Summary 1. Local blood flow through the liver of unanaesthetized man has been measured by use of a special flexible „Wärmeleitsonde“ introduced into the liver by direct liver puncture. The basic features of this method are described and its validity established. 2. The local liver blood flow is not constant but shows frequent spontaneous rhythmic fluctuations of about 20% of the mean perfusion rate. The average periodicity of these fluctuations was about 30 sec. 3. In addition to these cycles there were sometimes slower, non-rhythmic variations in which in the extreme cases the blood flow could fall to 60% and rise to 140% of the initial perfusion rate. 4. Examples were given for the effects of intravenous injections of Decholine, Glucose and Noradrenaline on local liver blood flow. The same drug occasionally had qualitatively different effects on the liver blood flow in different subjects. 5. The present method by virtue of its continuous recording makes it possible to follow rapid changes in liver blood flow and thus provides information not obtainable by the usual indirect techniques. Continuous recording could be useful to obtain further information about the variations reported in measurements made by the indirect techniques.
Notes:
