    Notizen: A transmission electron microscope operating with a cold field emission source has been modified to facilitate differential phase contrast mapping and applied to the observation of microscopic magnetic features appearing in recorded longitudinal media. After describing the design and performance of the scanning Lorentz electron microscope, as we call it, results on the observation of bit patterns delineated on Co-based sputtered longitudinal media are presented. Relations of observed bit profiles to macroscopic magnetic properties of media and to device performance are discussed. Then, magnetization fluctuation on a scale of magnetic crystallites constituting the medium is examined. Also given is an account of a stray field effect inherent in hard magnetic materials.

    Notizen: A new type of opto-optical modulation effect in nematic liquid crystals is experimentally observed. The transmitted intensity of a He-Ne laser beam passing through a liquid crystal sample while applying a dc voltage is modulated by illuminating the sample with a xenon flash lamp pulse. The response time is fast, of the order of several milliseconds. The modulated state lasts for about 500 ms. A modulated intensity of light as large as ten times the unmodulated one is obtained. The physical origin of this effect is also discussed.

    Notizen: Soft magnetic properties were investigated together with crystallization process and grain size for FeCu (3d transition metals) SiB alloys with fine grains. They were rapidly quenched from the melt to achieve amorphous states and then annealed above their crystallization temperatures. In the group of 3d transition metals studied, low magnetic core loss at high frequency was obtained for V-substituted Fe-based alloys, because only a bcc Fe solid solution with diameter of about 20 nm precipitated. On the other hand, Cr- or Mn-substituted alloys could not be attained with good soft magnetic properties because of the existence of Fe-metalloid compounds besides the bcc phase by annealing above their crystallization temperatures. The effect of grain size on the soft magnetic properties is more prominent at lower frequency. Diffraction peaks which are characteristics of an ordered phase (DO3) are observed, which is the origin of excellent soft magnetic properties in FeAlSi alloys.

    Notizen: We have developed a nonmagnetic (CoCr30)Zrx [x=7, 10, 14 at. %] seed layer for CoCrPt glass media and have compared its structural and noise properties to those of the media with a Ta/Zr dual seed layer, which have lower media noise than the media with a Cr seed layer. The media with a (CoCr30)Zr10 seed layer had lower media noise than that with the Ta/Zr dual seed layer, which is attributed to reduced grain size in the magnetic layer. However, the media noise increased drastically owing to a 78% increase of the grain size in the magnetic layer when the Zr content in the seed layer increased from 10 to 14 at. %. The transmission electron microscope analysis indicates that the (CoCr30)Zr10 seed layer has a nanocrystalline structure, while (CoCr30)Zr14 was almost amorphous. This would be the main reason of the drastic change in the grain size of the magnetic layer. The microstructure of the CoCrZr seed layer is very sensitive to the Zr content and strongly affects the microstructure of the magnetic layer and thereby media noise. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The exchange effect due to a strong electron–electron Coulomb interaction in a nonmagnetic spacer metal is taken into account in the interlayer exchange coupling theory in magnetic superlattices. A Rudermann–Kittel–Kasuya–Yoshida-like oscillatory behavior is superimposed on the exponentially decreasing ferromagnetic bias which is the contribution from the e–e exchange interaction. Some of the antiferromagnetic exchange couplings in the oscillatory behavior may disappear because of the ferromagnetic bias. The first and second antiferromagnetic exchange couplings disappear and the third one remains in Fe/Pd/Fe magnetic sandwiches in numerical calculations and the result agrees well with the experimental one. In magnetic superlattices with a Pt spacer metal, the first and second antiferromagnetic exchange couplings are clearly shown because of the relatively weak ferromagnetic bias, as observed in Co/Pt superlattices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The influence of oxygen pressure on epitaxial quality of La0.3Sr1.7AlTaO6 (LSAT) films deposited by laser ablation on SrTiO3(100), LaAlO3(100), and MgO(100) substrates has been investigated. X-ray diffraction shows only (00l) peaks in the oxygen pressure range from 10−3 to 500 mTorr. However, the crystallinity of LSAT films is found to be sensitive to oxygen pressure and dependent on substrates. LSAT films on SrTiO3 have the narrowest full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.05° at 300 mTorr. The films on LaAlO3 exhibit a FWHM of 0.3° at 50–100 mTorr. On MgO substrate, significant improvement of crystallinity is achieved at 200–300 mTorr, but rocking curves give an FWHM of 0.70°–1.00° due to the large lattice mismatch between LSAT and MgO. Atomic force microscopy analyses demonstrate smooth LSAT surfaces without identified grains. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction studies suggest a two-dimensional growth mode for LSAT films on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 and a three-dimensional growth mode for LSAT films on MgO. Cross-sectional high-resolution electron micrographs indicate that LSAT films on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 have defect-free epitaxial structure and atomically flat interfaces. An 80 Å thick intermediate layer with partially disordering is observed between LSAT films and MgO substrates. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Exfoliated cervical cells from 321 Japanese women were examined for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33 and 35 using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and dot-blot hybridization methods. HPV DNA was present in 9.3% of patients with normal cervixes, 72.7% of patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and 77.8% of patients with invasive carcinoma. Younger patients (〈inlineGraphic alt="leqslant R: less-than-or-eq, slant" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:1048891X:IJG05010045:les" location="les.gif"/〉29 years) with normal cervixes had a 18.5% incidence of HPV DNA, whilst similar older patients (〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:1048891X:IJG05010045:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉50 years) had a 1.9% incidence, a significant difference (χ2= 6.478, P 〈 0.01). In the CIN I and II groups, an incidence of 11.1% of types 16 and 18 was found, while in the CIN III or invasive carcinoma group the incidence was 58.1%, again a significant difference (χ2 = 12.075, P 〈 0.01). Furthermore, persistence or progression of CIN showed a significant correlation with infections by types 16 and 33 (χ2= 4.904, P 〈 0.01). However, no significantly different incidence of HPV infection was found between the CIN and the invasive carcinoma groups. It is suggested that (a) younger patients with normal cervixes have a higher incidence of HPV infection than do older patients; (b) HPV types 16, 18 and 33 are important etiologic agents of CIN III and invasive carcinoma, as well as in the persistence and progression of CIN; (c) progression of CIN to invasive carcinoma may depend on factors other than HPV infection in the cervix.

    Notizen: Abstract: The nucleotide sequence of mRNA for rat cerebellar spot 35 protein, a Ca-binding protein, was determined from recombinant complementary DNA (cDNA) clones. The sequence was composed of 1, 714 base pairs (bp) which included the 783 bp of the complete coding region, the 130 bp of the 5′-noncoding region, and the 801 bp of the 3-noncoding region containing a polyadenylation signal. In addition, a polyadenylic acid [poly(A)] tail was also found. Because the size of spot 35 mRNA was estimated to be about 1,900 bases by Northern blot analysis, the longest insert was verified to contain a nearly full-length cDNA sequence including the poly(A) tail. The amino acid sequence of the protein deduced from the nucleotide sequence contains 261 amino acids and at least five Ca-binding domains. There was a high homology in the amino acid sequences (79%) and the nucleotide sequences (77%) between spot 35 protein and chick intestinal Ca-binding protein (28K).
