    Notes: The behavior of nitrogen and the formation of nitrogen-oxygen donors in nitrogen-doped Czochralski-silicon crystals (Cz-Si) were studied by the electrical and infrared-absorption measurements in samples annealed in different conditions. Experiments showed that nitrogen-oxygen shallow donors are formed during the nitrogen-doped Cz-Si crystal growth. Nitrogen-oxygen thermal donors are generated in temperature range of 300–550 °C, and the behavior of these thermal donors resembles that of the thermal donors in Cz-Si crystals [P. Wagner, C. Holm, and E. Stirtl, Festkoperprobleme 24, 191 (1984)], but they are monovalent donors with the same levels as those of neutral thermal donors; no new electrically active center is generated in the temperature range of 600–900 °C.

    Notes: The two-parameter model potential originally proposed by Ning and Sah [Phys. Rev. B 4, 3468 (1971)] for calculating the ground-state energies of group V and group VI impurities in silicon is extended to the variational calculation of the thermal donor ionization energies. In the multivalley effective mass approximation, the theoretical results are in excellent agreement with the reported experimental data. This provides additional evidence for the assumption that thermal donors consist of five to thirteen oxygen atoms, as first proposed by Ourmazd, Schröter, and Bourret [J. Appl. Phys. 56, 1670 (1984)].

    Notes: The number of oxygen atoms in a thermal donor (TD) can be determined directly from the reduction of the concentration of interstitial oxygen in Czochralski (Cz) silicon after annealing at 450 °C for 75 h, when the effect of high-carbon concentration in Si crystals is considered. It is found that on the average a single TD cluster contains eight oxygen atoms. Some TD-inactive large oxygen clusters are produced if the annealing time is longer than the time for TDs to reach their maximum concentration or if the annealing temperature is higher than 475 °C. We also find that the smallest TD cluster contains five oxygen atoms and the largest TD cluster contains 13 oxygen atoms.

    Notes: Two basic functions of getters in silicon during gettering processes are investigated in detail. The sink action of getters for absorbing impurities is described by a gettering parameter g, which relates to the diffusion ratio gd, segregation coefficient S, and the activation energies Em,Si, Em,G of impurities in intrinsic Si and in the getter phase. The kickout mechanism is suggested for describing the diffusion of impurities because of the contribution of Si interstitials to kick out the impurities to be gettered. Based on the interaction of Si interstitials with impurities and the influence of the sink in absorbing impurities, a set of gettering equations is derived and used to calculate the gettering of gold in silicon with back surface getters. Theoretical results agree well with reported experimental data and five conclusions are provided to determine the optimal gettering conditions for a given gettering cycle.

    Notes: Background:  Forcipomyia taiwana is a tiny, blood-sucking midge that cause intense pruritis and swelling in sensitive individuals. It is distributed island-wide in rural Taiwan and Southern China.Objective:  This study aimed to study the allergic immune responses and identify F. taiwana allergens.Methods:  Crude whole body F. taiwana extracts were prepared with phosphate-buffered saline. The specific IgE antibody was determined by enzyme-linked immunoassay and immunoblotting. Protein was analyzed by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry.Results:  Among the 372 subjects that were exposed to F. taiwana bites, 179 (48%) reported an immediate skin reaction with/without delay reaction and 41(11.1%) reported a solely delay reaction. The skin of 21 subjects was tested with F. taiwana extract. Of these 21 subjects, 12 (57.1%) produced immediate skin reactions and contained high levels of specific IgE antibody against F. taiwana. Immunoblotting revealed that 11 allergenic components are able to bind specific IgE. Allergens of 22, 24, 35, 36, and 64 kDa bound 50, 50, 75, 66.7, and 75% of IgE-containing sera tested, respectively. Tryptic fragments of the 24, 35, 36, and 64 kDa allergens were analyzed by ESI-MS/MS. Selected tryptic peptides of 24, 35, and 36, and 64 kDa allergens exhibited significant sequence identity with triosephosphate isomerase of Anopheles merus,Tenebrio molitor,Ochlerotatus togoi, and Chrysops vittatus, fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase of Antheraea yamamai and Homalodisca coagulata, and a slow muscle myosin S1 heavy chain of Homarusamericanus and a protein with unknown function from A. gambiae, respectively. The 35 and 36 kDa proteins may represent different isoforms of the fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase.Conclusion:  We conclude that immediate reaction to F. taiwana bites is IgE mediated and the 24 (For t 1), 35 (For t 2), and 64 kDa (For t 3) proteins are candidates for major F. taiwana allergens. Further studies are needed to confirm these allergens.

    Notes: Summary We examined the effect of different combinations of esmolol and nicardipine upon the circulatory response to tracheal intubation. One hundred patients were randomly allocated into five groups of twenty to receive pretreatments of saline or different combinations of esmolol (0.5 or 1.0 mg.kg−1) and nicardipine (15 or 30 µg.kg−1). Significant tachycardia persisted over a 5-min period after intubation in all five groups compared with baseline levels (p 〈 0.05). Patients receiving esmolol 1.0 mg.kg−1 and nicardipine 30 μg.kg−1 showed no significant change in systolic blood pressure after tracheal intubation compared with baseline and significant lower peak systolic blood pressure than those receiving saline (p = 0.023).
