    Notes: By combining MCXD experiments with first principles electronic structure calculations, we demonstrate that the orbital contribution to magnetism can be strongly enhanced at surfaces. This effect is illustrated for Co grown on a Cu(100) surface. The MCXD measurements were performed using the SX 700 plane grating monochromators at BESSY. The Co films were evaporated and characterized in situ, for their cleanness, thickness (1.6–50 ML), and structural order. For a film thickness up to 2.2 ML, measurements of the ac MCXD susceptibility response at a fixed photon energy allowed one to measure the critical temperature, Tc, of the films and their critical properties were characterized in situ. For several samples the MCXD response as a function of the x-ray incidence angle was investigated as well. This allows one to quantify and correct saturation effects that can occur in the measurements. Data were taken in a temperature range between 40 and 350 K, and for many samples measurements were performed at several reduced temperatures, T/Tc. The first layer of Co on the Cu(100) surface shows an enhanced orbital moment, in contrast to the subsequent layers where the orbital moment is bulklike. The lowering of the symmetry, the enhanced spin moment, and the increased value of the density of states at the Fermi level are factors that combine to give the observed enhancements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.     Notes: X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements have been performed on Ni/Pt multilayers at a temperature of 10 K. The element specificity and shell selectivity of the technique allows us to probe Ni and Pt magnetic moments and to separate them into their constituent spin (μS) and orbital (μL) magnetic moments. The Ni magnetic moment at the interface is found to be reduced. However, magnetically "dead" Ni layers are unambiguously ruled out. Induced Pt magnetic moments up to about 0.3 μB/atom are reported. The results are compared to ab initio calculations and to previous experiments performed on NiPt alloys. The role of intermixing in the reduction of the Ni magnetic moments is also discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The pseudomorphic growth of ultrathin films produces artificial structures, and with it anomalously large magnetic anisotropy energies (MAEs). Second- and fourth-order MAEs K2,K4 can be measured and analyzed. To understand the continuous (steplike) rotation of M in a spin reorientation transition (SRT), K4〈0(K4〉0) is necessary. By means of ferromagnetic resonance measurements we show that for fct Ni/Cu(001) the SRT is of second order. It is important to measure the "surface" and "volume" contribution for all MAE contributions K2,K4,... as a function of temperature. These results are compared with T=0 K first principle electronic structure calculations. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements of the critical behavior of the magnetic resonance linewidths ΔHpp from thin Ni(111) films on W(110) ranging in thickness from 15 to 40 A(ring) are presented. A huge peaklike broadening of ΔHpp is observed over a narrow temperature interval near the thickness-dependent Curie temperature TC(d). This peak results from the critical "speeding up'' of the relaxation rate Γ ∝ ΔHpp near TC due to spin fluctuations. This finding is discussed in relation to results on Gd monolayers, which show no critical broadening of the resonance linewidth. From the peak in ΔHpp, we directly determine TC(d), e.g., TC(15 A(ring))=512 K, and the shift exponent λ=1.42±0.3 for the thickness dependence of TC. Below TC, ΔHpp is analyzed in terms of the Landau–Liftshitz equation of motion, which yields ΔHpp ∝ (1 − T/TC)−β, with β the critical exponent of the spontaneous magnetization. A power law with β ranging from β=0.38 (bulk Ni) to 0.29 (15 A(ring)) is found for ≈ 10−3 ≤ (1 − T/TC) ≤ 6 × 10−2.

    Notes: Recent progress in the performance of soft x-ray monochromators has revealed new features in soft x-ray molecular photoabsorption spectra. We present here a comprehensive high resolution x-ray absorption study on the linear hydrocarbons C2H2n and C2D2n, adsorbed on Ag(100) and Cu(100) at 50 K and in the solid and the gas phase. A line shape analysis is given, for the bound as well as for the continuum resonances and the absorption thresholds, by means of models easily accessible to the experimentalist, leading to a quantitative understanding of the observed spectra, including the vibrational envelopes. Changes in intramolecular bond lengths upon core-hole excitation can be determined and tracked as a function of deuteration and chemisorption. The effects of the substrate bonding on the vibrational envelopes are analyzed.

    Notes: The use of a small, nonresonant, coil of μm dimensions as the microwave magnetic field structure of a broadband electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectrometer is described. The coil is driven by a broadband microwave generator which operates between 0.1 and 8.5 GHz. The samples may fill the coil to approximately 100%. It is shown that for small size samples this system offers higher sensitivity than a conventional cavity spectrometer. Because the system is broadband, either frequency scans or the conventional magnetic field scans can be used to traverse the resonance. Examples for DPPH and for the spin glass AgMn using this method are reported. Since the sample coil is small, it has many potential applications, such as insertion into the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator or high-pressure cell, efficient use of power in ENDOR and other double resonance experiments, and rapid recovery from transients in pulsed ESR experiments.

    Notes: We present magnetization and resistivity measurements on single crystals of yttrium doped with small concentrations of gadolinium (c=1, 2, and 3 at. %). The low-field susceptibility exhibits a spin-glass-like sharp cusp for the magnetic field along the c axis. However, there is no irreversible behavior below the temperature of the cusp, which rules out the existence of a spin-glass state. Moreover, our magnetization measurements show up a spin-flop transition for H in the basal plane. The existence of a long-range ordering is confirmed by our resistivity measurements. The resistivity parallel to the c axis exhibits a maximum just below the ordering temperature, which is reminiscent of the superzone effects observed in many rare-earth metals. The antiferro- magneticlike properties of the YGd alloys contrast with the spin-glass behavior observed in other Y–rare-earth alloys at similar concentrations.

    Notes: We report magnetic extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements on 30 monolayer Fe and Co films on Cu(001) substrates at L3,2 edges. For 3d transition metals, the magnetic EXAFS at the L edges is of great interest since it probes final d states which mainly contribute to magnetism. Magnetic EXAFS oscillations were detected up to 500 eV above the edge corresponding to 11.5 Å−1 in k space. Over such a large range, the long wavelength wiggles from the Fe and Co nearest neighbor backscattering and previously observed fast oscillations are clearly seen. It is shown that without using any deconvolution procedure a meaningful analysis can be performed despite an interference of L3 and L2 edges. In the case of Fe, experimental data are compared with multiple-scattering calculations. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The temperature and magnetic-field-dependent Kerr signal of layer-by-layer grown 300 A(ring) Gd(0001) on W(110) is analyzed below and above the Curie temperature TC. The changes in the signal shape when passing through TC are discussed. We introduce a new and independent method for accurately determining TC in thin magnetic films in ultrahigh vacuum. As a consequence, discussions of the remanence, the field induced magnetization, and the critical exponent β become more transparent.
