Notizen: Abstract: The kinetic properties of type A and type B monoamine oxidase (MAO) were examined in guinea pig striatum, rat striatum, and autopsied human caudate nucleus using 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethylamine (dopamine, DA) as the substrate. MAO isozyme ratio in guinea pig striatum (28% type A/72% type B) was similar to that in human caudate nucleus (25% type A/75% type B) but different from that in rat striatum (76% type A/24% type B). Additional similarities between guinea pig striatum and human caudate nucleus were demonstrated for the affinity constants (Km) of each MAO isozyme toward DA. Endogenous concentrations of DA, 3-methoxytyramine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, and homovanillic acid were also measured in guinea pig and rat striatum following selective type A (clorgyline-treated) and type B (deprenyl-treated) MAO inhibition. In guinea pig, DA metabolism was equally but only partially affected by clorgyline or deprenyl alone. Combined treatment with clorgyline and deprenyl was required for maximal alterations in DA metabolism. By contrast, DA metabolism in rat striatum was extensively altered by clorgyline but unaffected by deprenyl alone. Finally, the deamination of DA in synaptosomes from guinea pig striatum was examined following selective MAO isozyme inhibition. Neither clorgyline nor deprenyl alone reduced synaptosomal DA deamination. However, clorgyline and deprenyl together reduced DA deamination by 94%. These results suggest that the isozyme localization and/or isozyme affinity for DA, rather than the absolute isozyme content, determines the relative importance of type A and type B MAO in synaptic DA deamination. Moreover, based on the enzyme kinetic properties of each MAO isozyme, guinea pig striatum may serve as a suitable model of human DA deamination.

Notizen: Summary. In 92 Hindu Asians, 59% of them vegetarian, and 51 Europeans longitudinal measurements were made during pregnancy of the zinc and copper concentrations in plasma and hair together with urinary zinc excretion, as indices of their zinc and copper status. Maternal diets were assessed once at booking. Zinc intakes ranged from 3·1 to 16·9 mg/day, with average intakes least in vegetarian Hindus and most in Europeans. Average copper intakes ranged between 1·48 and 1·80 mg/day and were similar in the three patient groups. Both ethnic groups showed the pregnancy-associated fall in the plasma concentration of zinc and rise in that of copper but throughout the study Hindus had statistically significant lower levels of zinc and higher levels of copper than Europeans. Urinary zinc excretion was not only significantly lower throughout the study in Hindus than in Europeans but the increase in excretion which occurred after 20 weeks gestation was smaller. There were no ethnic differences in the zinc content of hair. Urinary zinc excretion correlated with both plasma zinc levels and dietary zinc. Mean birth-weight in the Hindus was 2912 g and 34% of infants were below the 10th centile, using the Aberdeen standards, compared with 6% of the European babies (mean birthweight 3349 g). No association was found between crude or adjusted birthweight and any of the measures of zinc or copper status in either ethnic group. The Hindus had an apparently lower average zinc status than the Europeans, but there was no evidence that this had acted as a nutritional constraint and was the cause of their slower rate of intrauterine growth.

Notizen: Experimental data are presented for the diffusion of arsenic in polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) during a 15-min anneal at 900 °C. A new model is used to describe the data, which takes account of the different dopant diffusion rates in grains and in grain boundaries. The model is divided into early and late stages and, in particular, the early stage model identifies grain growth as the major mechanism by which arsenic transfers from the grains to the grain boundaries. In the late stage model, grain growth can be ignored and analytic solutions for the arsenic concentration are derived.

Notizen: Abstract. The soil of a restored opencast site in Northumberland is described and compared with the surrounding undisturbed soil. The most serious change in the soil was increased bulk density at the surface of the subsoil (0.3 m depth). Only a small overall reduction in pore space occurred, at the expense of continuous macropores. More of the pore space in the restored soil occurred as fine fissures as opposed to biotic channels, and the restored soil was weaker because of subsoiling and a loss of stability in microstructures. These changes are discussed in relation to root exploration, water movement and land management.

Notizen: Severe infection with Septoria tritici occurred in four of five experiments designed to create a series of different disease epidemics. These experiments successfully identified periods suitable for infection. They also indicated the effect of sprays, timed before and after these periods, on disease development and yield.Analysis of disease progress and weather records suggested that critical conditions for initial development of S. tritici occurred during early May at four sites. Heavy rain giving at least 10 mm on 1 day or a total of 10 mm or more on 2 or 3 successive days occurred at all four sites prior to the appearance of symptoms on a particular leaf layer, though less heavy rain may suffice to splash inoculum onto upper leaves in shorter, immature canopies where stem elongation is incomplete. At the fifth site, infection occurred later in May and disease failed to develop to a significant degree. At all sites, the length of the incubation period on any of the top three leaves was found to be between 396 and 496 degree days.Control of winter epidemics of S. tritici had little effect on yield, whereas spray sequences commencing later than growth stage (GS) 31 but immediately prior to the critical periods provided the best disease control and yield benefit. Regression models incorporating, as independent variables, area under the S. tritici disease progress curve for any of the top three leaves from their emergence (GS 32-37) satisfactorily explained yield loss at the four sites where disease was severe. Consideration of leaf 2 or leaf 3 alone accounted for more than 82% of the variance at each site and a yield loss from infection of leaf 2 related to thermal time is suggested as 0.00265% per C per day from the appearance of symptoms.
