Notes: We have measured rates of recombination of electrons with simple molecular ions in the presence of helium at densities from 2.5×1019 to 2.9×1020 cm−3 at reduced temperatures of 77, 125, and 150 K. The results agree surprisingly well with the neutral, collisional recombination mechanism proposed by Bates and Khare for atomic ions recombining in plasmas of high neutral density.

Notes: Spectroscopic observations of N2 second positive band emissions from photoionized afterglow plasmas indicate that dissociative recombination of electrons with N+4 ions results in the formation of N2 molecules in the C 3Πu (v=0,1) state. The measured recombination rate coefficient of (2.6±0.3)×10−6 cm3/s at T=300 K is considerably larger than that found in earlier work.

Notes: Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) has been applied to the investigation of the electronic structure of oligothiophenes with 4–8 thiophene rings. In a series of α-linked oligomers (αn with n being the number of rings), a systematic evolution of the π band is observed. Several peaks which correspond to the π band are observed in the region of 0.7–3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), and the bandwidth becomes broader with increasing n. The nonbonding π band is observed at 3.5 eV below EF and its energy is almost independent of the number of thiophene units. UPS spectra of α7 and α8 are fairly similar to the spectra of polythiophene, showing that these oligomers are good model compounds of the polymer. The ionization threshold energy of α7 and polythiophene was observed to be 5.3 eV. The effect of irregularity on the π-electron system was also studied by using oligomers which contain a β linkage or a vinylene group at the middle of the molecule. The UPS spectra showed that the β linkages significantly affect the electronic structure of polythiophene, while the vinylene group does not. In order to analyze the UPS spectra and to investigate the electronic structures of oligomers, the orbital energies and the geometries of these oligomers are calculated by the semiempirical MNDO-SCF-MO (modified neglect of diatomic overlap self-consistent-field molecular orbital) method. Theoretically simulated spectra of these oligothiophenes derived from the obtained orbital energies by Gaussian broadening are compared with the observed ones. The agreement between the observed and calculated spectra is very good, particularly in the π region. It is shown from the optimized geometry that (1) αn 's have planar structure and π electrons are delocalized, (2) the oligomer with β linkages has nonplanar structure leading to limited delocalization of π electrons, and (3) the oligomers with a vinylene group are almost planar and the disturbance by the vinylene group on the delocalization is small.

Notes: We present near steady state photoinduced absorption spectra of two forms of polyaniline. Both the emeraldine base (nondegenerate ground state) and pernigraniline (degenerate ground state) exhibit long lived photoinduced nonlinear excitations with transient absorptions within the π→π* gap. In the case of the emeraldine base, two well-resolved photoinduced absorption bands are observed with maxima at 0.9 and 1.47 eV, accompanied by a bleaching of the 2 eV absorption edge. The different relaxation rates of the two bands indicate that they arise from two independent photoinduced nonlinear excitations. The results are discussed in terms of intrachain and interchain excitations. The possibility of deep traps on defect sites in pernigraniline is suggested.

Notes: Samples of HgBa2CuO4+δ (Hg-1201) were annealed under various conditions. After carefully controlling annealing time, annealing temperature (Ta), and O2 partial pressure (P0), we were able to find the reversible annealing conditions for Hg-1201. Under 1 atm O2 at 260 °C≤Ta≤400 °C, the obtained Tc is nearly the same (∼97 K). However, it decreases quickly with Ta(approximately-greater-than)300 °C in high vacuum (P0∼10−8 atm), and reaches zero at Ta=400 °C. On the other hand, Tc decreases with the decrease of Ta in high-pressure O2 (∼500 atm) and reaches ∼20 K at about 240 °C. In the entire annealing region, the oxygen surplus varies significantly from 0.03 to 0.4, and a wide range of Tc variation (0→97 K→20 K) was obtained with anion doping alone.

Notes: We describe the preparation, characterization, and use of "plastic'' infrared polarizers that consist of electrically conductive polyaniline blends with common bulk polymers such as poly(acrylonitrile), polyethylene, and poly(vinylalcohol). It is shown that uniaxially oriented blends of protonated polyaniline in, for example, poly(acrylonitrile) display a polarizing efficiency over the range from 400 to 4000 cm−1 that matches or surpasses that of commercial wire grid polarizers. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Highly conductive metallic oxide thin films of SrRuO3 with single crystalline quality have been grown on (001) SrTiO3 by using pulsed laser deposition. The films have a [00l] orientation with an in-plane relationship of [110]SrRuO3 // [100]SrTiO3. They have excellent metallic behavior with room temperature resistivity of ∼310 μΩ cm and a residual resistance ratio of about 7 at 4.2 K, the largest reported to date. A clear ferromagnetic transition at ∼147 K was detected by resistivity and magnetic measurements. However, the transition becomes blurred as the density-of-point defects increases in the films following a 400 keV proton irradiation with an accumulative dose up to ∼6.0×1016 ions/cm2. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Novel improvements of the pseudospectral method for assembling the Coulomb operator are discussed. These improvements consist of a fast atom centered multipole method and a variation of the Head–Gordan J-engine analytic integral evaluation. The details of the methodology are discussed and performance evaluations presented for larger molecules within the context of DFT energy and gradient calculations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The operational lifetime of polymer light-emitting diodes was studied at several temperatures in the range from 25 to 85 °C. When operated in constant current mode, at luminances greater than 100 cd/m 2, lifetimes of around 20 000 h were noted. Two significant changes in performance were found during continuous operation: the luminance of the devices varied in a nonmonotonic fashion, and the operating voltage increased in a linear fashion. Both of these changes were thermally activated, with the changes accelerated at higher temperatures. These changes are also accelerated at higher current densities. We discuss possible mechanisms for these degradation processes. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
