-day cultures. SDS–PAGE resolved 26, 22, and 21 protein bands in EN extracts from cultures of day-13 SBY, day-7 PDB, and day-9 PDA, respectively. IgE/IgG immunoblots showed more allergenic ( 25)/antigenic ( 25) bands in EN cultured in SBY than in the others. Specific IgE ELISA and intradermal tests showed EN extract from day-13 culture in SBY to be the most potent. Conclusions: The day-13 culture of EN in SBY was the most potent and may be selected for preparing EN extracts for diagnosis of allergy and future studies.

    Notes: Background:  Several proteins from Curvularia lunata have been identified as important fungal allergens. It will be worthwhile to study the functional aspects of these allergens. The present study aimed at purifying a major allergen and determining its biological function.Methods:  Concanavalin A and Superdex 75 were used to purify Cur l 1 major allergen from C. lunata. Cur l 1 activity was determined qualitatively and quantitatively. Serine protease inhibitors and specific substrate was used to determine the biological function of the protein.Results:  Concanavalin A-bound fraction showed five allergenic proteins, which on Superdex G-75 purification gave a homogenous Cur l 1 protein. Cur l 1 showed IgE reactivity with 80% of the C. lunata hypersensitive patient's sera indicating it to be a major allergen. It showed protease activity on different substrates. Cur l 1's amino terminal sequence, GLTQKSAPWGLGADTIVAVELDSY, showed homology with the alkaline serine protease precursor. Phenylmethylsulfonylfluoride, pefabloc, aprotinin and leupeptin inhibited 70–80% enzymatic activity of Cur l 1 and no inhibition was observed with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). A dose-dependent hydrolysis of Nα-benzoyl-l-arginine ethyl ester-hydrochloride, a specific serine protease substrate was obtained with Cur l 1.Conclusion:  A major glycoprotein allergen Cur l 1 was purified to homogeneity from C. lunata. Amino terminal sequence and biochemical assays identified it as a serine protease.

    Notes: This paper presents a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based implementation of Hybrid of Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) and Proportional-Integral (PI) speed controller for Direct Torque Controlled (DTC) Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive. The fuzzy membership function is used for hybrid control of these two FLC and PI speed controllers in such a way that at the time of dynamic conditions such as starting, the degree of belonging for FLC speed controller is higher than the PI speed controller and near set point the degree of belonging of PI controller is having higher weightage. The simulation model of the drive system is developed in MATLAB environment with simulink, PSB and FLC toolboxes to analyze the performance of the PMSM drive system. This hybrid speed controller is found suitable for DTC based PMSM drive to maintain the high level of performance while maintaining the excellent response at the time of starting, speed reversal, load perturbation and steady-state operating condition of the drive.
